Roses in appreciation of Volunteers supporters and sponsors of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area Take It Outside Wintery Staycation, Saskatoon, SK, CA
During COVID many people and businesses have faced weird and tough times. That has not stopped Saskatoon businesses from supporting non-profit charities. The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. wish to acknowledge the support of the following businesses. We are truly grateful. Thank you for receiving and sharing information about the Take It Outside Winter Staycation Some businesses have shared them in the coffee room with their staff, and others have placed posters up, shared with staff and the general public.
Remember you can download the poster and brochure here!
The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. (Friends) is focused on the protection and enhancement of the Richard St Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (RSBBAA) and the adjacent George Genereux Urban Regional Park (GGURP). We aim to increase public awareness about these large naturalized heritage areas, created by tree planting, and involve the community in both using and taking care of them. We use our extensive research on the geological, ecological and cultural history of these protected areas of the West Swale to contribute to Saskatoon’s green infrastructure and heritage planning. We are developing place-based learning opportunities in the afforestation areas alongside community and school groups, and in cooperation with civic authorities. Having organized several successful community-based clean-ups of the areas we are actively working to prevent further misuse by placing signage and barriers to illegal entry. Our general educational activities align with and enhance the City’s environmental goals.
If you would like more information about the non profit environmental charity Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc, The Take It Outside Winter Staycation programme, or wish to be a supporter, please email friendsafforestation@gmail.com We look forward to hearing from you.
Protecting the environment, taking action on climate change, conservation and restoration for species at risk, all while enjoying nature it doesn’t get better than this! Take part in the launch of “Our Forest Returns Saskatoon” – a campaign to kickstart the amazing wonders of winter in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and out at George Genereux Urban Regional Park. YouTube video
Did you know that just $100 towards the conservation of the afforestation areas is an amazing way to take action on climate change as trees are the largest and cheapest method of removing CO2 from the atmosphere mitigating climate change. Forests clean our air, our water, and regulate our climate. Forests help to manage and alleviate flooding.
Did you know that just $90 does greatly assist in the installation of interpretive signs and the creation of an afforestation area outdoor classroom for children across the City of Saskatoon.
Did you know that just $75 would go towards 125m of wildlife friendly fence can be installed. This allows the deer fawns and moose calves to pass through without getting caught in the fence, or without being left behind.
Did you know that just $60 towards the installation of a garbage receptacle would greatly protect the semi- wilderness habitat without pollution in the environment. This installation will protect the natural areas at this amazing habitat.
Did you know that just $50 towards the protection of habitat for bees and other pollinators which help keep our planet and our city green. They are facing habitat loss, and what a better place than the afforestation areas to protect their habitat where herbicides and pesticides are not in use.
Did you know that just $40 would support the installation of a park identification sign to mitigate illegal motorized vehicle trespass and illegal trash dumping.
Did you know that just sponsoring a tree with $25 a month would enable that the proper Afforestation Area protections are in place. Receive information about your tree. This is a gift that keeps on giving, and you can be a part of the effort to protect these trees in perpetuity.
Did you know that just $20 would be a benefit for providing groups of volunteers with facemasks, gloves and trash bags to conduct clean ups. Community volunteer clean ups go a long way to protect the woodlands, grasslands and wetlands.
A gift like these make a real difference. Make an impact with your gift, and help make the world a better place. Show some love on #GivingTuesday. Thanks to your awesome support, trees will continue to do what they do best, sequester carbon, and give oxyen and mitigate climate change so vitally important during this era of warmer, wetter and wilder weather. How can you help?
What is a Saskatoon Wild Forest Angel or steward of the afforestation areas for the Our Forest Returns Saskatoon campaign? How does becoming a steward or guardian make a difference for nature in the City of Saskatoon afforestation areas?
Thank you kindly to all the amazing folks who nominated the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas! You were amazing! (Important update and Online Help needed!) Thank you also to everyone who took the time today and in the past few weeks to make a donation for #GivingTuesdayCA. Wow! That is ever so wonderful, and does surely make a huge difference. The afforestation area green infrastructure provides a wide array of benefits to people and wildlife, and it is the users of the greenspace who know how absolutely awesome the afforestation areas are, and it is good to hear from all of you indeed!

“The science of forestry arose from the recognition of a universal need. It embodies the spirit of service to mankind in attempting to provide a means of supplying forever a necessity of life and, in addition, ministering to man’s aesthetic tastes and recreational interests. Besides, the spiritual side of human nature needs the refreshing inspiration which comes from trees and woodlands. If a nations saves its trees, the trees will save the nation. And nations as well as tribes may be brought together in this great movement, based on the ideal of beautifying the world by the cultivation of one of God’s loveliest creatures – the tree.” ~ Richard St. Barbe Baker.
The non profit charity, Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. take this opportunity to profer a huge thank you, publicly, to the City of Saskatoon and the Meewasin for facilitating the clean up effort out at the afforestation areas! The results made our green space parks cleaner, more inviting and and much more environmentally friendly for everyone.
The Clean Green Community Scene is a community effort facilitated by Regan Olson, Environmental Protection Officer for orchestrating the large Loraas dumpster which were filled cleanup bags, and assorted large items of trash, taken to the dump several times throughout the day. The parks could not become much safer green spaces without the attentions and support provided by the city departments, and those working at Land Branch and the landfill to facilitate the accomplishments of the two autumn days.
Thank you also to the large truck and trailer provided by Meewasin, and also to the Meewasin technicians and their partners for the amazing help assisting at the clean up. The clean up kg totals from Oct 3 and Sept 19 do not reflect the two large loads taken to the dump in the Meewasin large truck and on their trailer.
How can we ever indeed, say that we appreciate the dedication shown by the various departments at the city working alongside Regan Olson, as well as those working hard at the Meewasin. These two autumn days are a testament to the accomplishment by the City of Saskatoon and by the Meewasin Conservation Authority in their commitment for the betterment of the greenspaces and ultimately the urban regional parks are a great deal safer. It is amazing what can be accomplished together. We also wish to acknowledge all the folks who came out on Sept 19 and Oct 3 for the afforestation area clean ups.

A note from the City of Saskatoon environmental protection officer, Regan Olson in regards to the October 3 clean up.
As part of the 2020 fall community clean ups this year, we assisted in the further clean-up of both the Richard-St-Barb-Baker-Afforestation-Area and the George Genereux Urban Park on the South West boundaries of the City of Saskatoon. This took place on Saturday Oct 3rd 2020.
Here are the results of the clean-up effort that are broken up in into the two areas that were dealt with:
Richard-St-Barb-Baker-Afforestation-Area (RSBBAA)
This clean up took place all morning here and the 32 cubic yard roll-off waste bin was emptied twice with waste
The total amount of waste removed from the Richard-St-Barb-Baker-Afforestation-Area on Saturday was 3,410kg’s
A large group of volunteers from both the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas and the Fatlanders Fat Tire Brigade were on hand with many trucks to help facilitate an efficient nearly total clean-up of this area. You would not recognize this area from how it looked only a few years ago thanks to the many stakeholders here and the ongoing work being done towards its betterment!
Other items of note:
– 5 tires were taken from here and recycled at A-1 Tire
– A large portion of an electrical line connection post that was mainly metal was hauled to the City landfill so that the metal could be recycled.
While not every piece of waste was removed from this site, the vast majority of the illegally dumped waste was cleaned up and removed from this location.
George Genereux Urban Regional Park
Further to the initial clean up that took place here a couple of weeks ago, we ran out of time to get some of the waste here. Therefore, since we were nearby at the RSBBA we simply moved the bins over here for the afternoon and worked on getting any other waste and materials that we could remove from this heavily treed area. A truck & crew from the Meewasin valley Authority assisted us and about 4 other volunteers from the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Area group helped clean up a lot of the remaining accessible waste.
We were also able to remove a truck load of metal that was taken to the landfill at the end of the day to be recycled.
This clean up took place all afternoon here and the 32 cubic yard roll-off waste bin was emptied twice with waste as well.
The total amount of waste removed from the George Genereux Urban Park on Saturday was 2,660kg’s
The load of metal that was diverted from the landfill & will be recycled was 270 kg’s
Other items of note:
– 29 tires were taken from here and recycled at A-1 Tire
– Approximately 7 litres of used motor oil was found and properly disposed of at the landfill’s oil recovery centre
– a large quantity of used needles were collected & properly disposed
As stated in the previous report on the George Genereux Urban Park, a lot of the accessible waste was removed but a substantial amount remains. Most of this material will require equipment to remove and the resources of other City Departments & Stakeholders. When the time comes, please reach out to us on this matter as we can help assist in the facilitation.
I would like to thank all of those that helped out that day!! Please pass this along to anyone who I may have forgotten or who may find this information valuable.
Pictures of this event and of those involved are attached
Thanks

Alongside the thank you extended by Regan Olson from the City of Saskatoon, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. (FSAA) wish to thank everyone who came out on October 3 for the cleanup. It was in 2016 when the Fatlanders Fat Tire Brigade (FFTB) worked alongside and as part of the Stewards and Stakeholders of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. With the new incorporation of the FSAA under the new name, there is no longer a group called the Stewards and Stakeholders of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area it was good to work with the FFTB who have also since incorporated. The afforestation areas are amazing greenspaces within the City of Saskatoon to be protected, and enjoyed.

We wish to give a heartfelt round of thank you to everyone, and all those from around Saskatoon who cleaned up the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area [west side] and all those people who helped with the clean up at George Genereux Urban Regional Park on Saturday October 3. An amazing job was done at both urban regional parks in the City of Saskatoon making them a great deal safer and much more enjoyable as we admire the amazing autumn colours of the forest. This is indeed a city we can be proud of! Clean ups are instantaneous ways of creating a visible and tangible difference in the protection of our city’s environment.
The first Monday of October, Monday October 5 is World Habitat Day, and truly, what an amazing difference to the habitat of the semi-wilderness areas out at George Genereux Urban Regional park and at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area! Thank you kindly again for everyone who came out!
Thanks kindly to Shell Station at 11th Street and Dawes Avenue, Petro Canada on 11th Street and Witney Avenue, Boston Pizza Blairmore, Poor Boys Gas and Food Bar 11th Street and Sk Hwy 7 and Canadian Tire Confederation. These corporations indeed helped with the clean up of October 3, 2020 at George Genereux Urban Regional Park.
Additionally the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc., City of Saskatoon, Meewasin Valley Authority, Fatlanders Fatbike Brigade Inc. , residents from the City of Saskatoon all showed up alongside a journalist who all took part in the clean up occurring on October 3, 2020.
Please be aware that the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux have some magnificent and beautiful elm trees. Please follow guidelines for pruning, and please dispose of any elm leaves and branches in bags for the landfill. Thanks very much

All of us here at the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. want to thank you for the arranging the large dumpsters placed at George Genereux Urban Regional Park for the Clean Green Community Scene clean up on Saturday September 19.
The Clean Green Community Scene followed special precautions, and had some tremendous results! It is truly a continual community effort to keep our urban regional parks in the south west of the City of Saskatoon clean and beautiful. With you help, this is an area we can be proud of.
It was truly an unparalleled success. Thank you kindly.
