Thank you to SaskPower

Our sincere gratitude is extended to SaskPower for their generous support of the City Nature Challenge : 2022 Saskatoon, SK : Défi nature urbaine (CNC YXE DNU). This event for the City of Saskatoon will take place April 29 to May 2. With the contribution from SaskPower people from Saskatoon and area can connect with nature, and have a excellent activity to take part in during these weird and uncertain times. The CNC YXE DNU can take place if there are protocols allowed for groups outdoors, or for bubbles with social distancing measures in place. The support from SaskPower means that citizen scientists can help track endangered species, monitor the expansion of wildlife territory, discover changes in habitat. All these data collections are vitally important in this era of climate change. SaskPower Trees and Power Line Safety

Its a way to be fit and active, connect with the outdoors, and inspire people to become aware of the natural world around them in a way that matters – helping scientists around the world.

Thank you.

9 Powerful Tips To Help You on #givingtuesday

We are coming up on #GivingTuesday on November 30, 2021.

Donations help so much, by making a donation on Giving Tuesday the funds go towards the conservation of the afforestation area as trees are the largest and cheapest method of removing CO2 from the atmosphere mitigating climate change. Forests clean our air, our water, and regulate our climate. Forests help to manage and alleviate flooding.

Your donation goes towards assisting  the installation of interpretive signs and the creation of an afforestation area outdoor classroom for children across the City of Saskatoon.

Did you know? You can receive as much as 53% back through charity tax deductions. Receipts can be issued by the non-profit charity Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. does for your donation.

Connecting on #Giving Tuesday with a donation or by contacting Donate A Car Canada for the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. helps to install wildlife friendly fence can be installed. This allows the deer fawns and moose calves to pass through without getting caught in the fence, or without being left behind.

“Think of giving not only as a duty but as a privilege.”

John Rockefeller

Your reach out for The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. when you donate on #GivingTuesday, or contact Donate A Care Canada goes towards the installation of a garbage receptacle to protect the semi- wilderness habitat without pollution in the environment. This installation will protect the natural areas at this amazing habitat.

YouTube Video

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to contact Donate A Car Canada or donate via Canada Helps and help habitat for bees and other pollinators which help keep our planet and our city green. They are facing habitat loss, and what a better place than the afforestation areas to protect their habitat where herbicides and pesticides are not in use.

Your donation also helps provide the means for classrooms of children, or youth groups to come out to the afforestation areas by bus for inquiry-learning on-site in these naturalized afforestation areas.

I absolutely believe in the power of tithing. My own experience is that the more I give away, the more that comes back. That is the way life works

Ken Blanchard

What about the contribution your donation makes towards installation of a metal park identification sign and mitigate illegal motorized vehicle trespass and illegal trash dumping.

Your contribution helps to create and maintain a GPS place-based learning Prairie Forest app to take the afforestation areas online, and share the community stories of legends, and memories.

Reaching  out to Donate A Car Canada or by making a donation for #GivingTuesday in support of the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. does help to provide groups of volunteers with gloves and trash bags to conduct clean ups. Community volunteer clean ups go a long way to protect the woodlands, grasslands and wetlands.

A gift like these make a real difference. Make an impact with your gift, and help make the world a better place.

Another species at risk

Well, the City of Saskatoon and Meewasin Valley Authority were right. Canvassing the afforestation areas does show that these semi-wilderness areas do provide habitats conducive to flora and fauna including species at risk. The count is up to around twenty species at risk at the current moment. Thank you to everyone using iNaturalist and helping to document the species in the afforestation areas.

There is a new species at risk are the Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura spotted out at the afforestation areas.

There is actually a Turkey Vulture Tracking Program going on. Dr Stuart Housten and Martin Stoffel have been the leaders in the Saskatchewan research on these birds. Here is an article written abut Tracking Saskatchewan Nestling Turkey Vultures by Housten before his passing.

A 326-acre afforestation area, planted as a man-made forest on the prairies, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada was named after Richard St Barbe Baker, aka Man of the Trees. Celebrate this Jubilee celebration 50 years after he received his honorary doctorate at the University of Saskatchewan.
The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas have commissioned a documentary about this remarkable man with historical footage, arguably the first global conservationist, and his legacy here in our city. It is based on interviews with several people who knew St Barbe Baker.
The program, will also have greetings from conservationists from Australia, Switzerland, Scotland, Britain and the USA who were inspired by St Barbe and who became conservation leaders in their own right.

Ecosystem wholesale destruction

November 6 is the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. What a day to remember!

In the last two years of World War I over half of the productive forests in Britain were lost to the war effort. They were needed for building up the trenches, building up barbed wire fencing, providing a wood sidewalk during years of constant rain.

Whatever trees were not chopped down for the war effort, were brought down for lighting and heating houses domestically in Britain.

There was not much difference between the clear-cut forests and the ensuing fire devastation of the lands of Britain, and the flattened landscapes of France in the theatre of war. Where did the forests go for places of spiritual, mental and psychological refuge? They were gone.

Trenches and aerodromes, forests fell and continued to fall during the First World War. “By the end of the First World War, it is estimated that 85,000 tonnes of round timber, 260 million board feet of lumber and over 200,000 tons of fuel and slabs were harvested by the Forestry Corps.”source

“During the month of October 1918 alone, over 53 million board feet was cut by the forestry troops.”source

“The same demand for wood arose during the Second World War”source

It was the destruction of the ecosystem, without a doubt.source

Now, what does the have to do with Richard St. Barbe Baker? Well Rudy Haase, an environmentalist forming the Friends of Nature, in 1960, joined the campaign to reforest Sahara desert. “In 8 years the Sahara could be a green homeland for millions of people if a force equal to standing armies of the world started work. A 50, 000 square mile subterranean lake makes St. Barbe Baker’s grand plan possible.”source

“Baker’s visions of a green peace where armies can be reorganized to undertake tasks such as turning deserts into forests have inspired millions.”source

So, this peaceful use of the armies of the world for desertification purposes was a vision of Richard St. Barbe Baker’s.

We are letting you know about a film and film launch program that includes global conservationists who knew Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889-1982) aka  Baba Wya Miti Loving Father of Trees, who are part of a virtual film on Saturday, November 6, 1:00 pm SK time (CT)
