This is especially true for the virtual smartphone wayfinding guide for the prairie forests of North America. Through the integration of traditional ecological knowledge and Indigenous heritage, this guide will provide an invaluable resource for all.

The prairie forests of North America, and in particular the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the George Genereux Urban Regional Park, are home to a rich diversity of plants and animals. Through the integration of Indigenous philosophies, this virtual guide can provide a model for how to relate to the land and restore and build relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The inclusion of Indigenous perspectives will provide an invaluable resource for all those seeking to explore and appreciate the natural world.

By utilizing traditional ecological knowledge and ethnobotany, this virtual guide will provide an in-depth look into the prairie forests and the flora and fauna that inhabit them. Through the use of Indigenous languages, this guide will also provide a unique window into the heritage and culture of the Indigenous communities that have lived in the prairie forests for generations.

The virtual guide will also be an invaluable resource for those looking to explore the prairie forests, the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the George Genereux Urban Regional Park. By providing GPS maps, descriptions, and photos of the flora and fauna, this virtual guide will make it easier for users to explore the prairie forests and appreciate all that they have to offer fostering environmental protection, conservation and guardianship.

By incorporating Indigenous perspectives into the virtual guide, this resource can be used to foster understanding and appreciation of the prairie forests and the Indigenous communities that have lived there for generations. Through the integration of traditional ecological knowledge, Indigenous heritage and culture, and Indigenous languages, this virtual guide will provide an invaluable resource for all who seek to explore and appreciate the natural world.

The ideal candidate for this stage one contract position -Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide App Editor / Content Writer- will have a degree in ecology, environmental studies, or a related field and will be knowledgeable about the prairie forest and its various plants, animals, and traditional uses to edit existing content and add missing interpretive stories. They must also have excellent communication skills, be organized and detail-oriented, and be comfortable working with a variety of software tools.

Have you ever sought to track the soul of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas into its most secret places, and to make these woodlands confess its dearest sins. The forest who would stir us now by its stories, legends and tales must either give us an entirely new background, or reveal to us the soul of the wildwoods. The forest as story-teller gives a glimpse into the story that he tells us. The forest has seen marvellous things through knotholes. Its background is a woven tapestry of tales. Meet the afforestation areas, and touch the surface of their hidden stories, their secret places, their point of view.

National Forest Week brings attention to our forests and trees from coast to coast across Canada. Our forests and trees provide habitats for wildlife, insects, polllinator species, birds and so much more! What is the ‘triple environmental emergency we are facing?

1. Loss of biodiversity
2. Climate change
3. Out of control pollution.

Out of control pollution.
Our native biodiversity needs wild spaces, food and homes such as trees and forests provide in which to thrive. Forests, tree planting, and forest conservation initiatives are nature-based solutions towards climate action. Pollution, pesticides, herbicides are escalating the extinction events. Creating safe, organic forest spaces is a large step to halt and slow down the silent sixth mass extinction event of invertebrates, the planet’s bird food on wings. Ornithologists and botanists have noticed that the songbird, and raptor populations have declined by a staggering 48%. The monitored wildlife populations are reduced by a catastrophic 68%. A loss of forests and habitats have caused over 2/3 of our animal populations to totally disappear.

Richard St. Barbe Baker said it this way, “If a person loses one third of his or her skin, the person will die; if a tree loses a third of its bark, the tree will die, and if the world loses a third of its trees, the world will die.
We live less that five minutes without air and the trees give us air we breathe. We live less than five days without water, and trees are absolutely essential in the water cycle. We live less than five weeks without food, and without the trees we could not grow food.” (Filson, Bruce K. October 7, 1982, Western People, p. 5)

It may be that in some of my readers’ minds—those who, like the sceptical friends and those who have been in the afforestation areas whom perhaps you have met. They are not distinctly conscious of the cause or secret of the expression of the afforestation areas—some doubt may still remain after what has been said of this place, of these wildwoods. Such a doubt ought to disappear when the time and history are considered, and when it is found that the expression peculiar to trees and greenspaces varies infinitely in degree, and is always greatest in those shades of the colour which come nearest to the most beautiful spring and autumnal colors to grace the viewer. What do you know about the afforestation areas?

The afforestation areas are an enigma. There are so many secrets to unravel!

Come to the film Wildwoods of Saskatoon where it will be revealed —the secret of their charm. What has been hiding? Linking communities, and nations to encourage sustainability.

A film to disseminate the narratives of tree planting, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Life On Land, and the imperative of forests worldwide.

Join the celebration at the Remai Modern Friday July 22 at 7:00 pm CST as the local community comes forward to value cultural heritage, heritage education, and new ways of exploring conservation collaboration.

What is intangible heritage? Experience the richness of Richard St. Barbe Baker as the film commemorates the centenary of the International Tree Foundation founded by this global conservationist on July 22, 1922.

It is the heritage of our city, and the heritage of the world. Bringing together memories and celebrating our story. It’s capturing the lost and forgotten and celebrating the significance of nature based solutions to climate change as foreseen by Richard St. Barbe Baker, a visionary ahead of his time.

Send in your cool/unusual/rare sightings! What is way interesting during the City Nature Challenge April 29- May 2? That is only three days away! Wow

For rare sightings during the City Nature Challenge CNCYXE don’t place your iNat observation on private but do protect your rare sightings with obscured! And do let us know, so that the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County can run a press release!

In Saskatoon and area we are taking part in #CNC2022! Join us between April 29 – May 2 as we take part in this International initiative to collect information about the wildlife flourishing in Saskatoon and area.

Researchers, school groups, citizens and wildlife enthusiasts across the world will be taking part in this race against the clock to put nature on the map, submitting photos and observations of wildlife in their neighbourhoods and greenspaces through the free, easy to use iNaturalist smart phone app.

New finds! Species that haven’t been recorded in particular areas before. Important finds of rare/endangered/threatened species. Observations that have a great story that go along with them. Really cool photos. Fun finds!

Indigenous Perspective

SK Arts

We are so excited that our project is recognized by SK Arts, a public arts funder. We are very thankful that due to receiving this grant from SK Arts, our project will now be able to move forward in a timely manner to bring an Indigenous perspective to interpreting the heritage and ecology of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the George Genereux Urban Regional park, our two Saskatoon afforestation areas replete in cultural, geographical, historical, and natural heritage.

The Indigenous and Métis history of the land that is part of the afforestation areas is one of the many stories which can be told. The Old Bone Trail, by which Métis brought buffalo bones to the rail yards in Saskatoon, passed through the RSBBAA.

There is a wealth of heritage from identifying traditional connections with nature, as well as present day local plant names and the use of native plants for healing and medicinal purposes.

Thank you kindly for your consideration in this matter. This is a wonderful project for the 50th anniversary of our Saskatoon Afforestation Areas indeed.

This is in keeping with the spirit of Witaskêwin, living together on the land.  We believe this project can be part of an effective long-term strategy to focus our vision on this ideal. In a significant way this project allows the past to meet the present and future. The rich geological, historical, natural, and cultural heritage of the areas honours where we have been.  Science, conservation, and hands on learning and interpretive education increases awareness of the City’s environmental goals to ensure our strategic goals are aligned into the future. 

If we commemorate, honour and respect the past, and celebrate the present we can provide a legacy for the future.  These stories provide residents and visitors alike, the story of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, George Genereux Urban Regional Park, and the West Swale to increase the awareness of the mosaic of unique natural, cultural, geological and historic features.

There are amazing ways to create art.  Songs and  music may commemorate nature.  Poetry may ring out the praises of the environment.  Photography, scientific illustrations and drawings may also be artistic.  Henry David Thoreau, and Richard St. Barbe Baker among many others wrote about nature, and trees.  There are many ways of communicating adaptation to climate change: the art and science of public engagement when climate change comes home.  Which way is the most appealing?  Why? Which makes the most impact?  Climate Change Art Helps People Connect With A Challenging Topic. The enormity of climate change, and how it affects the earth can be overwhelming, and stressful.   Art is one personal method of taking action, of making a difference.

During Canada’s 150 anniversary, is it possible to compile 150 Forest Stories of Saskatoon?

Canadian Forestry Association announces 2017 National Forest Week , September 24th to 30th, 2017, Theme: Canada’s Forests: Our stories, Our Future  Celebrating Canada’s Forests!

The Canadian Institute of Forestry has a 2017 National Forest Week Event Calendar whereupon, the citizens can celebrate National Forest Week locally with the 150 Forest Story event in Saskatoon.

The Canadian Forestry Association invite you to celebrate National Forest week in your neck of the wood!
