Understanding the Impact of Fire Bans on Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park

The current fire bans implemented by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency have important implications for natural areas such as the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park. These parks, spanning 132 hectares (326 acres) and 60 hectares (148 acres) respectively, have experienced nine years of consecutive drought, making them particularly susceptible to fire risks. It is crucial to examine the fire ban regulations and understand how they protect these vulnerable ecosystems.

Do YOU like the forests? Please HELP! As the saying goes, “Only YOU can prevent forest fires”

Under the fire ban declared by the RM of Corman Park, all outdoor fires within the Rural Municipality are prohibited. This includes fire pits, burning barrels, controlled burns, and even fireworks. The ban aims to prevent any accidental ignition that could lead to a destructive wildfire. However, internal household fireplaces and gas-fueled equipment, such as propane barbecues or propane fire pits, are exceptions to this ban.

Be Firewise, Preserve Paradise!

In addition to the RM fire ban, the City of Saskatoon has its own bylaw, the Fire and Protective Services Bylaw (No 7990), which provides guidelines for open-air fires when there is NO FIRE BAN. During a FIRE BAN, there are NO FIRES. The bylaw states that open-air fires must be contained in a non-combustible receptacle constructed of cement, brick, or sheet metal with specific thickness requirements. The fuel for these fires should consist only of charcoal or cut, seasoned wood. Burning materials such as rubbish, garden refuse, manure, livestock or animal carcasses, and any material that generates black smoke or an offensive odor is strictly prohibited.

Furthermore, when there is no fire ban, open-air fires must be reasonably supervised, adequately ventilated, and not set in windy conditions. They should not cause interference with the use and enjoyment of another person’s property, and there are specific time restrictions for setting open-air fires between 2:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Discharging firearms or fireworks in parks or recreation facilities also requires written permission from the City.

In addition, City of Saskatoon Bylaw No. 8286, The Smoking Control Bylaw prohibits smoking or vaping in outdoor public places owned or operated by the City. This includes parks and trails, playgrounds, sports fields, spray pads, outdoor and paddling pools, skateboard sites, golf courses, tennis courts, dog parks, public squares and areas around civic buildings.

These fire ban regulations and bylaws are crucial for protecting the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park from potential fire hazards. The nine consecutive years of drought have left these areas more vulnerable to wildfires, and strict fire bans are necessary to mitigate the risks and preserve the natural habitats within these parks.

It is essential for visitors, residents, and communities to respect and comply with these fire bans and regulations. By refraining from activities that could inadvertently cause fires and by following the guidelines set by the RM and City, we can collectively safeguard these valuable natural spaces. Respecting the fire bans and adhering to the restrictions is an act of responsible citizenship that helps protect the environment and ensures the safety of both humans and wildlife.

As we navigate through the fire season, it is crucial to stay informed about the current fire ban status in your area. Keep updated with information provided by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, municipal authorities, and local fire departments. Exploring the Wild Side: How to Stay Safe and Have Fun in Afforestation Areas

Saskatoon, a city in Canada, is home to two semi-wild afforestation areas totalling 474 acres which may from time to time serve as a habitat for coyotes, among other wildlife. This is true of any greenspace along the river, or within the city. While coyotes are an essential component of the ecosystem, the City of Saskatoon has issued an advisory reminding the public to be cautious around these animals as they can be unpredictable when confronted. To ensure safety, the city advises people to keep their distance from coyotes, never approach them, and keep pets on a leash and under control.

To minimize human-wildlife encounters and conflicts, Coyote Watch Canada recommends being aware of the diversity of wildlife in the community and using common sense and preventative techniques. People should not leave food waste in accessible areas or feed coyotes. For homeowners, they should also seal off access to decks and other sheltered spaces in their yard, not feed pets outdoors, and ensure fencing is in good condition.

Coyote sightings often increase due to humans intentionally or unintentionally providing a food source. For instance, overflowing bird feeders, mishandled compost, and fallen fruit attract a diverse range of prey species, such as rodents, squirrels, chipmunks, and insects, which coyotes will utilize as food. Additionally, it is important to always remember to scoop your dog’s poop while walking in the afforestation areas as it may attract coyotes looking for a potential food source. People should also consider that birds and small mammals that frequent bird feeder stations are potential prey for other predator species such as owls, hawks, foxes, and domestic pets. New infrastructure such as roads, fencing, and urbanization impacts how wildlife moves throughout communities. Urban boundary expansion creates a loss of habitat and green spaces for wildlife. Coyotes and other wildlife species must adjust to their ever-changing world and may be forced to establish new territories to hunt and forage for sustenance. Dens are destroyed through development activities, and the resilient coyote responds to these environmental impacts.

Coyote sightings are influenced by seasonal behavior, such as the mating period, courtship, den selection/pup rearing, and dispersal of juvenile or yearling family members. By promoting respect, compassion, and safety education throughout the community about these intelligent, adaptable keystone species, we can safely coexist with coyotes. Coyote vocalizations are a coyote’s specialized means of communicating danger, locating pack members, defending territory, and survival skills for pups. Vocalizing acts as an effective ‘canid GPS’. Their series of high-pitched yips, barks, and howls can be heard more frequently during certain times of the year.

To coexist safely with coyotes, it is important to be aware of their behavior and understand how to react when encountering them. By following the City of Saskatoon advisory and Coyote Watch’s tips, we can reduce the risk of human-wildlife conflicts and ensure the safety of both people and coyotes.

The City of Saskatoon advisory states; “If you have any questions or concerns regarding coyotes or other wildlife within City limits, please contact Urban Biological Services at 306-975-3300. If an emergency occurs, please contact Saskatoon Police Service at 306-975-8300.” For your information, the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park are both within City limits.

The International City Nature Challenge will be coming back this spring! The City Nature Challenge is an international effort to document nature in cities taking place from April 28 to May 1, 2023.

Clean UP Sat Sept 24

Thank you is extended to all the clean up volunteers all those from the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, from SOS Trees, from Saskatoon Search and Rescue, from the members of the general public who heard about the afforestation areas or who are users of the afforestation areas.

It is true what is said that many hands make light work. The clean up began at 9:30, and before the estimated end time of 1:30 the very large Loraas dumpster was filled to the top, and another one was about 3/4 full! It is hard to believe.

But it was so rewarding to know that the fencing will go up around the greenspace which no longer has trash in it, so it will be safe for park users of all ages. It will be nice to enjoy both Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, and George Genereux realizing that they are a great deal safer, now that the garbage is cleared out, and the fencing is going up to mitigate more continual trash dumping!!! Wow!

So again. Thanks to the volunteers. Thanks to Regan Olson, environmental protection officer at the City of Saskatoon. Thanks to the City of Saskatoon for helping out with the landfill fees. Where an attempt was made to clean up the park truck load by truck load to the landfill, this surely went a lot easier! Thanks to the Loraas truck driver, and we had amazing weather, couldn’t have been a nicer nor more beautiful autumn day. Everyone said they were going to return and enjoy a wonderful walk, knowing what a grand contribution was made by all! Thank you.

Fencing at George Genereux Park

So the fencing is just about completed at George Genereux Park in Saskatoon. When one thinks about how long it takes to fence in a homeowners property, and how long it takes, it is absolutely mind boggling that a quarter section of land is receiving fencing within such a time frame.

The posts started going in the ground on Tues Sept 21, the posts are all completed, and the wire has an amazing start as well. Come out, have a walk in the forest, and be amazed at the difference that the greenspace now has.

Here are some pictures of how the afforestation area at George Genereux park looks now. We will place more tags and reflector tape next week to protect animals.

This is a wonderful way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of #NationalForestWeek, and the 50th anniversary of the afforestation areas!

This fencing went up with advice from the City of Saskatoon and Meewasin, and with the amazing support of the Government of Canada.

So, under the advisement of the City of Saskatoon and Meewasin, George Genereux Park has fencing in the style of the North East Swale, which is wildlife friendly fencing so the animals can hop/fly over top, and sneak underneath. Tagging helps the animals to visually see the fencing if they are running around.

CKQ fencing (CKQ Fence Construction) were the contractors, and as mentioned, if your want an excellent wildlife friendly fencing, this is a great choice for contractors.

National Forest Week brings attention to our forests and trees from coast to coast across Canada. Our forests and trees provide habitats for wildlife, insects, polllinator species, birds and so much more! What is the ‘triple environmental emergency we are facing?

Our native biodiversity needs wild spaces, food and homes such as trees and forests provide in which to thrive. Forests, tree planting, and forest conservation initiatives are nature-based solutions towards climate action. Pollution, pesticides, herbicides are escalating the extinction events. Creating safe, organic forest spaces is a large step to halt and slow down the silent sixth mass extinction event of invertebrates, the planet’s bird food on wings. Ornithologists and botanists have noticed that the songbird, and raptor populations have declined by a staggering 48%. The monitored wildlife populations are reduced by a catastrophic 68%. A loss of forests and habitats have caused over 2/3 of our animal populations to totally disappear.

Richard St. Barbe Baker said it this way, “If a person loses one third of his or her skin, the person will die; if a tree loses a third of its bark, the tree will die, and if the world loses a third of its trees, the world will die.
We live less that five minutes without air and the trees give us air we breathe. We live less than five days without water, and trees are absolutely essential in the water cycle. We live less than five weeks without food, and without the trees we could not grow food.” (Filson, Bruce K. October 7, 1982, Western People, p. 5)

For rare sightings during the City Nature Challenge CNCYXE don’t place your iNat observation on private but do protect your rare sightings with obscured! And do let us know, so that the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County can run a press release!

In Saskatoon and area we are taking part in #CNC2022! Join us between April 29 – May 2 as we take part in this International initiative to collect information about the wildlife flourishing in Saskatoon and area.

Researchers, school groups, citizens and wildlife enthusiasts across the world will be taking part in this race against the clock to put nature on the map, submitting photos and observations of wildlife in their neighbourhoods and greenspaces through the free, easy to use iNaturalist smart phone app.

New finds! Species that haven’t been recorded in particular areas before. Important finds of rare/endangered/threatened species. Observations that have a great story that go along with them. Really cool photos. Fun finds!

As part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean up, Arbor Week, World Environment Day, and International Trails Day please come out and help restore the George Genereux forest to enjoy. It is a unique habitat with a willows ecosystem, amur maples for deep red autumnal walks, and trembling aspen stands in a mixed woodland with spruce and pine. The George Genereux Urban Regional Park is about ½ mile by ½ mile in size 147.8acres – Lots of room to socially distance – located on part of NE 21-36-6 W of the third meridian (west of the SkHwy 7) at GPS 52.1086103,-106.7926227.

This is an initiative of SOS Trees Coalition Inc. Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc., Meewasin, City of Saskatoon, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and Tim Horton’s Pitch In Week.

Directions: Arrive at George Genereux Urban Regional via the Pike Lake Highway, Saskatchewan Highway 7. The greenspace is to the south of Blairmore Shopping malls, and south of the 11th Street compost, take the first right after wetlands and then a quick left.

It is wise to come dressed for the weather – a hat, closed toe footwear, sunscreen, bug spray & water bottle, canvas gloves, masks. We supply refreshments (i.e. water bottles, juice boxes, granola bars). There will be on-site free facemasks, sanitizer, plastic gloves & trash bags.

Today March 21 is a spectacular day! It is the United Nations International Day of Forests!

It is now a year since Saskatoon City Council approved its Green Strategy, pledging to connect, protect and restore our urban green spaces as sustainable habitats for people and other living things.

This is exciting and forward-looking work and, here at Wild about Saskatoon, we have been wondering how things are moving ahead. What has happened in the months since the Strategy was approved? What steps are being taken to move the plan off the page and into the living landscape of this special place that we call home? How can conserving natural assets help us face the challenges of social dislocation, biodiversity loss and climate change?

With these questions in mind, we are hosting our second NatureCityConversation at 7 PM on Wednesday evening, March 31. Please plan to join us for “A City in Harmony with Nature? An Update on Saskatoon’s Green Strategy,” with Jessie Best, Environmental Project Manager, and Katie Burns, Manager of Community Leadership and Program Development, City of Saskatoon, and Andrea Lafond, CEO of the Meewasin Valley Authority. Special guest: spoken-word artist Janelle “ecoarborijanelle” Pewapsconias. There will be opportunities for questions and comments from the audience.

Environmental education has a long lasting legacy. Enjoy the experience of Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, or George Genreux Urban Regional Park. Electricity in the Environment: With a growing population “keeping up with the electrical demand is both challenging and providing some unique opportunities.”

Focused Study: Connecting Societies, Science, Technology and the Natural Prairie Environment in Saskatchewan: A power point to “interactions between societies, technology and the natural environment, focusing on changes to the prairie ecosystem and native plant communities. Conditions necessary for plant growth are also investigated, using selected native plants. Basic plant structure, function and mechanisms of adaptation are reviewed, as well as the fundamental importance of soils for sustaining life.”

Focused Study: Plant reproduction and Native plants of Saskatchewan. “To form an understanding of the continuance of life in nature through a lesson on native plant reproduction, pollination, the reproduction of symbiotic species and the effects of differing types of reproduction methods on populations”

Metis Traditional Foods Learn about traditional foods, the change of seasons and how to make la gaalet (bannock).

Millennium Development Goal #7. Ensure Environmental Sustainability. “Currently North Americans make up 5% of the world’s population, but consume a third of the world’s resources.”

Plant Growth and Changes: To understand the pre-requisites for plant growth how plants develop, and the necessary requirements for germination.

Walking with the Earth Pimohtiwin: A power point to “explore cultural perspectives on sustainability and biodiversity within local ecosystems.” Created to explore” the learning place is somewhere that still has natural plants and animals living in the area.”
