We along with Tony Rinaudo are excited to let you know that his new autobiography The Forest Underground: Hope for a Planet in Crisis, will be published on April 30^th 2022 by ISCAST–Christians in Science and Technology – see media release, first chapter sample, and product info sheet attached. In this book, Rinaudo tells the story of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR): what led me to spend 17 years in Niger, the moment of revelation, the challenges of working with rural communities, how a miracle emerged from a crisis, and the global spread of FMNR today.

At its core, this is a story of hope against all the odds. In a seemingly hopeless situation, this is a good-news story that will move hearts and hands to care for the planet. This story will be a powerful tool in the global FMNR movement, and in providing a nature-based solution to climate-change.

Tony Rinaudo, the forest-maker, is the winner of the Right Livelihood Award. Rinaudo is a Natural Resources Management Specialist and agronomist. FMNR is a winner of the 2019 World Future Council’s Agroecology Best Practice award. Farmer-managed natural regeneration (FMNR) is a low-cost, sustainable land restoration technique used to combat poverty and hunger amongst poor subsistence farmers in developing countries by increasing food and timber production, and resilience to climate extremes. It involves the systematic regeneration and management of trees and shrubs from tree stumps, roots and seeds. Tony was awarded an Order of Australia (AM) for services to Conservation in 2019.

Tony Rinaudo was a speaker in the Legacy of Saskatoon’s Secret Forest, as he was profoundly influenced by Richard St. Barbe Baker, Global Conservationist.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. did register as a successful side event for the Climate Adaptation Summit 2021 which took place 25-26 January 2021. The programme explores nature based solutions, weather-wise cities, resilient cities locally led adaptation as well as supporting events, side events along with the anchoring events.

The Climate Adaptation Summit 2021 states “Our planet is getting warmer, which has a growing impact on our societies and economies. We need to adapt to a new, more extreme climate.“

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. know how important afforestation areas are in their role as carbon sinks in this era of climate change.
