Songs of the Songbirds!

International Dawn Chorus Day is the first Sunday of May! What an amazing day to listen for our Black-capped Chickadees, Robins, and Meadowlarks, with the Red-winged Blackbirds and Yellow-headed Blackbirds bringing in the harmony.

The day honours the birthdate of Chris Baines is an English naturalist, one of the UK’s leading independent environmentalists. He is a horticulturalist, landscape architect, naturalist, television presenter and author.

This year the first Sunday of May is May 1, when the City Nature Challenge is taking place! This year besides being Saskatoon’s first year for the City Nature Challenge, it is_ we believe_ to be the first year to record sounds on iNaturalist. Let us see how many song birds can be recorded for International Dawn Chorus Day! What great fun that will be! We will make an announcement at the end of the City Nature Challenge about how many people placed sound recordings during their time outside in nature.

For rare sightings during the City Nature Challenge CNCYXE don’t place your iNat observation on private but do protect your rare sightings with obscured! And do let us know, so that the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County can run a press release!

In Saskatoon and area we are taking part in #CNC2022! Join us between April 29 – May 2 as we take part in this International initiative to collect information about the wildlife flourishing in Saskatoon and area.

Researchers, school groups, citizens and wildlife enthusiasts across the world will be taking part in this race against the clock to put nature on the map, submitting photos and observations of wildlife in their neighbourhoods and greenspaces through the free, easy to use iNaturalist smart phone app.

New finds! Species that haven’t been recorded in particular areas before. Important finds of rare/endangered/threatened species. Observations that have a great story that go along with them. Really cool photos. Fun finds!

About this event

Come out to a nature connection event in a forest in Saskatoon. What is that? A forest? Don’t you know that the City of Saskatoon is on the prairies where there are grasslands? you say.

Well come on out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area to find some wonderfully delightful nature surprises in a man made forest on the prairies. (Map and directions) See attached map to arrive at the west side of Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area near the Saskatoon Italian Centre!

Did you know that

“The City Nature Challenge was founded by Alison Young and Rebecca Johnson of the California Academy of Sciences and Lila Higgins of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The first challenge was in the spring of 2016 between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Participants documented over 20,000 observations with the iNaturalist platform. In 2017, the challenge expanded to 16 cities across the United States and participants collected over 125,000 observations of wildlife in 5 days.In 2018, the challenge expanded to 68 cities across the world.In four days, over 441,000 observations of more than 18,000 species were observed, and over 17,000 people participated. The 2019 challenge more than doubled in scale, with almost a million observations of over 31,000 species observed by around 35,000 people.

Taking the competition beyond its US roots, the 2019 event was a much more international affair, with the winning city for observations and species coming from Africa (Cape Town), and three South American (La Paz, Tena and Quito) and two Asian areas (Hong Kong and Klang Valley) ranking in the top ten for number of observations.

In 2020, the organizers removed the competition aspect due to the COVID-19 pandemic, stating, “To ensure the safety and health of all participants, this year’s CNC is no longer a competition. Instead, we want to embrace the collaborative aspect of sharing observations online with a digital community, and celebrate the healing power of nature as people document their local biodiversity to the best of their ability.” Fewer observations were documented in 2020 than the prior year, though more species were found and more cities and people participated.

2021 saw record high numbers in every category, but as in the previous year, no winning cities were announced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”[source]

So this is Saskatoon’s very, very first year to be involved with the City Nature Challenge. Regina had their City Nature Challenge inauguration last year. They did amazing! Last year, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Nature Regina, Friends of Wascana Marsh, Nature Saskatchewan and the Nature Conservancy of Canada all came together in partnership to host the event in the Regina Area. They made 1,265 observations with a base of 293 species, 231 Identifiers assisted and 84 Observers scanned the green areas of Regina for what could be seen in the early spring. They found some pretty amazing observations for sure! This year, sound recordings of nature as well as observations can be included.

Identification Hints and Tips for iNaturalist

Where that YouTube hints and tips to become an “identifier” and place identifications upon the observations of other people, this YouTube provides hints and tips for making observations in the field so that the question “What is it?” can be answered.

That being said, basically the iNaturalist app is as easy as 1-2-3 to use!

So as we are making some exciting plans for National Forest Week, we would like to hear from you and your exciting adventures, and ways you are celebrating trees and forests in September. The theme for National Forest Week this year, 2021 is, “Our Forests – Continually Giving.”

Doesn’t that imagery just resonate with you? -Our Forests – Continually Giving-a delightful theme. National Forest Week hosted around Canada’s very own Maple Leaf Day is a time to explore the amazing benefits of trees and forests as they support biodiversity and ecosystems, mitigate flooding, raise the water table, absorb carbon dioxide, provide life-saving oxygen as well as providing amazing greenspace for recreation and healthy lifestyles. It’s a celebration to focus on forest heritage, culture, and history highlighting the importance of trees, their essential ecological services. It’s a time for residents to tell stories about their love of trees, and appreciation of forests and how very blessed we are.

The value of forests helps us take action for the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations such as good health and wellbeing, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action (forests are carbon sinks), life on land, peace justice and strong institutions, partnerships for the future we want.

Have you had a deep, meaningful holistic connection or experience with nature? Have you had the chance to explore and immerse yourself in the afforestation areas – Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area or George Genereux Urban Regional Park. These local forests are a great way to experience a mixed-woods boreal-like forest in a moist grasslands prairie eco-system without driving north past the tree-line.

Share how you are sharing your love of forests during National Forest Week, we would love to include your enthusiasm and plans in our calendar and let the world know how many forest guardians there are celebrating National Forest Week in September, 2021!

If you are a teacher or homeschooler we have been collecting some nature and forest curriculum based resources while developing our afforestation curriculum resources. How very exciting – so stay tuned!

We will let you in on a little secret about Saskatoon’s hidden treasures.

We are also proud to announce our planning for two 50th anniversaries. Whomever has heard of Richard St. Barbe Baker by some estimates the world’s first global conservationist, and very likely the world’s first climate change activist as well. Baker did amazing feats in the era before television and internet. Everyone knows David Suzuki and David Attenborough. Baker was a visionary ahead of his era, and has inspired the planting of over billions of trees during his lifetime, and later billions of trees were lanted by global organizations motivated and galvanized to action from Baker’s example.

We are also celebrating another 50th anniversary with the birthday for the afforestation areas in Saskatoon. This celebration is truly a way to focus our vision of living together on the land in the spirit of Witaskêwin, and highlight the rich geological, historical, natural, and cultural heritage of the areas to honour where we have been. Science, conservation, hands-on learning about the land, environment and sustainability ensure our future. Experience nature immersion at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

What is Cattail Foraging?

This Tourism Week across Canada we are running a series on cattail foraging! We agree with the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC), that “We encourage all Canadians this #TourismWeek, to take the pledge, and when you are able, plan and travel in Canada this year!“

Enjoy this Fermented Cattail Heart recipe, the little cattail shoots taste so much like cucumbers, and with a bit of radishes and garlic added to the brine, they come out amazing!

If you cut your newly harvested spring cattail shoot recipes into 1/2 inch rounds, then you can cook them up like shallots to enjoy! Here is an amazing Shallot and Garlic butter recipe that converts to nicely to cattails from Epicurus.

This Tourism Week we encourage you to have a “staycation” at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area or George Genereux Urban Regional Park in Saskatoon! In 326 acres, and 147.8 acres, there is lots of room to socially distance, and enjoy the mixed woodlands, meadows, wetlands and wildlife.

Stay tuned for more recipes during Tourism Week as we explore Cattail Nutrition and Cattail recipes. Did you know that the fresh spring cattail heads taste like corn on the cob?

A super easy recipe is to just barbecue your foraged cattail heads. Clean them first by rinsing, and soaking in vinegar, and then rinse off the vinegar. Next parboil them for a short while. Now you can brush a bit of olive oil on them and grill or barbecue them for a short while.

Also the pollen can be collected in paper bags, or by inserting the cattail head into a bottle? Just give the head a shake, while it is all wrapped up inside, and the pollen will be so easy to collect, and so healthy to add to any of your baking dishes, or to your rice pilaf or pasta dishes! Stay tuned for some more amazing cattail recipes!

Young cattails are loaded with nutrition, and according to specialty produce, cattails provide beta-carotene, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, potassium, phosphorus, and Vitamin C.

Cattails are a great way to try your hand at foraging, they are everywhere and are easily identifiable.

Alternatively, you can peel the fibers away, and eat the tender root. Parboil your root, and then grill with a sauce made from your favourite salad dressing!

Avoid harvesting your cattails with your puppy dogs with you in the spring while waterfowl are nesting. “For waterfowl, other marsh birds, and small mammals, broadleaf cattail provides food and important nesting, brooding, and loafing habitat. Broadleaf cattail is extremely important to common muskrats. It provides a major food source and important nesting habitats and materials” FEIS source

We agree with the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC), that “We encourage all Canadians this #TourismWeek, to take the pledge, and when you are able, plan and travel in Canada this year!“ Why not venture out to the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, and enjoy Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area or George Genereux Urban Regional park. They are great places to socially distance in 326 acres and 147.8 acres respectively.

Typha latifolia, the common cattail, or one of its varieties, will be found all over the Northern Hemisphere. There is everything to like about this plant: it’s all edible (and tasty!), easy to identify, and easy to harvest. This makes it both a fine staple and an excellent survival food.

COVID-19 “Outside Safely” Challenges:

To promote our Take It Outside Winter Staycation package and to introduce some very fun “Outside Safely” Challenges with prizes stay tuned through the months of January, February and March, 2021.

As events cannot be planned at this time, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. will have a lot of fun announcing a variety of winter challenges which will take place periodically over the winter months!

To begin: For anyone who joins the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. during the time period January to March, the member names will be entered into a draw for a special winter members prize “with a value of $50 to be awarded at the end of the challenge. A Terrera (formerly LNBF) Winmark Nylon, and tubular frame picnic tote.

with a value of $50 to be awarded at the end of the challenge.

The prize will be awarded in a COVID friendly way. We can drop it off to the recipient (in the City of Saskatoon) at their doorstep with appropriate social distancing, or the person who wins the prize can pick it up from the doorstep.
