Another species at risk

Well, the City of Saskatoon and Meewasin Valley Authority were right. Canvassing the afforestation areas does show that these semi-wilderness areas do provide habitats conducive to flora and fauna including species at risk. The count is up to around twenty species at risk at the current moment. Thank you to everyone using iNaturalist and helping to document the species in the afforestation areas.

Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura), species at risk

There is a new species at risk are the Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura spotted out at the afforestation areas.

There is actually a Turkey Vulture Tracking Program going on. Dr Stuart Housten and Martin Stoffel have been the leaders in the Saskatchewan research on these birds. Here is an article written abut Tracking Saskatchewan Nestling Turkey Vultures by Housten before his passing.

WinterYXE Strategy SURVEY

 Your input is required by survey to provide input to the City of Saskatoon by Monday February 22! Today is Saturday February 20, you have two days to read and complete your survey. The draft implementation plan for the WinterYXE Strategy is online for reading.

Winter is fantastic, there are so many opportunities and ways to enjoy Saskatoon. Getting outside is particularly amazing during COVID.

Enjoying the Winter Staycation at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area Winter Wonderland is pretty sweet! The Polar Vortex has passed, and it is just delightful to be outside these days!!! (That being said, ski pants and proper winter apparel even made the Polar Vortex pretty darn good to be outside)

Tell the city that you liked climbing and playing on the snow hills created this year for the first time ever in the southwest off leash recreation area.

Mention that the new Winter Staycation is absolutely fantastic!

Let the city know that walking through the forest is bliss in our windy city. The trees act as a spectacular wind break so people can enjoy the great outdoors.

There are many and several considerations to learn about in the Draft WintercityYXE Implementation Plan and the online survey is a fantastic way of adding your opinion.
