Information Tables and Booths provide Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. with a presence at community events. We distribute a wide variety of information in the form of pamphlets, conversations, and map directions to either the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area or the George Genereux Urban Regional Park, and the upcoming Wildwoods of Saskatoon Virtual Film coming out October 24 at 7:00 pm The goal is to educate the
community about environmental education, conservation, ecological protection, and encourage the use of iNaturalist free app in the afforestation areas. The opportunities are to sign up for a few hours on a shift on Saturday October 22 between noon and 8:00 pm and/or on Sunday October 23 between noon and 8:00 pm. Thanks for considering this opportunity!

Clean UP Sat Sept 24

Thank you is extended to all the clean up volunteers all those from the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, from SOS Trees, from Saskatoon Search and Rescue, from the members of the general public who heard about the afforestation areas or who are users of the afforestation areas.

It is true what is said that many hands make light work. The clean up began at 9:30, and before the estimated end time of 1:30 the very large Loraas dumpster was filled to the top, and another one was about 3/4 full! It is hard to believe.

But it was so rewarding to know that the fencing will go up around the greenspace which no longer has trash in it, so it will be safe for park users of all ages. It will be nice to enjoy both Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, and George Genereux realizing that they are a great deal safer, now that the garbage is cleared out, and the fencing is going up to mitigate more continual trash dumping!!! Wow!

So again. Thanks to the volunteers. Thanks to Regan Olson, environmental protection officer at the City of Saskatoon. Thanks to the City of Saskatoon for helping out with the landfill fees. Where an attempt was made to clean up the park truck load by truck load to the landfill, this surely went a lot easier! Thanks to the Loraas truck driver, and we had amazing weather, couldn’t have been a nicer nor more beautiful autumn day. Everyone said they were going to return and enjoy a wonderful walk, knowing what a grand contribution was made by all! Thank you.

Forests clean our air, our water, and regulate our climate. Forests help to manage and alleviate flooding.

October 3 Results

George Genereux Urban Regional Park, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the autumn

A note from the City of Saskatoon environmental protection officer, Regan Olson in regards to the October 3 clean up.

As part of the 2020 fall community clean ups this year, we assisted in the further clean-up of both the Richard-St-Barb-Baker-Afforestation-Area and the George Genereux Urban Park on the South West boundaries of the City of Saskatoon. This took place on Saturday Oct ^3rd 2020.

Here are the results of the clean-up effort that are broken up in into the two areas that were dealt with:

Richard-St-Barb-Baker-Afforestation-Area (RSBBAA)

This clean up took place all morning here and the 32 cubic yard roll-off waste bin was emptied twice with waste

The total amount of waste removed from the Richard-St-Barb-Baker-Afforestation-Area on Saturday was 3,410kg’s

A large group of volunteers from both the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas and the Fatlanders Fat Tire Brigade were on hand with many trucks to help facilitate an efficient nearly total clean-up of this area. You would not recognize this area from how it looked only a few years ago thanks to the many stakeholders here and the ongoing work being done towards its betterment!

Other items of note:

– 5 tires were taken from here and recycled at A-1 Tire

– A large portion of an electrical line connection post that was mainly metal was hauled to the City landfill so that the metal could be recycled.

While not every piece of waste was removed from this site, the vast majority of the illegally dumped waste was cleaned up and removed from this location.

George Genereux Urban Regional Park

Further to the initial clean up that took place here a couple of weeks ago, we ran out of time to get some of the waste here. Therefore, since we were nearby at the RSBBA we simply moved the bins over here for the afternoon and worked on getting any other waste and materials that we could remove from this heavily treed area. A truck & crew from the Meewasin valley Authority assisted us and about 4 other volunteers from the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Area group helped clean up a lot of the remaining accessible waste.

We were also able to remove a truck load of metal that was taken to the landfill at the end of the day to be recycled.

This clean up took place all afternoon here and the 32 cubic yard roll-off waste bin was emptied twice with waste as well.

The total amount of waste removed from the George Genereux Urban Park on Saturday was 2,660 kg’s

The load of metal that was diverted from the landfill & will be recycled was 270 kg’s

Other items of note:

– 29 tires were taken from here and recycled at A-1 Tire

– Approximately 7 litres of used motor oil was found and properly disposed of at the landfill’s oil recovery centre

– a large quantity of used needles were collected & properly disposed

As stated in the previous report on the George Genereux Urban Park, a lot of the accessible waste was removed but a substantial amount remains. Most of this material will require equipment to remove and the resources of other City Departments & Stakeholders. When the time comes, please reach out to us on this matter as we can help assist in the facilitation.

Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park on October 3

Alongside the thank you extended by Regan Olson from the City of Saskatoon, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. (FSAA) wish to thank everyone who came out on October 3 for the cleanup. It was in 2016 when the Fatlanders Fat Tire Brigade (FFTB) worked alongside and as part of the Stewards and Stakeholders of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. With the new incorporation of the FSAA under the new name, there is no longer a group called the Stewards and Stakeholders of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area it was good to work with the FFTB who have also since incorporated. The afforestation areas are amazing greenspaces within the City of Saskatoon to be protected, and enjoyed.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup celebrated International Shore Cleaning Month and hosted a Cleanup Across Canada. In the GCSC #ShorelineSpotlights, the Sept 19 clean up in Saskatoon at George Genereux Urban Regional Park was featured as follows.

“The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc lead a fruitful cleanup of George Genereux Urban Regional Park on Saturday, September 19th.

Their cleanup, in celebration of National Tree Day, and International Coastal Cleanup month, removed more than 204,367 pounds from the forest. Volunteers even collected 39 tires for recycling! “

George Genereux Urban Regional Park is situated on the shoreline of the Yorath Island Spillway, a great pleistocene river with a large delta which emptied floodwaters and sediment into the South Saskatchewan. Any pollution in George Genereux Urban Regional Park is carried via the West Swale directly into our South Saskatchewan River where it affects our drinking water.

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out and wore masks, and socially distanced when around others not in their COVID bubble George Genereux Urban Regional Park is 148.9 acres, and it is easy to socially distance. By the numbers

The September 19 clean up which saw over 9,270Kg or 9.27 tons or 10.2 US tons or 204,367 pounds removed from the forest! What was an indication of what the volunteers saw in this 148.9 acre forest?

As you can imagine, a huge wave of gratitude goes out to everyone who showed up on Sat. Sept. 19, and cared for the trees, the environment and created a safe urban regional park! There are a number of parents, dog walkers, bird banders, foresters, photographers and citizen scientists using iNaturalist who go out regularly to enjoy George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

Keeping Track of Litter

Thank you for the interest shown in the George Genereux Urban Regional Park Cleanup scheduled for Saturday September 19. As an outdoor event, on a large property 1/2 mile x 1/2 mile (147.9 acres) it is easy to social distance, and we are giving away free fabric re-usable facemasks for those instance where we cannot social distance. We take the well-being of our volunteers seriously! We are providing cloth facemasks, disposable face masks, plastic gloves, hand sanitizer, taking forehead temperatures, supplying individually packaged refreshment and are encouraging outdoor social distancing in this huge forest.

We are going to be tracking and recording the litter by using Data Card or Online Data Tracking Feature.

We have found out through the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup that keeping track of the litter found is a critical aspect of the Shoreline Cleanup.

Why? By tracking litter items it helps determine their origins, leading to solutions to reduce those garbage items that ends up on our shorelines and polluting the South Saskatchewan River via the West Swale (a low lying area a part of the Yorath Island Spillway a glacial river connecting the North Saskatchewan to the South Saskatchewan). The record keeping and solutions also helps reinforce the impact you are having for cleaner shorelines. There
are three great ways to gather your litter data:

Pick up a Data Card from the George Genereux Urban Regional Park Registration Table.
ONLINE APP Use the Online Data Tracking Feature! Want to record your litter findings on a mobile device? Register with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup for this event. They will email you your individual links to the online data tracking feature! Wow! It is that easy to record your data digitally. Then just login to your Shoreline Cleanup account on mobile and open this link, tap in to start tallying up the litter items you find. Only those registered on the website for the clean up will receive access to this link.

3. ONLINE APP Jake Rubenstein, Manager of the Great Global Cleanup says “And while you’re picking up litter, check out our Earth Challenge 2020 app to record the composition and amount of trash that you collected. Every data submission, including yours, will help researchers track global litter trends as part of the biggest citizen science project in the world. “

Donate $90 to assist in the installation of interpretive signs and the creation of an afforestation area outdoor classroom for children across the City of Saskatoon.

Donate $75 to ensure 125m of wildlife friendly fence can be installed. This allows the deer fawns and moose calves to pass through without getting caught in the fence, or without being left behind.

Your reach out for The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. when you donate, or contact Donate A Care Canada goes towards the installation of a garbage receptacle to protect the semi- wilderness habitat without pollution in the environment. This installation will protect the natural areas at this amazing habitat.

Donate $50 in protection of habitat for bees and other pollinators which help keep our planet and our city green. They are facing habitat loss, and what a better place than the afforestation areas to protect their habitat where herbicides and pesticides are not in use.

Your donation also helps provide the means for classrooms of children, or youth groups to come out to the afforestation areas by bus for inquiry-learning on-site in these naturalized afforestation areas.

A Tree-mendous Result!

The challenges looming on the horizon appear to be both awesome and formidable. …But, hey! What do we have to loose?

The changes taking place in Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the consequent erection of barriers to forestall illegal dumping and mitigate such trespass is beginning at the Urban Regional Park. Along with this spirit of defending the urban regional park, with physical, concrete Jersey Barriers, education is a vital link.

How will Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area find its place in Saskatoon? At the centre of the transition are great questions. How to appease a variety of contemporary stakeholders, how to honour City of Saskatoon wetlands policy and open space bylaws, and how to coalesce with the intent of the history and the city visionaries of 1960 who bought this piece of land as a “green belt” for Saskatoon, and the parks department personnel who went before city council to preserve the afforestation area in perpetuity in 1972. At the heart of the debate is succinctly this: “How will Saskatoon answer these great challenges?”

In the age of climate change and nature-deficit disorder, such experiences underscore this truth: Our relationship with nature is not only about preserving land and water, but also about preserving and growing the bonds between us. ” ~ ^{Louv. 2011. p. 139.}

This is definitely an area where Saskatoon could shine. As Maude Barlow states, ” The most important step is to be clear about the nature of the problem.”^{Barlow. 2005. p.271} This is an opportunity for Saskatoon to take a stand. How the civic government of Saskatoon and the parks department answer these great questions of this Afforestation Area in this time, depends on whose counsel it seeks.

If anything is going to limit the supposedly infinite possibilities of economic globalization, it will be the earth itself. Humanity has destroyed more forests, wetlands, and wild spaces in the last hundred years than in all of history. The highly regarded journal <Science reports that recent extinction rates are one hundred to one thousand times higher than before humans existed. Moreover, it says, with the exponential extinction rate now being experienced, that number could increase to between one thousand and ten thousand times by the end of the century….what is clearly needed is “Plan Rejuvenation”^{Barlow. 2015. p 279. 283.}

The afforestation area and the West Swale wetlands, indeed has some serious problems that need to be addressed. The community and several stakeholders will take note of what the City of Saskatoon decides. “Opportunities to find the natural world are all around us, even in the densest cities. But, unless we act quickly to conserve and restore these places, and create new ones, then nearby nature will become a quaint artifact of another time.”^{Louv. 2011. p. 199} “But the task is not as straightforward as might first appear.” ^{Barlow. Clarke. 2001. p. 168} “The challenges looming on the horizon appear to be both awesome and formidable.” ^{Barlow. Clarke. 2001. p.225}

A Tree-mendous achievement to placing barriers to mitigate trash dumping and illegal trespass has made taken a step forward. The project cannot begin by barricading the trash in. Or, if a farmer erects a fence to keep the fox out of the chicken yard, erects the fence, and turns around and sees the fox in the chicken yard, the fence defeats its purpose. So, as a good example going forward, a group of environmentally conscious volunteers from a diverse array of stakeholder backgrounds came together on Saturday, October 29, 2016, for a mini-clean up. This mini clean up lasted two hours; entailed three pick up trucks, a trailer, and eight volunteers. resulting in the removal of approximately 1,500 kilograms (3,300 pounds) of trash that was missed in the previous clean ups of June 2015 and July 2016. To echo the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning; Deep thanks to all. How that great work of Love enhances Nature and thus shines Nature’s lamp in each.

What was Richard St. Barbe Baker’s mission, that he imparted to the Watu Wa Miti, the very first forest scouts or forest guides? To protect the native forest, plant ten native trees each year, and take care of trees everywhere.
