Environmental protection and conservation

The world is rapidly changing, and so is the way we think about our environment. Traditional ecological ways of knowing are beginning to gain prominence in the debate on how to best protect and nurture our planet. These ancient practices, passed down from generations of people living in harmony with their surroundings, offer us a valuable insight into how we can best take care of our environment.

Afforestation naturalized green spaces is one of the most important ways of utilizing Traditional ecological ways of knowing for environmental conservation and protection in an city park space. Through the afforestation process, native species of trees and plants are planted in areas that have been deforested or otherwise damaged by humans. As these ecosystems grow, they provide a range of benefits to local wildlife and humans alike, such as improved air and water quality, increased carbon storage, and reduced soil erosion.

These practices provide us with an understanding of how to sustainably use and manage our environment, ensuring that it remains healthy for generations to come. By utilizing these methods, we can promote healthy ecosystems, while also providing an opportunity for people to learn from the wisdom of the past.

Traditional ecological ways of knowing is also a powerful tool for environmental education. By introducing these ancient practices and philosophies to children, we can help foster a deeper understanding of our environment and the importance of preserving it and being stewards for species at risk. By engaging with the land and its inhabitants, we can help to create a stronger sense of connection and stewardship towards the natural world.

As the world continues to change and our understanding of the environment shifts, it’s important to remember the valuable lessons that can be learned from traditional ecological ways of knowing. Through the use of afforestation and other traditional practices, we can help to restore our ecosystems, while also gaining a deeper understanding of how to best take care of our planet.

Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide App Editor/Writer stage one contract position. The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong background in editing and a passion for preserving the cultural and environmental heritage of Saskatchewan’s prairie forests. They will be familiar with the Saskatchewan curriculum foundations and have an understanding of the interpretive potential of the afforestation areas ecology and the heritage potential of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park from an Indigenous and/or Métis perspective. You will also be responsible for incorporating Saskatchewan curriculum foundations into the app.

Ethnobotany park interpretation

In recent years, ethnobotany parks have become increasingly popular as a way to explore the relationship between plants, people and culture. At ethnobotany parks, visitors can explore the traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples, learn about the traditional uses of plants and explore the connection between plants and culture.

The concept of ethnobotany park interpretation is based on the idea that visitors can learn about the environment and Indigenous cultures in a respectful and meaningful way. This type of interpretation allows for a deeper understanding of the connection between plants, people and culture, and provides a unique opportunity for reconciliation between cultures in the forest.

Ethnobotany park interpretation is a powerful and meaningful way to connect people with nature. Through interactive activities such as guided walks, talks, and demonstrations, visitors can learn about the traditional cultures of Indigenous peoples and the traditional uses of plants. The Sacredness of Water

The Sacredness of Water and Indigenous People’s Relationship with Nature

Water has long been seen as a source of spiritual and physical nourishment, and for Indigenous people, this has become an essential part of their heritage, connection to the land, and sense of identity. Water is seen as a symbol of life, as it is necessary for survival, and is an integral part of many Indigenous ceremonies and rituals.

The West Swale wetlands, in particular Chappell Marsh, has been an important location for many Indigenous people. It is a place of great spiritual significance, and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. It is also a popular tourist destination, and a place where local communities come to enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility of the area.

However, this relationship between Indigenous people and the land has been threatened by the human dimensions of water issues. Water contamination, overuse, and pollution have put a strain on the health of the wetlands and its inhabitants. Furthermore, the development of the wetlands for tourist and recreational activities has caused further disruption to the natural environment.

The human dimensions of water issues are not limited to the West Swale wetlands. Across Canada, Indigenous people are struggling to protect their sacred water sources from industrial and agricultural pollution, as well as residential development. This has had a devastating impact on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous people, and has caused a disconnection from the land that has been a part of their culture for centuries.

We must recognize the need for sustainable water management practices and the need to protect and conserve water sources, both in the West Swale wetlands and across Canada. We must also respect the spiritual significance of water for Indigenous people, and ensure that their connection to the land is preserved and celebrated. Only then can we begin to restore the balance between humans and nature.

Innovative App Editor – Writer for Cultural & Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide. The ideal candidate for this position will have a deep understanding of Indigenous perspectives and cultures, as well as a passion for the environment and its protection. Experience in developing interpretive heritage stories and knowledge of life on land is a must. No technical coding required. Enriching Ecological Knowledge

As the world continues to face environmental challenges, the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) provides an important opportunity to restore and protect our planet. One key element of this effort is the inclusion of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) in virtual smartphone applications.

TEK is a culturally based body of knowledge and practices developed through generations of observation and experience within a particular region and ecosystem. It encompasses a range of information including traditional uses of plants, the protection of species at risk, the management of invasive species, and the impact of invasives.

By incorporating TEK into virtual smartphone applications, users of the app can gain a better understanding of the natural environment and how to protect and enhance it. This knowledge can be applied to afforestation projects that help to restore ecosystems. Users can learn about the different species of plants found in the area, their traditional and medicinal uses, and how to protect them from becoming extinct. Additionally, users can learn how to identify and manage invasive species and reduce the impact of their spread.

Involving users in the restoration of ecosystems through virtual applications is a powerful way to increase environmental awareness and create a sense of responsibility. By providing access to TEK and the ability to apply it, virtual apps can empower users to become more active in the protection of the environment.

Ultimately, the inclusion of TEK in virtual apps can have a positive impact on the success of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. As the world continues to evolve, technology has opened up new avenues for interpreting and understanding the past. A new virtual smartphone app has been developed with the goal of illuminating the story of the West Swale and the Yorath Island Glacial Spillway and the Paleoindian lifestyle and Ice Age Mammals, utilizing both archaeological and geological concepts and theories.

The app begins by providing an overview of the Paleoindian lifestyle, examining how early inhabitants of the area adapted to survive in their environment. Through a combination of interactive maps and 3D models, users can explore the landscape of the West Swale and Yorath Island Glacial Spillway, discovering how the environment shaped the lives of the Paleoindians. The app also features a comprehensive guide to the animals of the Ice Age, from mammoths to saber-toothed cats and everything in between.

In addition to these historical elements, the app also provides users with an understanding of the geological and environmental changes that have taken place in the area over time. By combining geological data with archaeological evidence, the app paints a picture of how the environment has evolved over the years. This includes a look at the effects of glacial and post-glacial events, as well as the impact of human activity on the area.

Finally, the app offers a comprehensive look at the impact of climate change on the environment, showcasing how the area has been affected by rising sea levels and changing temperatures. Through interactive maps and visuals, users can get a sense of the current state of the West Swale and Yorath Island Glacial Spillway, and how the environment is being impacted by human activity.

By combining archaeological, geological, and environmental information, this virtual app is a comprehensive tool for understanding the history of the West Swale and the Yorath Island Glacial Spillway. By providing users with an interactive look at the area’s past and present, the app aims to provide a better understanding of the environment and the impact of human activity on it.

Responsibilities for the virtual app editor/writer position include:

Editing and running reconciliation, traditional ecological ways of knowing fact checks for The GPS interpretive app existing content
Developing content for the app that is both accurate and engaging
Ensuring accuracy in all content related to traditional ecological ways of knowing
Collaborating with the app developers and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy of the app

Qualifications for this position include:

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, or a related field
Strong writing skills, with experience in cultural and environmental heritage writing
Understanding of reconciliation and traditional ecological ways of knowing
Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Sharing knowledge

The Prairie Forest Guide app is an incredible resource for sharing knowledge about the ancient history of the Yorath Island Glacial Spillway, now known as the West Swale. By utilizing archaeological, geological, and ecological concepts and theories, the app offers an interactive, detailed interpretation of the area’s past.

The Yorath Island Glacial Spillway was formed by the retreat of the last ice age glaciers, and it is estimated to have been in existence for more than 10,000 years. The app explains how the spillway changed over time and how its features formed, such as the intermittent wetland, the meandering channel, and the sands and gravels that fill the area.

Not only does the app provide a comprehensive overview of the geology and archaeology of the Yorath Island Glacial Spillway, it also tells the story of how the glacial spillway affected the lifestyle of the Paleoindian people who lived in the area. Through the app, users are able to learn about the tools and technology the Paleoindians developed to live in the area and how their lifestyle and activities changed due to the glacial spillway.

The app also offers a detailed look at the life of the Ice Age mammals that resided in the area. Through the app, users are able to learn about the different species of animals that lived in the area, as well as the changes in their behavior and habitat due to the glacial spillway.

The Prairie Forest Guide app is an invaluable resource for understanding the ancient history and geology of the Yorath Island Glacial Spillway. By utilizing archaeological, geological, and ecological concepts and theories, the app offers users an interactive and detailed journey through the area’s past. Through its interactive interpretation, the app provides a comprehensive look at the glacial spillway’s effects on the Paleoindian lifestyle and Ice Age mammals, offering a unique and insightful glimpse into the area’s history.

George Genereux Tour

So, as has been posted the fencing is starting to come together at the speed of light 😉 So, today, we had a wonderful gentleman named Preston who presided over the ribbon cutting ceremony at George Genereux Park.

The tour went through 3 or 4 various changing ecosystems, as a circle was made in George Genereux Park. Actually it was nice to see the ecotone, where an ecotone is where more than on ecosystem meet with each other. So the drought resistant, hardy tree plantings celebrating their 50th anniversary were meeting with the trembling aspen bluffs with buffaloberry, red-osier dogwood and snow berry and so on as native species. A number of heritage points were covered including the West Swale, some of the flora and fauna of the afforestation areas, the early afforestation areas history under the Green Survival Progam, and the two films about the afforestation areas and the pfg.friendsareas.ca app, and the planned updates to the app from Gabriel Dumont Institute and CWF Youth group.

So, a sampling of imagery is shown here, including the inaugural ribbon cutting for George Genereux Park, Preston and the new fence which is nearing completion! Thank you to everyone who came out to the park. We hope you enjoy your next visit, and some exciting places to explore till you find your favourite place in the forest!

This is a wonderful way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of #NationalForestWeek, and the 50th anniversary of the afforestation areas!

Clean UP Sat Sept 24

Thank you is extended to all the clean up volunteers all those from the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, from SOS Trees, from Saskatoon Search and Rescue, from the members of the general public who heard about the afforestation areas or who are users of the afforestation areas.

It is true what is said that many hands make light work. The clean up began at 9:30, and before the estimated end time of 1:30 the very large Loraas dumpster was filled to the top, and another one was about 3/4 full! It is hard to believe.

But it was so rewarding to know that the fencing will go up around the greenspace which no longer has trash in it, so it will be safe for park users of all ages. It will be nice to enjoy both Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, and George Genereux realizing that they are a great deal safer, now that the garbage is cleared out, and the fencing is going up to mitigate more continual trash dumping!!! Wow!

So again. Thanks to the volunteers. Thanks to Regan Olson, environmental protection officer at the City of Saskatoon. Thanks to the City of Saskatoon for helping out with the landfill fees. Where an attempt was made to clean up the park truck load by truck load to the landfill, this surely went a lot easier! Thanks to the Loraas truck driver, and we had amazing weather, couldn’t have been a nicer nor more beautiful autumn day. Everyone said they were going to return and enjoy a wonderful walk, knowing what a grand contribution was made by all! Thank you.

In the days leading up to #NationalForestWeek

 Let people know about a forest you like to visit

 Share the location of a unique tree

 Tell a story about your favourite native tree

 Create a post on social media letting everyone know what event you have to offer about your favourite tree or forest

 Get together with other environmental groups to promote your forest or tree places by a networking event

There is no mood or passion that the forest cannot give us, and those of us who have discovered her secret can settle beforehand what our experiences are going to be. We can choose our day and select our hour. And lo! the dawn finds us in the obscure wood. Together witnessing the film expose the afforestation secrets, we pass through into the realm of legend. With pity or with joy, the secrets revealed, behold the stories and tales of another world, another time. Let us at least suppose so for the moment—that at the film -we settle down to discovering the real intention and the stories of the afforestation areas. Those stories which etch and mould the form of the afforestation areas.
