The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. (Friends) is focused on the protection and enhancement of the Richard St Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (RSBBAA) and the adjacent George Genereux Urban Regional Park (GGURP). We aim to increase public awareness about these large naturalized heritage areas, created by tree planting, and involve the community in both using and taking care of them. We use our extensive research on the geological, ecological and cultural history of these protected areas of the West Swale to contribute to Saskatoon’s green infrastructure and heritage planning. We are developing place-based learning opportunities in the afforestation areas alongside community and school groups, and in cooperation with civic authorities. Having organized several successful community-based clean-ups of the areas we are actively working to prevent further misuse by placing signage and barriers to illegal entry. Our general educational activities align with and enhance the City’s environmental goals.

Challenges and Prizes

Did the “Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc“, non profit environmental charity mention that there are challenges and an opportunity to be eligible to win prizes? Tomorrow is Monday February 15, family day in Saskatchewan.

Well, during COVID-19 there are Public Health Organisation regulations to not arrange an event with a date and a time. So, our Take It Outside Winter Staycation programming has some amazing challenges to promote being “Outside Safely.”

Our challenges are set up for your family or your personal COVID bubble to come out to the 326 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and have a lot of fun!

With family day coming up, try this activity. At home place a couple of drops of food colouring in a balloon you have freshly removed from a bag of balloons. Then take the balloon and enclose the mouth of the balloon around the water tap, and fill the balloon up. Like making a coloured water balloon.

Make a few of these and put them outside to freeze. Place them in your vehicle and come on out to the afforestation area. When you arrive you can walk your dog in the South West off leash recreation area, and place your creations (remove the rubber balloon, and just leave the coloured ice) alongside the dog park fence or up on the snow piles created by the bulldozers this year! What a great way to cheer up the edges of the forest pathways!

They will even make superlative sun catchers for everyone to enjoy. Take a picture of your snow globes which you have placed in the afforestation area, and send the email in to friendsafforestation@gmail.com to be entered into the prize draw. Yay!

Winter Bird Feeders

Feeding birds in the winter time can provide a source of enjoyment for many people. The observation of a variety of birds is amazing to experience as they find and come to the feeder station.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. Winter Staycation Brochure (download) provides a listing of those winter birds who may frequent the bird feeders in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

Whether you are a novice or experienced bird watcher, it is a delight to see the flight of the black-capped chickadee arriving at the bird feeder. The chickadee does not swoop straight in an undulating or bouncing flight pattern. If one was to describe it on a piece of paper, it may look like a sine wave with curves up and down. The call or song of the black-capped chickadee is quite distinctive as a chickadee-dee-dee-dee. Though it will vary in their spring territory call which is a long high note followed by two lower short notes.

Besides the black-capped chickadee, the northern flicker is common in the afforestation area as is the bohemian waxwing. There is for sure the possibility the chance of seeing plethora of species depending on your time for observation, the weather, and when you arrive during the day.

Place a bird feeder in a site sheltered and protected from strong winter blizzard winds. The bird feeder should have a large canopy to keep snow and ice away from the bird seed placed out. Think of bird predators and squirrels who may also enjoy lunch at the bird feeder. If the bird feeder is placed near natural cover which will assist perching birds assess the bird feeder station area for safety.

Clean the bird feeder regularly. Bird balls and suet feeders also provide nutritious snacks for wild birds. Black oil sunflower seeds provides fat to birds which is a necessary nutrient. Birds require extra fat to keep them going through the long cold days. This bird feed may attract a good variety of birds. Nyger seeds, sunflower seeds and peanuts are also winter bird feeder choices. Try filling different locations of bird feeders with different seed to see what species of birds are attracted to the change of food.

As you embark on a winter bird feeding strategem, remember that some species of worms are meat eaters, seeking out insects, grasshoppers worms over the other months. A winter surprise of mealworms may provide the wild birds with a treat. Fruit is enjoyed by many birds. Placing out apples, bananas citrus fruits may be enjoyed by your several bird visitors. Consider spreading some peanut butter on an apple and add bits of peanuts and raisins. Remember to not place such a treat where dogs would reach it, as dogs cannot have raisins or they will have seizures.

In 2021 February experienced a terrific arctic cold front setting records with -53 Celsius records. At times like these, it is vitally important to keep any bird feeders topped up which birds may have become dependent upon.

Some birds are more comfortable feeding from the ground. Think of what other animals may be nearby which may pose a hazard to the birds feeding from the ground. Once in a while step on the snow at the base of the bird feeder, to provide ease of access to the ground feeding birds.

Partipate in the Christmas Bird Count and the Backyard Bird Count February 12-15, 2021 Register your count on the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Areas E-bird hotspot, Baker Area Eco-Quest on iNaturalist or on the Cornell Lab Audubon web pages.

SDG 13 Climate Change

Go for the goals! (Sustainable Development Goals) International Development Week, February 7-13 2021 Canada

Today, February 13, is the last day of International Development Week February 7-13 2021 theme Go for the Goals – the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Get involved!

Goal 13 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals addresses Climate Action. There area amazing nature-based solutions to climate change. Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889-1992) was a visionary. By some estimates, organisations Richard St. Barbe Baker founded, assisted and inspired were responsible for planting at least 26 billion trees, internationally, even during his lifetime.

As part of the Take It Outside challenge, come out to the afforestation area for a walk. Determine which trees are native, and which ones were planted during the 1972 afforestation under the Green Survival Program. Add an observation to the iNaturalist app about the trees, and send an email friendsafforestation@gmail.com with a photo of a tree you believe is native, and a photo of a tree you think has been planted. The email will allow you to be entered into the draw for a prize for completing this challenge.

Richard St. Barbe Baker founded the International Tree Foundation which started as the Watu Wya Miti. This phrase from the country of Kenya, and the Kiyuyu peoples roughly translates as Men of the Trees, Forest Scout or Forest Guide. As a forest guide, a solemn pledge was taken to plant at least ten trees every year, take care of trees everywhere, and do a good deed every day.

By coming out to the afforestation area, and making identifications and photographs, it is a great first step to taking care of trees everywhere.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas have listed their exciting “Winter Staycation” to promote being “Outside Safely” with Nutrien WinterShines – Saskatchewan’s Premier Winter Festival taking place February 15 – 21, 2021. Our non profit environmental charity wish to thank the City of Saskatoon for the Take It Outside Grant to make this programming possible.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. non profit environmental charity is proud to present a COVID friendly Take It Outside Winter Staycation programs and challenges at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. Our challenges posted online provide incentive to “take it outside.” Register your participation for prizes! We promote an “Outside Safely” lifestyle with social distancing in the large space (326 acres) Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Areas encouraging COVID bubbles to take part exciting winter challenges for the Nutrien WinterShines – Saskatchewan’s Premier Winter Festival! Fresh snow! Going out in the winter time when there is freshly fallen snow on the ground is an amazing experience. A heavy snowfall covers everthing in a thick blanket of white. In the kingdoms of Scotland and England, this may be called an “onding.” As compared to a light snow, which may be referred to as a “skift” of snow.

Now then, if you happen to come out to the afforestation areas first thing after a blizzard when the ground is covered in a delightful onding of snow, then keep your eyes peeled. The marvels of prints in the snow are a true source of wonder.

Large tracks, small claws, tails, all make their unique imprint into the freshly fallen snow.

Saskatoon’s World Famous Conservationist: Richard St. Barbe Baker, the Man of the Trees EVENT

Poster8-5x11 What did Saskatoon’s Global Conservationist do? Who is Baba Wya Miti, loving father of trees? Where are the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas?

Paul Hanley, author and Robert White, ecologist will introduce Richard St. Barbe Baker, founder of the international Men of the Trees organisation in 1922, now known as the International Tree Foundation. Both knew this acclaimed “Man of the Trees” personally. He was a visionary pioneer who outspokenly campaigned for trees and forests and their multiple benefits – watershed protection, preventing soil erosion, mitigating climate change, providing habitats for animals and places for re-creation for humans. You will hear about his indefatigable drive, his daring accomplishments, his links to Saskatoon and his encounters with with President FDR, and with popes, prime ministers, and personalities of his time.

You will also learn about Baba Wya Miti and Chief Ironhorse. Where is the West Swale? George Genereux Urban Regional Park & Richard St. Barbe Baker Park Afforestation Areas are two amazing forest green spaces in Saskatoon, one named in the legacy of this great champion of trees. Find out where are they? Why are they? What is the West Swale? What is the Yorath Island Spillway?

Robert White, BSA, MES, Ecologist and personal acquaintance of Richard St. Barbe Baker winner of the Richard St. Barbe Baker award. Robert White, spoke to the City of Saskatoon Standing policy committee on planning, development, and community services about the great humanitarian, and forester, Richard St. Barbe Baker the namesake of the Richard St Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. Robert White spoke “to the importance of the preservation of the area and expressed support for some type of barriers to protect the area.”

What was Richard St. Barbe Baker’s mission, that he imparted to the Watu Wa Miti, the very first forest scouts or forest guides? To protect the native forest, plant ten native trees each year, and take care of trees everywhere.
