Breaking News! City Nature Challenge 2023 is just around the corner, and Friends Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc encourages you to join in the fun! From April 28 to May 1, you can participate in a worldwide competition to collect the most plant and wildlife observations in your city. The CNC YXE 2023 is a fantastic opportunity for you to explore nature, take pictures, and share your findings with the world.

Spring is back, and it’s the happiest time of the year when everything comes back to life. The City Nature Challenge provides a perfect opportunity for you to connect with nature, explore the outdoors, and discover new species. You don’t need any special skills or equipment to participate – just your smartphone and the iNaturalist app.

To take part in the challenge, all you need to do is find any plant, animal, or any evidence of life in your city, take a picture, and share your observations through the iNaturalist app. It’s that easy! Your participation will help scientists understand more about the biodiversity of your city and how to coexist with nature.

The City Nature Challenge is an international citizen science initiative that highlights the value of citizen science data in answering questions in urban ecology. By participating in the CNC YXE 2023, you’ll be joining a worldwide community of nature lovers and making a significant contribution to scientific research. The data you collect will be used to understand how urban biodiversity responds to urban intensification and how cities can be made more sustainable.

Cities around the world have already hosted a variety of Public Engagement with Biological Recording PEBR events as part of the City Nature Challenge, including BioBlitzes, mini-BioBlitzes, species surveys, guided nature walks, ID parties, and various derivations of these. These events all have the common aims of collecting biodiversity data while connecting the public with nature. By taking part in the CNC YXE 2023, you’ll be contributing to this global effort to understand and protect our natural world.

Whether you are an expert, a seasoned #BioBlitz participant or getting involved for the first time, it couldn’t be easier to join in. It is as simple as 1-2-3!

1. Download the iNaturalist app and sign in.

2. Find wildlife. It can be any wild plant, insects, mushrooms, animal, fungi, or any other evidence of life (shells, scat, fur, tracks, feathers, nests) found in your neighborhood, home, backyard, or even through your windows. You might be surprised by how many insects thrive in the nooks and crannies around you.

3. Upload the the networking community on iNaturalist. You don’t even have to know anything about the species you are observing. Teams of experts will be reviewing and updating the information that’s submitted, so you can log back in later and learn more about what you’ve spotted.

If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.

Started in 2016 for the first-ever Citizen Science Day, the citizen science teams at Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences dreamed up the City Nature Challenge as a fun way to capitalize on their home cities’ friendly rivalry and hold a citizen science event around urban biodiversity. The first City Nature Challenge was an eight-day competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, engaging residents and visitors in documenting nature to better understand urban biodiversity. Over 20,000 observations were made by more than 1000 people in a one-week period, cataloging approximately 1600 species in each location, including new records for both areas. During the 2016 CNC, the organizers heard so much excitement and interest from people in other cities that they decided that they couldn’t keep to the fun just to themselves. In 2017 the City Nature Challenge went national, and in 2018, the CNC became an international event!

Saskatoon is now registered for the very first time ever to participate in the 2022 event – so we really need your help to highlight the City of Saskatoon area!

Bottle Drive in the Newspaper

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. Virtual Bottle Drive is in the July 21, 2020 edition of the Leader Post. Thank you kindly to reporter Alec Salloum for sharing the work that our non profit charity is doing to conserve this urban regional park! Thank you kindly to those who have called and taken part in this virtual bottle drive! Greatly appreciated.

SARCAN seeing surge in returns since reopening in mid-June

A BOTTLE DRIVE done safely!!! During the Coronavirus COVID-19, we cannot go door to door asking for bottles, but we can post our virtual bottle drive, and arrange a safe pick up.

If you should wish to support a forest and wetlands in the city, we are a non-profit charity raising money to protect these wonderful afforestation areas!

Please phone us for a recycling bottle drive pick up! We will come, and store the bottles in a garage until SARCAN re-opens. So, if you have too many bottles laying around- and they are just in the way, then do some community good, protect some endangered species, work towards saving a forest, wetlands and grasslands in Saskatoon and DONATE YOUR BOTTLES TO A BOTTLE DRIVE!

Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (Urban Regional Park) and George Genereux Urban Regional Park both had their beginning in 1972 with their commitment to the Green Survival Program

“Trees are the lungs of the modern city. The more industrialize the city, the more trees it requires to purify the air.” (Liddell, 1971) “the resurgence of academic interest in resource management and environmental planning that has occurred over the past 10 years This resurgence has occurred in parallel with the growth of wide public concern over possible future resource shortages, pollution, the loss of valued wildlife species and landscapes and, more generally, over the possibility and desirability of sustaining current economic development patterns and associated life styles. …There is a widespread appreciation of the environment and the threats it faces… concerns range from global issues to do with the future of industrial society, the extinction of species and even human survival, down to local issues such as preserving neighbourhood amenities” (Goyder, 1983)

“The nursery industry continued to evolve across the country in the 1970s. With environmental concerns growing in this period, the Association for American Nurserymen launched their “Green Survival” program. This initiative stressed plants’ role in buffering noise pollution, trapping air pollutants, cooling the earth, etc. “(National Register of Historic Places Registration, 2014)

The Green Survival Campaign spread across North America. “A ‘Survival’ Message Green Survival has a message. It is simply that “each individual can have a positive, meaningful effect on the quality of life by planting trees and other living plants.” The appeal of this simple message has spread across the nation, and beyond, to Canada, England, Holland and Germany. (‘Green Survival ‘Time, 1977)

Afforestation such as the tree planting undertaken by the City of Saskatoon Park’s department to create the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park is the establishment of a forest or stand of trees (forestation) in an area where there was no previous tree cover.

Green Survival” is the nursery industry’s own program for improving the environment, more beauty to see, and conservation of land from erosion with plantings of trees and shrub. ‘We have a great obligation here…We also have a great contribution to make’” said the AAN President Harold R. “The narrowing [and reduction of] roads, which calms traffic and lowers the UHI [urban heat island] effect, allows for more (all-important) tree planting. Preserving green space, gardens and farm land creates a green belt around the city, and planting trees absorbs CO2. …In all urban planning, we need to maintain and protect the existing ecosystem that stores carbon and plan for the creation of new carbon storage sinks by increasing the amount of tree planting. The increase is the percentage of green space as a share of total city land is to be performed in combination with an densification activities.” ~Steffen Lehmann

Planting in reserved lands purchased in 1960 for a green belt or tree belt begins in 1972. “A tree belt as a windbreak and to create a sense of enclosure is suggested along the edges of development for all areas which will not expand in the near future. Such a belt can already be considered along the northern boundary of Westview Heights. In conclusion it can be stated that a seemingly overwhelming demand lies ahead, however, through careful timing, programming and design there should be few difficulties. It should be remembered that the city forefathers reserved beautiful parks along the river, others have developed in Kiwanis Park, the University Grounds and numerous treed and landscaped streets. They did so under adverse conditions with a population of 20,000. They gave the city a reputation as the “City Beautiful” and today’s residents should be willing to uphold their tradition.” (Wellman. 1963. P 18)_At this time City Council passes an order in council that the afforestation is protected in perpetuity.

As we look out on the southern extent of circle drive, along the shorelines of the Gordie Howe Bridge, and out onto Township Road 362A the view of Bert Wellman, Saskatoon Planning Department, can be seen Wellman walked around Saskatoon’s perimeter choosing high spots of land for scenic beauty and brought his ideas to City Planner Bill Graham developing the 1960 Circle Drive Parkway, planting the parks, and establishing the trees.

Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park were afforested by the City Parks Department in 1972; 200,000 trees on 600 acres of land in three afforestation areas. Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park were on the southwest side of the South Saskatchewan River, and the third was on the east side of the river, south of Diefenbaker park, and west of the Saskatoon Golf Course. The afforestation areas were all preserved in perpetuity in 1972.

When you think about Jardin du Luxembourg (Luxembourg Garden) in Paris, France, it is amazing to find a 60 acre park in the city. Benfield stated that he “Still feels ‘in the city’ when there [in the park], but in an especially tranquil part. ”

George Genereux Afforestation Area and Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area are appealing for that same reason. One is surrounded by an array of landscapes, ecosystems and experiences, and it is amazing that the city long range planners have included these two afforestation areas in the Blairmore Sector Plan as Saskatoon grows to 1/2 million.

By integrating the two afforestation areas into the new growth as Saskatoon and surrounding areas expand around George Genereux Afforestation Area and Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area is magical. “Green infrastructure … [has] the effect of softening urban density, making it more appealing as well as better functioning.” ~ Benfield.

Trees provide semi-wilderness wildlife habitats. The very nature of the afforestation area helps wildlife and ecosystems to thrive and flourish. The mix of native and exotic trees provide animal homes and sanctuaries as well as food sources.

The afforestation areas play a huge role in mitigating the greenhouse effect. Forests are carbon sinks, as they absorb Carbon Dioxide from the air, and replenish life giving oxygen.

Afforestation areas create a healthy environment in an urban environment. City people can reconnect with nature and the outdoors, themselves becoming healthier and happier. The entire city society benefits from this nature interconnectivity. Richard St. Barbe Baker spoke of spiritual renewal. Urban city folks such as the Fatlanders Fat Tire Brigade can bicycle or off leash dog walkers can meander on trails enjoying recreational, tourism and educational activities. Saskatoon Nature Society members ring birds and monitor bird counts, citizen scientists contribute to e-bird and i-naturalist. Photographers capture the natural beauty and esthetics of the area.

Afforestation areas do protect land from soil erosion and flooding. The Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the George Genereux Urban Regional Park are two of three afforestation areas in Saskatoon. These two are located on the south west peri-urban area of the city and are in the West Swale locale. The West Swale is subject to flooding and holding permanent and temporary wetlands as the Swale is a “low lying” area created from a major Pleistocene floodway channel. The West Swale is a striking geomorphological feature as it provides the historical evolution of the enormous events which happened during the culminating era of proglacial lakes and spillways which formed in central Saskatchewan. A truly remarkable period in geological history.

Forests provide crucial services for human well-being and economic development. They provide food, freshwater and fuel, support soil formation, regulate floods, climate and diseases, and can fill educational, medicinal, aesthetic and spiritual needs. They stabilize ecosystems, play an integral part in the carbon cycle, support livelihoods, and supply other goods and services that drive sustainable growth. Yet, forests are under stress from overexploitation, pollution, population pressure and the expansion and intensification of agricultural practices. With the additional impacts of climate change, forests are further threatened, and these adverse events may further impact land quality – leading to biodiversity loss, food insecurity, increased pests, reduced availability of clean water and increased vulnerability to environmental changes.” Luc Bas, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) European Regional Office Director.

A Green City Blanket

Eco-boulevards, seed posts, green roofs, vertical gardens, roof gardens, are all urban greenery which dispute the necessity for a “greyscape.” The afforestation areas, forests, riparian river zones, and park spaces can be joined by green building façades, vertical forests and garden rooftops throughout the city.
