Come to Nature Come To Life. Walk the Earth, Heal the Spirit.

🌿✨ Exciting News! 🌿✨

Join us at Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas as we embark on our “Come to Nature, Come to Life” capacity-building initiative!

🌳🌍 Our goal is to enhance community engagement through immersive nature experiences like hiking, wildlife observation, and environmental education. With your support, we’ll expand our reach and impact, nurturing a deeper connection with our natural world.

🦋🌲 Together, we can inspire a love for nature and cultivate environmental stewardship. Stay tuned for updates on how you can get involved and make a difference! 🌟💚 #NatureLovers #EnvironmentalEducation #CommunityEngagement #OutdoorAdventure

At Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas we enhance community engagement through our “Come to Nature, Come to Live” events. Events to connect schools, classrooms, families and youth groups with nature through activities such as nature hikes, pond-dipping, bird watching, and exploration with binoculars.

However, to expand and sustain these initiatives, we need to strengthen our capacity in educational resources and outdoor equipment.

There is no doubt about it, the Community Challenge capacity-building prize of $750 would significantly support us in acquiring essential supplies like Little John rentals, bus rentals, binoculars, field guides, and educational materials.

This investment would enrich our programs, fostering deeper connections with nature and inspiring environmental stewardship among active participants.

Join us in supporting active lifestyle learning experiences in nature! Friendsareas.ca

World Environment Day Every Species Counts!

Every Species Counts: A World Environment Day Celebration at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area

Today may be a great day for ducks, and wildlife, and a time for the events to take place when the woodland trails are not flooded. So it is with heavy hearts that the World Environment Day celebration is cancelled for tonight, June 5. That being said, read on to find out how to celebrate World Environment Day!

Here is World Environment Day summit taking place Friday June 7 in the morning

World Environment Day celebration of nature, conservation, and the intrinsic value of every species! As we mark World Environment Day, let’s honor our planet and reaffirm our commitment to its protection.

Why Every Species Counts

In the vast tapestry of life, every species has a vital role to play. From the majestic trees that tower above us to the tiniest insects hidden beneath the forest floor, each organism contributes to the intricate balance of ecosystems worldwide. World Environment Day offers us the opportunity to recognize and celebrate this biodiversity, reminding us that the health of our planet depends on the wellbeing of every species. Check out the Wildlife and Biodiversity of the afforestation areas! These pamphlets and informational pdf’s can be viewed online or downloaded

A Day of Discovery

World Environment Day is one filled with exploration and enlightenment. We need our spring rains after 13 years of drought, and please come out as often as you can for the June walks through the Afforestation Area, where you can marvel at the wonders of nature and learn about local flora and fauna. For World Environment Day today, brochures and pamphlets insights into the importance of conservation efforts and the urgent need to protect endangered species. Engaging activities for all ages throughout the PartipACTION Community Challenge will inspire curiosity and foster a deeper connection to the natural world.

Climate Action in Focus

As we revel in the beauty of our surroundings, let’s also reflect on the pressing environmental challenges we face. Climate change threatens ecosystems and species around the globe, demanding urgent action and innovative solutions. Our event will spotlight nature-based solutions to climate change, showcasing the power of wetlands, forests, and trees to mitigate its impacts. Through informative materials (attached), we’ll explore how individuals, communities, businesses, and governments can contribute to a sustainable future for all.

Join the Movement

Together, we can make a difference. Let’s stand in solidarity on World Environment Day, taking action for climate change, united in our commitment to safeguarding our planet and its precious biodiversity. Whether you’re a seasoned environmental advocate or just beginning your journey, there’s a place for you in this collective effort. Join us for the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park and be part of a global movement to protect and preserve our Earth for generations to come.

World Environment Day is a reminder that every species counts, and every action we take matters. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate, learn, and take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future. Honoring the Legacy of Don Bailey: A Champion of Physical Activity and Research

In the realm of academic excellence and the pursuit of scientific knowledge, few individuals leave as profound a mark as Dr. Donald Alexander Bailey. Fondly known as Don Bailey, his legacy reverberates through decades of dedicated research, mentorship, and advocacy for physical activity and health. As we reflect on his remarkable life, we pay homage to his enduring impact on the fields of kinesiology, growth, and development.

Honoring Dr. Bailey: A Champion of Health and Fitness

Paulo Sergio Chagas Gomes mentions that for himself, his journey with Don Bailey began in 1978, amidst the vibrant atmosphere of an international sports science event in São Paulo. Little did I know that this encounter would shape the course of my academic pursuits. Don’s genuine warmth and enthusiasm were evident from the outset, as we explored the streets of Rio de Janeiro, forming a friendship that transcended geographical boundaries.

His sage advice steered me towards the University of Saskatchewan, where he extolled the virtues of studying childhood growth and development. True to his word, the College of Kinesiology welcomed me with open arms, offering a fertile ground for academic exploration under Don’s mentorship and guidance.

Moving Forward Together: Don Bailey’s Enduring Impact

Arriving in Saskatoon with my young family, we were greeted with unparalleled hospitality by Don and his wife, Donna. Their generosity and genuine care embodied the essence of Don’s character – simple, humble, yet profoundly impactful. Behind his unassuming demeanor lay a towering figure in the world of academia, revered for his expertise in physical activity and health sciences.

Don’s illustrious career spanned over three decades at the University of Saskatchewan, where he spearheaded groundbreaking research initiatives such as the Saskatchewan Longitudinal Growth and Development Study (SGDS). This landmark project shed light on the pivotal role of physical activity in children’s health, leaving an indelible mark on scientific discourse worldwide.

His contributions extended beyond the confines of academia, as Don played a pivotal role in revitalizing PARTICIPACTION, a national organization championing healthy living and fitness. His unwavering commitment to promoting physical activity resonated with a broader audience, transcending disciplinary boundaries to impact societal well-being.

From Vision to Action: Continuing Don Bailey’s Legacy

As we mourn Don’s passing on June 3, 2023, at the age of 89, we celebrate a life well-lived – marked by dedication, compassion, and unwavering integrity. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the knowledge he imparted, and the inspiration he instilled in future generations.

In Don Bailey’s memory, let us continue the pursuit of knowledge, the quest for health, and the spirit of generosity that defined his remarkable life. As we honor his legacy, may we emulate his passion for physical activity, his commitment to research, and his enduring legacy of excellence.

Did you know that Don Bailey, and George Genereux, namesake of the George Genereux Urban Regional Park, were childhood friends? Did you know that Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas honour Don Bailey’s legacy in June through the ParticipACTION Community Challenge? Stay tuned for coming details and how you can become involved! There is currently a call for volunteers.

Celebrating Dr. Don Bailey: A Legacy of Health and Inspiration

In the heart of Saskatoon, nestled among the lush greenery of the George Genereux Urban Regional Park, echoes the spirit of an extraordinary man whose influence has rippled through generations. Our organization, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, is dedicated to conserving greenspaces, including the George Genereux Urban Regional Park, inspired by Dr. George Genereux, an Olympian and close childhood friend of Don Bailey.

Dr. Don Bailey, an esteemed professor and pioneer in health promotion, left an indelible mark on the landscape of Canadian academia and public health. As we gather to honor his memory Tuesday, March 26, 2024 3 – 4pm CST we invite you to the Don Bailey Lecture Series put on by the U of S, so we can all embark on a journey to uncover the remarkable story of this visionary leader.

Born in Saskatoon during the tumultuous era of the Great Depression, Don Bailey’s upbringing was imbued with resilience and determination. After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan, he pursued further education in the United States, culminating in a Ph.D. from Indiana University. Returning to his roots in Saskatoon, Don embarked on a lifelong journey dedicated to advancing the frontiers of health sciences.

At the forefront of Don’s illustrious career were his groundbreaking research projects, each a testament to his unwavering commitment to improving public health. From the Saskatchewan Growth and Development Study to the Lifestyle Inventory Fitness Evaluation and the Bone Mineral Accrual Study, Don’s pioneering work shed light on critical aspects of human development and well-being.

Yet, it was Don’s involvement with ParticipACTION that catapulted him into the national spotlight as a champion of physical activity and healthy living. Serving on the board for over two decades, Don played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s initiatives, including the iconic media campaign highlighting the fitness levels of Swedish and Canadian men.

In the spirit of his enduring legacy, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas have revived the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, igniting a passion for active and inclusive lifestyles across Saskatoon. Through a series of events throughout June, we aim to foster community pride and engagement, embodying Don’s vision of a healthier, more vibrant society.

As we eagerly anticipate the 2024 Don Bailey Lecture Series, we are greeted by Dr. Adam Baxter-Jones as the distinguished speaker. Dr. Baxter-Jones, a renowned scholar in the field of children’s growth and maturation, embodies the spirit of innovation and excellence championed by Don Bailey.

Don Bailey was a member of the Board of Directors of ParticipACTION Canada since its establishment in 1971.

In his final days, surrounded by loved ones, Don Bailey’s legacy lives on—a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations. As we reflect on his remarkable life and contributions, let us carry forward his legacy with pride and purpose, striving to make the world a healthier and happier place for all.

In the words of Dr. Don Bailey himself, “Dem Bones” tells the tale of resilience and strength, reminding us of the importance of nurturing our bodies and minds. As we honor his memory, let us continue to build upon his legacy, ensuring that his dream of a healthier world becomes a reality.

Rest in peace, Dr. Don Bailey, knowing that your legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of those you’ve touched. The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas are honoured to submit that we are working on reviving the Saskatoon ParticipACTION Community Challenge in Saskatoon which is committed to including everyone from equity deserving groups throughout the entire population to embark in an active lifesyle. Stay tuned for more details and how you can support and become involved in the Saskatoon ParticipACTION Community Challenge happening in the month of June!
