notes: On this tour we can socially distance in this 326 acre mixed woods forest or wear masks for any COVID protocols. We can supply masks/water bottles for participants. Please wear pants, socks and suitable walking shoes for walking in a forest, and clothing suitable for the weather.

National Forest Week brings attention to our forests and trees from coast to coast across Canada. Our forests and trees provide habitats for wildlife, insects, polllinator species, birds and so much more! What is the ‘triple environmental emergency we are facing?

1. Loss of biodiversity
2. Climate change
3. Out of control pollution.

Our native biodiversity needs wild spaces, food and homes such as trees and forests provide in which to thrive. Forests, tree planting, and forest conservation initiatives are nature-based solutions towards climate action. Pollution, pesticides, herbicides are escalating the extinction events. Creating safe, organic forest spaces is a large step to halt and slow down the silent sixth mass extinction event of invertebrates, the planet’s bird food on wings. Ornithologists and botanists have noticed that the songbird, and raptor populations have declined by a staggering 48%. The monitored wildlife populations are reduced by a catastrophic 68%. A loss of forests and habitats have caused over 2/3 of our animal populations to totally disappear.

Richard St. Barbe Baker said it this way, “If a person loses one third of his or her skin, the person will die; if a tree loses a third of its bark, the tree will die, and if the world loses a third of its trees, the world will die.
We live less that five minutes without air and the trees give us air we breathe. We live less than five days without water, and trees are absolutely essential in the water cycle. We live less than five weeks without food, and without the trees we could not grow food.” (Filson, Bruce K. October 7, 1982, Western People, p. 5)

The Secrets To Finding World Class Parks for Richard St. Barbe Baker Quickly

“It took a long time to find a suitable site for such an important memorial, but eventually, a seven acre site was found right in the heart of England, in part of the famous Charnwood Forest.” It was here that the Richard St. Barbe Baker received its dedication ceremony in 1985, the International Year of the Forest. Well over a hundred people came for the ceremony and the official opening. His Royal Highness, the Patron of the International Tree Foundation [ITF], the Prince of Wales paid the tributes in the official opening. Greetings were brought from co-founder Senior Chief Josiah Njonjo, and ITF branches worldwide sent greetings. HRH unveiled a magnificent plaque, and planted a fine Canadian Oak, in respect of Richard St. Barbe Baker’s Canadian connections. 1.

This was a celebration which Richard St. Barbe Baker would have surely approved of, “for he said to a lady once who wanted to plant a tree in his honour, “Madam, don’t plant a tree, plant a wood.” Well, in England they have! 1.

And, that’s not all, here in Saskatoon we have honoured the Loving Father of Trees, Baba Wya Miti with a 326 acre afforestation area in the city of Saskatoon! Following their meeting of October 19, 1978 the , the Parks and Recreation Board resolved to put forward the recommendation for the naming of this afforestation area as the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (urban regional park). On October 30th, 1978, City Council received the proposal, and on January 4, 1979, Council approved the naming of this Urban Regional Park, which was part of the first 660 acres set out as “forest in perpetuity” by A.L. Ligtermoet, Assistant Parks Superintendent in 1972.

What an honour and tribute for Richard St. Barbe Baker, the Loving Father of Trees. Along with the recommendation, the Parks and Recreation Board submitted a number of notable biographies and commemorations bestowed upon Richard St. Barbe Baker worldwide.

There is a forest in Saskatoon. It is a secret forest which no one had ever heard about. This forest is named after Richard St. Barbe Baker because he planted trees, and here in this park hundreds upon thousands of trees were planted. It was a perfect match. Forest visitors hearing the story of Richard St. Barbe Baker fall in love with the Saskatoon forest and want to protect it. They want to make the forest as special and magnificent as this great man was special and magnificent.

The Legacy of Saskatoon’s Secret Forest Saturday November 6, 2021 at 1:00 pm CST (UTC-6) A free community service event. Many people have heard of David Suzuki, David Attenborough, British Ecologist Thomas Crowther, or Greta Thunberg. Richard St. Barbe Baker was the first global conservationist and humanitarian. This is our way to remember his international legacy.

The shelter roof was coming down and actually a log had rolled off of it the day before the restoration event occurred, so *whew* it was a lucky coincidence that this event took place as there are classrooms of children and families also with children using the forest at the moment who may be curious about structures such as these. Sorry we did not take a picture of the sagging roof before the event started. At the end of the event these were the volunteers remaining (There were those who left early before the photos were taken.)

A huge thank you goes out to the volunteers who came out to help with making the forest safer for users of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. Also another thank you goes out to these volunteers who assisted to make the forest safer for the elm trees growing near this structure. With the Elms facing two natural threats -Dutch Elm Disease and the Elm ZigZag Sawfly both devastating for Elm trees- it is dangerous for people to also be a threat to the elms of the afforestation area. There are indeed wrong seasons, and methods for pruning, or taking down elm trees lest Dutch Elm Disease enter into the Forest.

The volunteers who came out for this restoration event on Arbor Week, did indeed become forest guardians as advocated by Richard St. Barbe Baker to take care of trees everywhere! These citizens also took an active role on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal SDG 15 Life On Land and helped to stop the degradation of forests.

The restoration work did involve the taking down of a lean-to tied to existing trees in the middle of a forest area with endangered species at risk in the forest. This restoration will also encourage forest users to stay on trails, enhancing forest guardianship of the woodlands.

1/ Cutting down trees in an area high with Elm invites Dutch Elm Disease if the tree cutter(s) is not properly trained on tree removal (and it is an afforestation area preserved in perpetuity)

2/ Shelters invite homeless people who live off the grid who are not a good mix for the current influx of family and school groups utilizing the afforestation areas as legitimate users.

3/ Shelters are suggestive that people should camp over night, or possibly have a fire detrimental to legitimate users and stewards of the forest, classrooms, and children of families, the neighbouring residents and the CNR Chappell yards oil and gas trains

5/ The Shelter is not built to code, and could be a safety hazard for families or classrooms of youngsters frequenting the trails on the east side of RSBBAA

6/ People are encouraged to go off the FFTB trails to build, enlarge, explore the shelter, and squish the species at risk on the east side of RSBBAA

7/ People who do not identify tree species well, could not only utilize the elm in their shelter construction, but also the tree species at risk in the east side of RSBBAA

8/ The shelter is not made with dead fall. The shelter is encouraging the wanton felling of trees without permissions from the City of Saskaton [CoS] and without abiding by the CoS Tree policy. Felling of trees without proper arboreal certificates of training is also a very dangerous activity as the east side of RSBBAA is becoming more populated with trail users.

9/ Making the east side of RSBBAA safer is a good thing, and also encourages safe trail use just in time for International Trails Day on June 5

10/ Taking care of trees during Saskatoon’s First ever Arbor Week shows citizen commitment to forest and tree health. It is not enough to plant trees, Richard St. Barbe Baker advocated that trees need to be protected also.

11/ People illegally felling CoS trees in an afforestation preserved in perpetuity threatens the trails, the users, and the forest integrity as a safe greenspace.

12/ Restore the afforestation area just in time for World Environment Day on June 5.

Forest Restoration

March 21 is a spectacular day! It is the United Nations International Day of Forests! This is a day to take especial notice of the semi-wilderness bio-diversity in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the George Genreux Urban Regional Park.

During these days of COVID with isolation, loneliness, anxiety, depression, and having COVID affecting our family, work and lives to such a great extent, it is wonderful to have a natural prescription for healing and have a walk in the forest. This is a very healing, peaceful, and restorative process to connect with nature in these weird times.

Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area is 326 acres, and George Genereux Urban Regional Park is 148 acres, so plenty of room for social distancing, to derive some fantastic health benefits.

There is great importance in forests. Richard St. Barbe Baker, himself had a tree pledge for forest guardians: to plant ten trees a year, take care of trees everywhere, and do one good deed every day. The theme of International Day of Forests this year is “‘Forest Restoration: a path to recovery and well-being.” This ties into United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration very well indeed!

So let us all take up Richard St. Barbe Baker’s forest guardian pledge starting on the International Day of Forests. Let us all plant ten trees a year, take care of trees everywhere, and do one good deed every day. What a great thought during these weird COVID times for sure.\

Fresh snow! Going out in the winter time when there is freshly fallen snow on the ground is an amazing experience. A heavy snowfall covers everthing in a thick blanket of white. In the kingdoms of Scotland and England, this may be called an “onding.” As compared to a light snow, which may be referred to as a “skift” of snow.

Now then, if you happen to come out to the afforestation areas first thing after a blizzard when the ground is covered in a delightful onding of snow, then keep your eyes peeled. The marvels of prints in the snow are a true source of wonder.

Just imagine the difference $5,000 can make! $5,000 could help provide environmental protection in the form of park identification signs and also install motorized vehicle barriers so that people cannot come in and dump trash all over the park space and all over the trails willy nilly. The afforestation areas are amazing places to decompress and partake in wonderful social distancing while getting out in nature. Environmental protections also care for species at risk and the semi-wilderness corridor and so much more.

Though trash cleanups are wonderful and amazing, and it is great to see the forest restored year after year, it would be so nice not to cleanup after buniuks who dump trash in an urban regional park with park protections installed!. Parks are amazing places to get out to enjoy nature during this pandemic, and they are also great places to connect with the semi-wilderness area and provincial birding hot spot. This year’s clean up statistics amounted to 15.34 tonnes removed. That is a lot. Can you help protect this greenspace, the trails, the wildlife please?

A parking lot means that illegal trespass by motorized vehicles stops. When motorized vehicles enter the greenspace, for some reason they think a beautiful park, forest and wetlands is a place for shingles, oil, hazardous wast etc Illegal dumping needs to stop especially as the wetlands drain directly into the South Saskatchewan River, and our driking water. Illegal dumping and illegal trespass also damages the habitat of endangered species.
