The Philosophy Of Songs for the Birds

"Wild bird, whose warble, liquid sweet,
Rings Eden through the budded quicks,
Oh, tell me where the senses mix,
Oh, tell me where the passions meet,"
Lord Alfred Tennyson

These little bird statues represent the embodiment of place and time, of humanity in the forest, and connecting with nature.

They symbolize the mysterious interconnection between society and nature, people connecting with Mother Earth.

What a beautiful gift for the Afforestation Area. Along with bird feed, and peanuts, users of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, grace the benches near the bird feeding stations with a fitting tribute and honour.

Thank you so much!

The benches are enjoyed by many people, as are the afforestation areas. In gratitude to the City of Saskatoon for the Take It Outside initiative enable the benches and two of the bird stations. Thank you!

And now, wouldst thou, O man, delight the ear With earth’s delicious sounds, or charm the eye With beautiful creations, then pass forth And find them midst those many-colored birds That fill the glowing woods. The richest hues Lie in their splendid plumage, and their tones Are sweeter than the music of the lute.”

Elizabeth and Joseph Grinnell

Robin, Sir Robin, gay-vested knight, Now you have come to us, summer’s in sight; You never dream of the wonders you bring— Visions that follow the flash of your wing. How all the beautiful by and by Around you and after you seems to fly; Sing on, or eat on, as pleases your mind. Well have you earned every morsel you find. “Aye! ha! ha! ha!” whistles Robin. My dear, Let us all take our own choice of good cheer.

Lucy Larcom.

Winter Wonderland

  1. While walking along the trails with your COVID bubble, the mushrooms and flowers are down below under the snow…so….take photos of as many different kinds of trees as you can find in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, the forest is an amazing Winter Wonderland! Using iNaturalist will help with the identification of the tree!
  2. Start out by downloading the iNaturalist app
On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open the App Store
On your android phone or tablet, open Google Play
Browse or search for iNaturalist and download.
  3. Check out our way cool iNaturalist.pdf pamphlet!
  4. In your iNaturalist tree observation include the full photo of the tree, the tree bark and the end of a branch or a twig to help with identification! If it is an evergreen make a note if the needle rolls easily between two finger and is round, or if when rolled the needle feels square.
  5. We would be happy to get you acquainted with iNaturalist and how fun it is to use or if you having problems using iNaturalist, just Email friendsafforestation@gmail.com and we can certainly arrange a zoom meeting with you about using iNaturalist!
  6. Let us know about your tree photos through email, to be entered into the draw for a prize in the Winter Staycation Take It Outside Challenges!!!

The TikTok Challenge

The weather is predicted to be fantastic starting February 19…so…come on out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and film a TikTok. This is an absolutely fantastic way to be entered into the prize draw for the Winter Staycation Take It Outside Challenges! Send a photo of your TikTok page which you filmed out in the afforestation area! How amazing is that?

“Who Let The Dogs Out?” is one possible sound track which could accompany off leash dog walkers who are making use of the South West Off Leash Recreation Area! What have you got?

If you are walking in the forest, a possible sound track would be…”These boots are made for walking!” What will you come up with?

What would be a great tune for cross-country skiing, bicycling, or snowshowing?

Challenges and Prizes

Did the “Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc“, non profit environmental charity mention that there are challenges and an opportunity to be eligible to win prizes? Tomorrow is Monday February 15, family day in Saskatchewan.

Well, during COVID-19 there are Public Health Organisation regulations to not arrange an event with a date and a time. So, our Take It Outside Winter Staycation programming has some amazing challenges to promote being “Outside Safely.”

Our challenges are set up for your family or your personal COVID bubble to come out to the 326 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and have a lot of fun!

With family day coming up, try this activity. At home place a couple of drops of food colouring in a balloon you have freshly removed from a bag of balloons. Then take the balloon and enclose the mouth of the balloon around the water tap, and fill the balloon up. Like making a coloured water balloon.

Make a few of these and put them outside to freeze. Place them in your vehicle and come on out to the afforestation area. When you arrive you can walk your dog in the South West off leash recreation area, and place your creations (remove the rubber balloon, and just leave the coloured ice) alongside the dog park fence or up on the snow piles created by the bulldozers this year! What a great way to cheer up the edges of the forest pathways!

They will even make superlative sun catchers for everyone to enjoy. Take a picture of your snow globes which you have placed in the afforestation area, and send the email in to friendsafforestation@gmail.com to be entered into the prize draw. Yay!

“The future of the planet concerns all of us, and all of us should do what we can to protect it. ” Wangari Maathai.

“The science of forestry arose from the recognition of a universal need. It embodies the spirit of service to mankind in attempting to provide a means of supplying forever a necessity of life and, in addition, ministering to man’s aesthetic tastes and recreational interests. Besides, the spiritual side of human nature needs the refreshing inspiration which comes from trees and woodlands. If a nations saves its trees, the trees will save the nation. And nations as well as tribes may be brought together in this great movement, based on the ideal of beautifying the world by the cultivation of one of God’s loveliest creatures – the tree.” ~ Richard St. Barbe Baker.

“It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.”

— Robert Louis Stevenson

Animal Track Detective

Fresh snow! Going out in the winter time when there is freshly fallen snow on the ground is an amazing experience. A heavy snowfall covers everthing in a thick blanket of white. In the kingdoms of Scotland and England, this may be called an “onding.” As compared to a light snow, which may be referred to as a “skift” of snow.

Now then, if you happen to come out to the afforestation areas first thing after a blizzard when the ground is covered in a delightful onding of snow, then keep your eyes peeled. The marvels of prints in the snow are a true source of wonder.

Large tracks, small claws, tails, all make their unique imprint into the freshly fallen snow.

Mysteries of psithurism

Today there is a new word for you! In the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, it may be a better autumnal word. However, today, this marvellous winter day, this word is shared especially for you.

From The Red Forest the word is psithurism.

Psithurism!

Have you ever heard of psithurism before? Well perhaps not the word, but, and however, you probably did enjoy sitting in a forest listening and marvelling at the wind rustling through the leaves. And it is a glorious feeling to hear the wind moving through the branches of the trees. That experience is psithurism.

So next time you marvel at the shimmer of the trembling aspen leaves when the slightest breeze rustles those amazing leafy “coins” of the “money tree,” think of psithurism. As you walk through the forest in the winter and a silverberry or snowberry bush still remains with leaves, remember psithurism and rejoice.

So today, the challenge is passive and quiet. The challenge is to set yourself still and quiet in the forest, and experience psithurism. So please do Take It Outside, and celebrate this WinterCity YXE opportunity to have a Winter Staycation in Saskatoon.

“To be standing together in a frosty field, looking up into the sky, marvelling at birds and revelling in the natural world around us, was a simple miracle. And I wondered why we were so rarely able to appreciate it.”

Lynn Thomson

-Anne Lamott
