Arbor Week, a time to recognize the importance and values of trees.  Public awareness of our native indigenous trees is of great import during this week, as is taking the time to take action on climate change and plant a few trees.

An amazing way to identify trees is via LeafSnap or through iNaturalist.  These are two great “pocket guides” on your smart phone to use in the field.  As you walkabout Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area or George Genereux Urban Regional Park, take a picture with your smart phone using one of these two apps, and the app will bring forward suggestions just for you.  As a matter of fact, there is a great Eco-Quest being undertaken right now, a great arbor week activity which can be undertaken while social distancing.

“Who plants a tree loves others than himself” Richard St. Barbe Baker. For the love of trees.

Sir George William Ross adapted the Arbor Day Manual with tree planting songs for school children.  The classroom curriculum from Patriot Recitations and Arbor Day Exercises adopted poems for the children to recite for each tree species chosen to be planted on Arbor Day.  Try to cultivate Joy and Wonder.  For instance, the pupil for his recitation may say;” I love the pine.  tt stands up so straight and tall, that it looks like a king among trees.  I have two verses to the pine by James Russell Lowell:

“‘Thou alone know’se the splendor of winter
‘Mid thy snow-silvered, hushed precipices,
Hearing crags of green ice grown and splinter,
And then plunge down the muffled abysses,
In the Quiet of midnight.

What was Richard St. Barbe Baker’s mission, that he imparted to the Watu Wa Miti, the very first forest scouts or forest guides?  To protect the native forest, plant ten native trees each year, and take care of trees everywhere.

Songs to Enchant the Forest and Soul

It was fitting and magical that the afforestation area with the namesake Richard St. Barbe Baker, was truly blessed with the repertoire of the Sacred Web Singers SWS singing tree songs in the forest. The Sacred Web Singers sing in the style of Carolyn McDade. The lyrics pay tribute to Gaia, and the verses adapted to the afforestation allowing the pure and encompassing spirit of the moment to resonate

The song Drift like a breath and learn your way down through the trees captured the essential elements of the forest. Imagine sitting within the canopy of the forest, hearing the breeze tickle the Trembling Aspen leaves, smelling the fresh woodland Rose bloom, listening to We of Earth^{You Tube} or You Tube caressing the branches by the singing circle^{You Tube} as the Black Capped Chickadees kept time. The melody, O Beautiful Gaia ~ Love Songs to Earth truly captured the essence of St. Barbe Baker’s mystical experience.

What was Richard St. Barbe Baker’s mission, that he imparted to the Watu Wa Miti, the very first forest scouts or forest guides?  To protect the native forest, plant ten native trees each year, and take care of trees everywhere.
