Seeking a Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide App Editor (contract position)

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. is looking for a passionate individual to join a project to create an interactive mobile app that will help promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons regarding perspectives on this 474 acres of greenspace land. The app will provide a platform for cross-cultural learning about the flora, fauna, and historic and cultural history of this land.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. is looking for an experienced and creative app editor who can create an engaging and informative interactive app experience. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with the team to create an interactive guide that educates and engages users in an immersive and interactive way.

The app editor will work with the development team to create an intuitive user experience while incorporating features that will make the app interactive and engaging. The app editor will be responsible for researching and gathering information on the flora, fauna, and historic and cultural history of the land, as well as working with the development team to create visuals and audio elements.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures, as well as experience with app editing and development. The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse team.

End of Day 3 CNCYXE2022

It is the end of May 1, the third day of the Saskatoon City Nature Challenge April 29 to May 2. Thanks to everyone who has added observations on iNaturalist! Come out on Monday May 2, and make a difference!

It was an interesting day to follow through on the Insect Workshop. So, when you take a peek into pond water of marshes like the Chappell Marsh at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, there are bugs in the water swimming around! Here is a Pond Life video of the Caddisfly larva which was found! And following up on the Fungi including Lichen Workshop, 60 different observations have taken place for Lichen and shelf fungi are being noted at this time of the year.

Species at Risk

As many naturalist know who come out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and to George Genereux Urban Regional Park there are goldenrods (Solidago.) The species of goldenrods overlap the two parks, and yet there are different species of goldenrods in each park as the native plants combined with the different and varied combination of deciduous and evergreen plantings giving rise to different microbiomes as you progress through the afforestation area greenspaces.

This species at risk- Goldenrod Gall Fly (Eurosta solidaginis) – was discovered through citizen science on the iNaturalist app.

Thank you to RCE Saskatchewan Education for Sustainable Development for this honour. The Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park are a mixed woodlands situated in the West Swale of Saskatoon. Through the Green Vision, Saskatoon will continue to have valued afforestation areas to mitigate climate change, therefore, heritage, semi wilderness wildlife habitats and recreational greenspace will be safe and protected. In the 2013-2023 CoS Strategic Plan, then city manager, Murray Totland asks, “What would Saskatoon look like if it grew to half a million people? And then we need to consider, “What do we want it to look like?” Our 2020 Green vision is for a healthy, safe green space with thriving and diverse ecosystems with protection of wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands, and an inter-connected West Swale eco-system to support sustainable growth and environmental leadership.

The City of Saskatoon CoS and P4G are currently planning 7-8 neighbourhoods with 70,000 people, a new employment sector, and a rural industrial-commercial area all next to the afforestation areas. The Cities of Saskatoon, Martensville and Warman, the Town of Osler and the RM of Corman Park have formed the Saskatoon North Partnership for Growth (P4G).

Our 2020 Green Vision pro-actively engages, and seeks protections regarding these urban afforestation areas and their ecosystem. The environmental non-profit charity, Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. formed to protect and preserve these significant heritage sites by ensuring safety, restoring, developing, and maintaining the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas with a view to commemorating the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas and educating the public about them. The 2020 green vision supports environmental sustainability. The Friends encourage management and cost-effective solutions for addressing the challenges to sustainably support the environment. The Friends work towards environmental sustainability through research, education, policy change, collaboration and partnerships in achieving targets. Education enhancing pro-active actions, investments and expanded capacity stops the degradation of the ecosystem, the loss of biodiversity and increases the recognition of the aesthetic, natural, historic, cultural, social and spiritual importance of the afforestation areas in our application for municipal heritage status.

Every past and future trash cleanup sees continued improvement, yet more is needed, such as the need for improvements, protections and education to keep up with the growing population, increasing pressures and demands on the ecosystem. Sustainability is indeed, thinking about the day after tomorrow. The critical habitat of the Horned Grebe, one of the federally listed species, is subject to illegal motorized vehicle trespass along the wetlands shoreline, resulting in invasive species, habitat loss, and nutrient loading from illegal trash dumping.

Managing woodland ecosystems sustainability will maintain the biodiversity and protect the small yellow lady’s slipper listed in the provincial rare species database. “The significant problems we face today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” Albert Einstein. Environmental stewardship and guardian roles for youth, and afforestation area users are enhanced through place-based learning. Ecosystem sustainability education brings awareness, networking and education brings about the capacity for successful conservation. “In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.” Baba Dioum.

The afforestation areas were preserved in perpetuity in 1972 by city council The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. is a non-profit charitable incorporation formed with a mission to honour the council decision of 1972, and to continue onwards to conserve the Saskatoon afforestation areas which we love. During the COVID-19 protocols come out with i-Naturalist loaded on your smart phone to help document the biodiversity and enjoy the afforestation areas with social distancing. A BOTTLE DRIVE done safely!!! During the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot go door to door asking for bottles, but we can post our virtual bottle drive, and arrange a safe pick up.

If you should wish to support a forest and wetlands in the city, we are a non-profit charity raising money to protect these wonderful afforestation areas!

Please phone us for a recycling bottle drive pick up! We will come, and store the bottles in a garage until SARCAN re-opens. So, if you have too many bottles laying around- and they are just in the way, then do some community good, protect some endangered species, work towards saving a forest, wetlands and grasslands in Saskatoon and DONATE YOUR BOTTLES TO A BOTTLE DRIVE!

Day to day environmental learning, tidbits of information posted every day during Earth Month. Unfortunately with great thought it is wise to reduce suffering, so our planned spring outdoor gatherings have been cancelled to respect the COVID-19 protocols so as to not put people at risk in group gatherings – postponed are the bio-blitzes, scavenger hunts, tours, and Clean Green Community Scene volunteer cleanup. We are adding to our website daily online activities for the month of April which involve interaction, education and awareness about Earth Month with a focus on the Earth Month Theme Climate Change.

Ontario takes the preservation of this endangered species very seriously and has compiled a management plan. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources considers species at risk, natural, valued and protected, and to this end have documented ways to help the Horned Grebe. What does the Province of Saskatchewan say? The Species at Risk Act SARA, similarly has a recovery strategy. Committee On The Status Of Endangered Wildlife In Canada COSEWIC has an assessment and status report written up for the Horned Grebe Podiceps auritus. The Government of Canada has developed a species profile and action plan in its Species at Risk Act Action Plan Series.

Did you know that “The federal, provincial, and territorial government signatories under the Accord for the Protection of Species at Risk (1996)^Footnote2. agreed to establish complementary legislation and programs that provide for effective protection of species at risk throughout Canada?”

In 2018, Saskatchewan’s Wildlife protection act was 20 years old, and it was found then that the Sask. law falls short when it comes to protecting wildlife: prof

EcoJustice has written up a report; Failure to Protect: Grading Canada’s Species at Risk Laws. This is the Government of Canada Activity Set Back Distance Guidelines for Prairie Plant Species at Risk and the Wild Plant and Animals Protected news release from Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management Minister.

“Mother nature has given us a strong signal through this pandemic: we must change our habits and slow down if we are going to continue living on this planet. It is a perfect time to make people realize on a global level that flattening the curve of climate change and environmental destruction is just as important as flattening the curve for COVID-19. It’s a perfect time to formulate and refine your ideas and put the planning and strategy in place to make them happen.” Marianna Muntianu UN Environment Program

The Saskatchewan Government reports; “Despite many programs focused on maintaining and enhancing wildlife populations, some species have become threatened with extinction and require special attention to help ensure their survival. The mission of the Saskatchewan species at risk program is to protect species from extirpation or extinction and to prevent new species from becoming threatened with extinction. ”

The Government of Saskatchewan protects species at risk and their habitats from risks to their survival associated with human activity.

The Canadian-Saskatchewan Agreement on Species at Risk; “Species at risk protection and recovery in Saskatchewan will, to the extent possible, be designed and delivered in a manner tailored to address the ecological, social and economic circumstances of the province; Planning and actions to prevent species from becoming at risk, and to protect and recover species that have been identified as being at risk will be informed by the best available information on the biological status of a species, including scientific knowledge, community knowledge and aboriginal traditional knowledge”

So, as one can see, there are numerous plans and strategies in regards to the Horned Grebe. What exists Nationally, Provincially and Municipally for the other endangered species which exist in the afforestation area locally? Both the horned grebe and barred tiger salamander are listed as a species of special concern by the Committee On The Status Of Endangered Wildlife In Canada – an Independent Advisory Panel to the Minister Of Environment and Climate Change. The Red-necked Phalarope, Baird’s Sparrow and Grasshopper Sparrow are special concern, and Bobolink, Bank Swallow is threatened nationally under the federal Species at Risk Act SARA Schedule 1. According to Chet Neufeld, Executive Director Native Plant Society referencing “the provincial rare species database, there have been occurrences of endangered Whooping Cranes observed near the area in 2017 and an occurrence of Small Yellow Lady’s-slipper (date unknown)” (email Dec 25, 2019) The Small Yellow Lady’s Slipper was indeed confirmed with another sighting by the Saskatoon Nature Society.

On Friday April 17, there are 5 days before the April 22 and the 50th birthday of Earth Day celebration! This year’s Earth Day 2020 theme is Climate Action, which will be explored during Earth Month.

At Nature Saskatchewan the Stewards of Saskatchewan program are calling for people to reach out to them with species at risk sightings as the spring season begins. If you have a sighting you would like to share please call 1-800-667-4668 (HOOT) or email a program staff member.

April 19, 2020 is the cutoff date for this crowd fundraiser should you care to do your part for the environment during Earth Month. Any funding raised would help to erect motorized vehicle barriers to protect the afforestation areas, and therefore protect the wetlands from illegal motorized vehicle trespass.

And if you care to make a donation too 😉 Not only do vehicle mitigation barriers help the Horned Grebe, but they also help school children, class field trips from being run over from illegal motorized vehicle trespass, and the semi-wilderness habitat, and the other endangered species, as well as all the users to the afforestation areas! Raising funds to erect vehicle mitigation barriers, also places stops on illegal trash dumping, which is also way cool!

Is your art style art nouveau, caricature, cartoon or totally realistic? Are you going to draw a bird in flight, sitting on a nest, swimming on the water as waterfowl do, walking on the ground, waiting for food like a baby bird would or climbing down the trunk of a tree like a nuthatch?

Do you prefer to draw with pen and ink, with charcoal, pencil, chalk, oil pastels or perhaps colored pencils? What kind of medium do you draw on – would you choose paper, construction paper, toilet paper, birch bark, paper towels, newspaper, glossy magazine paper, bristol board, cardboard, lined or graph paper?

Couldn’t resist adding toilet paper in, as there seems to be some hoarding going on, so there may be an abundance of toilet paper on which to draw pictures of your bird/s.

On Wednesday April 8, there are two weeks before the Earth Day celebration! This year’s Earth Day 2020 theme is Climate Action, which will be explored during Earth Month.

During your time spent drawing birds, consider the local birds which you may no longer see around anymore because they are endangered. Consider what actions could be taken to protect endangered species. A lot of thought has gone into what actions are needed to protect homo sapiens during the COVID-19 pandemic, what actions are needed for our local avian endangered species?

The horned grebe and barred tiger salamander are listed as a species of special concern by the Committee On The Status Of Endangered Wildlife In Canada – an Independent Advisory Panel to the Minister Of Environment and Climate Change.
