Richard St. Barbe Baker Global Conservationist and Humanitarian

International Online Premiere Saturday, November 6, 2021

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas have commissioned a documentary about this remarkable man with historical footage, arguably the first global conservationist, and his legacy here in our city. It is based on interviews with several people who knew St Barbe Baker.

The program, will also have greetings from conservationists from Australia, Switzerland, Scotland, Britain and the USA who were inspired by St Barbe and who became conservation leaders in their own right.

The program begins with greetings from civic officials and concludes with a live panel. The total program will be about 1 hour.

I never heard him speak ill of anyone; on the contrary the world seemed to be peopled with his personal friends.”2.

“Just imagine for a moment what it would be like if you really knew that everything you do counts – which, ironically, on a cosmic level, is probably true. If you knew that to be a fact, in a very concrete, immediate way, would you live your life differently? Just today, for example, how might you have related your children and loved ones if you knew that everything you say and do does affect them deeply and indelibly?”3.

Well, that has indeed happened in the case of Richard St. Barbe Baker. Time after time, the people who have met or encountered Richard St. Barbe Baker were affected emotionally, and profoundly. To this very day, they remember the moment when Richard St. Barbe Baker came into their lives.

So, it is always good to stop, take stock, and wonder, “What would Richard St. Barbe Baker say?”

And here is how to sum it all up in Richard St. Barbe Baker’s words on connections to the earth. “The fate of an individual or a nation will always be determined by the degree of his or its harmony with the forces and laws of nature and the universe. Man is not alone in the universe but is surrounded by sources of power, harmony and knowledge…Our individual evolution is a job that has to be carried out day by day by each individual himself. It is a life-long task.”

There are Friends of the Trees, who knew and encountered Richard St. Barbe Baker, around the world folks have come together on the same stage, they are ecologists and conservationists, authors and climate change consultants. What do they have to say about Richard St. Barbe Baker, and the encounter he had on their lives? Many people have heard of David Suzuki, David Attenborough, or Greta Thunberg. The Secret of Richard St. Barbe Baker

Many people have heard of David Suzuki, David Attenborough, or Greta Thunberg. Richard St. Barbe Baker was the first global conservationist and humanitarian. What was the secret of Richard St. Barbe Baker?

Well, he formed the Men of the Trees from the very first Dance of the Trees July 22, 1922, and not this organisation is known as the International Tree Foundation. This part is known, and not a secret.

We know that he encouraged all who joined the International Tree Foundation – who were called [from the Kikuyu of Africa] the Watu Wa Miti or forest guides to make a promise. The forest scouts, all took a solemn oath to “promise to plant ten trees a year, take care of trees everywhere, and do one good deed every day!“

We know that he knew Wangaari Mathai, nobel prize laureate, and that they spoke often about the Sahara Desert reclamation. Baker took a trip in the Sahara desert, and realized that it once was a lush verdant forest. So just as in the final scene of the Planet of the Apes, it was ARRRGGGHHH! what has happened to the earth? The difference is the Planet of the Apes was a futuristic movie scenario and the Sahara Desert is a testament of the past and present.

Tree planting, nay, not just tree planting but forest planting was an imperative message from Richard St. Barbe Baker as he travelled the globe. This is not a secret, and an amazing feat of accomplishing the planting of billions and trillions of trees worldwide.

What many people don’t realize that his mission, his imperative, his modus operandi was that everyone should develop a “tree sense.” This “tree sense” is what shouldn’t be Richard St. Barbe Baker’s secret. Just as he travelled the world speaking and writing books about developing a “tree sense” so should we all today, in this era.

So, to honour the Legacy of Richard St. Barbe Baker, can you today, foster your own “tree sense?”

As part of the City of Saskatoon’s very first Arbor Week, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc hosted the Extraordinary legacy tour of Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area with Robert White as guest speaker.

His presentation was a heartfelt speech of his memories and time getting to know Richard St. Barbe Baker. It was poignant, touching, and truly gave meaning to the legacy of Richard St. Barbe Baker, founder of the International Tree Foundation.

I approach God’s Creation, this beautiful Earth. The ancients believed that the Earth was a sentient being and felt the behavior of mankind upon it. As we have no proof to the contrary, it might be as well for responsible people to accept this point of view and behave accordingly.

Saskatoon’s Man of the Trees Saturday May 4, 2019 a Part of Jane’s walks

SATURDAY MAY 4, 2019 at 2:00 pm: Richard St. Barbe Baker, known around the world as The Man of the Trees, has been called “The First Global Conservationist.”

Address: We’ll start at the site of Richard St. Barbe Baker’s last tree planting at the Diefenbaker Centre and, for those who want to, we will walk to Woodlawn Cemetery, where he is buried. Stories of Baker will be told along the way. Assemble in the parking lot furthest north of the Diefenbaker Centre (101 Diefenbaker Place) closest to the river, where you will see a picnic table and fire pit. The walk will start there.

SUNDAY MAY 5th, 2019 at 2:00 PM: The Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area in the Southwest corner of the city is one of Saskatoon’s best kept secrets. The afforestation area is named after one of the world’s renowned conservationists, otherwise known as “The Man of Trees”. The afforestation area is 40+ year old planted forest that has seen its share of good times and bad. Come out and take a walk along the beautiful wooded trails and learn more about the recent efforts to protect the area to give the space an identity through ongoing shared use initiatives like the St Barbe Winter Recreational Fat Bike Trail network and South West Off Leash Recreational Area. If you would like to learn more about the Richard St Barbe Baker then be sure to join Paul Hanley’s Saskatoon Man of the Trees Walk the day before [Saturday May 4th at 2pm].

SUNDAY MAY 5, 2019 3:30 PM: George Genereux Urban Regional Park “Afforestation Area” Wild Spring Walk.

Leave the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and come on over to its neighbour; George Genereux Urban Regional Park – just turn right (west) out of the SW OLRA and (turn right at the dead end near the railway tracks) proceed along Cedar Villa Road all the way to Sk Hwy 7 where you will turn right. On the Sk Hwy 7 proceed north towards the city, go up and over the CN overpass and take the first left onto the grid road, and follow that grid road south to the western side of the CN overpass, and Voila! you will be at George Genereux Urban Regional Park. If you are leaving from the city and driving west on 22nd Street, then use these directions to drive to “George Genereux” Urban Regional Park

Come discover the flora and fauna in this semi-wilderness afforestation area named George Genereux Urban Regional Park. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of this quarter section of trees planted in 1972 as a tree nursery, and named in honour of George Genereux in 1979.

“The aim of the Men of the Trees is briefly ‘ to develop a tree sense in every citizen, and to encourage all to plant, protect and love their native trees; for forestry is among the oldest and most honourable of the peaceful arts of men, and in its practice is unselfish and constructive service.’ ”

A puzzle was posed on Carve your legacy, Evokes curiosity. The Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area has as its namesake, Dr. Richard Edward St. Barbe Baker, O.B.E., Hon. LL.D. (Sask), F.I.A.L., For.Dip.Cantab., A.C.F.

Carve your legacy, Evokes curiosity resolved many of the honourifics, and postnomial letters. However what did F.I.A.L., and For.Dip.Cantab. mean? That was the curiouser, and curioser poser.

At first glance, and knowing the history of Richard Edward St. Barbe Baker, the founder of the International organization “Men of the Trees” now known as the “International Tree Foundation” it first appeared that it may have something to do with forestry, an honour or a group. However….

A letter arrived from Dawn at the Saskatoon Public Library “Ask Us” reference service resolving the conundrum.

By searching in the 1974 edition of the “Who’s Who” directory, a listing was posted for Baker, Richard St. Barb, FIAL. The abbreviations cited for the “Who’s Who” directory gave the definition that FIAL stands for “Fellow of the International Institute of Arts and Letters.”

Now then, according to The Trustees of the San Luigi Charitable Trust, “The Institute of Arts and Letters, London, is a small and exclusive learned society, based in England’s capital but with an international membership, devoted to the study of the arts and letters in their broadest sense, and to the promotion of humanitarian and philanthropic endeavour.”

Fellows of the Institute are limited to a 50-member honour society, who remain elected for life, and may attach the postnomial letters F.I.A.L. An existing fellow, puts forward an exemplary candidate, and this nomination goes before the society in a peer review.

If one was to speak of an agile mind, the concept of having a quick resourceful and adaptable character would come to the forefront.

Further to this the staff at the Saskatoon Public Library discovered that in regards to the abbreviations ~ “For. Dip. Cantab.” that the abbreviation Cantab. stands for Cambridge University. And then the “Who’s Who” Almanac, again confirmed this abbreviation with the definition “Forestry Diploma, Cantab., 1920”.

There has been historically the Alumni Cantabrigienses: A Biographical List of All Known Students, Graduates and Holders of Office at the University of Cambridge, from the Earliest Times to 1900 is a biographical register of former members of the University of Cambridge which was edited by John Venn (1834–1923) and his son John Archibald Venn (1883–1958) and published by Cambridge University Press in ten volumes between 1922 and 1953. However, it ends at 1900, and Richard St. Barbe Baker graduated 1920.

According to Ruth Wright Millar, author of Saskatchewan Heroes, and Rogues, Richard St. Barbe Baker enrolled in forestry programmes at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University, graduating in 1920. St Barbe set off with these papers in hand, as the Colonial Office assigned to St. Barbe a posting in Kenya as Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF).

The puzzle is solved with a bit of “study and a quick and agile response!

The Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area has as its namesake, Dr. Lt. Richard Edward St. Barbe Baker, O.B.E., Hon. LL.D. (Sask), F.I.A.L., For.Dip.Cantab., ACF

National Archives [Kew] does state that “senior” or first lieutenant [Lt] Richard Edward St. Barbe Baker, serving in the Royal Horse and Field Artillery did receive the Military Cross [M.C.] for service in World War I, and that St. Barbe also served as “junior” or second lieutenant [2LT].

Following service in the war, Colonial Office appointed Baker Assistant Conservator of Forests in 1920 with a post in Kenya. This was followed with a posting as Assistant Conservator of Forests [ACF] in Nigeria.

In 1971, the University of Saskatchewan bestowed upon Richard St. Barbe Baker, LL.D. an honorary Doctorate of Laws.

Richard St. Barbe Baker, O.B.E. also received the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth in 1977.
