We all know that getting outside and connecting with nature is essential for our mental and physical health and wellbeing. But when the winter months arrive, it can seem like a daunting task to get out in the cold and explore the outdoors. However, a wintertime nature escape can be just as magical and therapeutic as any summer adventure.

Exploring the forest during winter can bring unique opportunities to connect with nature. The snow-covered trees and the crisp air can provide a peaceful atmosphere for reflection and relaxation. The decrease of life in the winter months also means that the sounds of nature are amplified, allowing us to take in the subtle tones of the forest.

The frigid temperatures of winter can also bring unexpected surprises. If you’re lucky, you could stumble across a group of animals migrating to warmer climates, or a herd of animals gathering in an area to keep warm. Taking a walk in the forest during winter can be an opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitats.

Spending time in nature during the winter months can also provide a number of health benefits. Studies have shown that exposure to nature can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while also improving overall physical health. Taking a walk in the woods can also help to boost your immune system and help you to fight illnesses.

But it’s important to be prepared before heading out in the cold. Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather, and to bring food, water, and a map if you plan to explore for a long period of time.

So don’t be afraid to get out and explore the forest during winter. You’ll be rewarded with a peaceful, tranquil environment and the chance to connect with nature in a way you’d never have imagined. Our International Day of Action for Rivers challenge has been added to the Global Map The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. challenge is very proud to take action for rivers and to be added to the International River org global map

Please will you sign the Universal Declaration for the Rights of Rivers here? The InternationalRivers.org global movement is becoming the backbone of efforts to protect rivers worldwide!

This challenge throws down a gauntlet for you to overcome! It is without a doubt a formidable task! March 14 is International Day to Take Action For Rivers. With a theme, the Rights of Rivers, can you imagine now what the challenge is set before you?

For our Winter Staycation challenge today, we would like you to email to us at friendsafforestation@gmail.com what you think would belong in a list for the Rights of Rivers????

Finally, the folks over at International Rivers is having their our own Day of Action event called “Life of a River: From Restoration to Protection and Rights“. This is a virtual online celebration (co-hosted with American Rivers) we will be hearing from movement representatives just like you to share and discuss emerging tactics and themes in global river protection and Indigenous rights work! As a further challenge, record on iNaturalist or the eBird hotspot for Chappell Marsh the wetlands birds which you have sighted. The International Day of Action for Rivers Pamphlet contains a water birds checklist as an indicator of what might be sighted. The Geese and some ducks are back already (March 11)

We must begin thinking like a river if we are to leave a legacy of beauty and life for future generations.

Homemade Bird Feeders

Here is another awesome decoration for the forest.

Save an orange rind. Then mix peanut butter and or suet with bird feed. Put the mixture into the orange rind. Hang your bird feeder with string on a tree branch.

Get a butternut squash, spaghetti squash, cut it in half and clean out the centre. Mix suet or peanut butter with bird feed. Place a wooden skewer stick through the the squash near the top of the cut edge. Insert another wooden skewer stick through the squash the other way to make a + sign across the squash. Tie a two strings to the four ends of the skewers, and hang on a branch in the forest!

Take a photograph of your forest decoration that you hang up in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation area and email it in to friendsafforestation@gmail.com for an opportunity to be entered into a prize draw!

WinterYXE Strategy SURVEY

Your input is required by survey to provide input to the City of Saskatoon by Monday February 22! Today is Saturday February 20, you have two days to read and complete your survey. The draft implementation plan for the WinterYXE Strategy is online for reading.

Winter is fantastic, there are so many opportunities and ways to enjoy Saskatoon. Getting outside is particularly amazing during COVID.

Enjoying the Winter Staycation at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area Winter Wonderland is pretty sweet! The Polar Vortex has passed, and it is just delightful to be outside these days!!! (That being said, ski pants and proper winter apparel even made the Polar Vortex pretty darn good to be outside)

Tell the city that you liked climbing and playing on the snow hills created this year for the first time ever in the southwest off leash recreation area.

Mention that the new Winter Staycation is absolutely fantastic!

Let the city know that walking through the forest is bliss in our windy city. The trees act as a spectacular wind break so people can enjoy the great outdoors.

There are many and several considerations to learn about in the Draft WintercityYXE Implementation Plan and the online survey is a fantastic way of adding your opinion.

Winter Wonderland

While walking along the trails with your COVID bubble, the mushrooms and flowers are down below under the snow…so….take photos of as many different kinds of trees as you can find in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, the forest is an amazing Winter Wonderland! Using iNaturalist will help with the identification of the tree!

In your iNaturalist tree observation include the full photo of the tree, the tree bark and the end of a branch or a twig to help with identification! If it is an evergreen make a note if the needle rolls easily between two finger and is round, or if when rolled the needle feels square.

The TikTok Challenge

The weather is predicted to be fantastic starting February 19…so…come on out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and film a TikTok. This is an absolutely fantastic way to be entered into the prize draw for the Winter Staycation Take It Outside Challenges! Send a photo of your TikTok page which you filmed out in the afforestation area! How amazing is that?

“Who Let The Dogs Out?” is one possible sound track which could accompany off leash dog walkers who are making use of the South West Off Leash Recreation Area! What have you got?

If you are walking in the forest, a possible sound track would be…”These boots are made for walking!” What will you come up with?

Challenges and Prizes

Did the “Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc“, non profit environmental charity mention that there are challenges and an opportunity to be eligible to win prizes? Tomorrow is Monday February 15, family day in Saskatchewan.

Well, during COVID-19 there are Public Health Organisation regulations to not arrange an event with a date and a time. So, our Take It Outside Winter Staycation programming has some amazing challenges to promote being “Outside Safely.”

Our challenges are set up for your family or your personal COVID bubble to come out to the 326 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and have a lot of fun!

With family day coming up, try this activity. At home place a couple of drops of food colouring in a balloon you have freshly removed from a bag of balloons. Then take the balloon and enclose the mouth of the balloon around the water tap, and fill the balloon up. Like making a coloured water balloon.

Make a few of these and put them outside to freeze. Place them in your vehicle and come on out to the afforestation area. When you arrive you can walk your dog in the South West off leash recreation area, and place your creations (remove the rubber balloon, and just leave the coloured ice) alongside the dog park fence or up on the snow piles created by the bulldozers this year! What a great way to cheer up the edges of the forest pathways!

They will even make superlative sun catchers for everyone to enjoy. Take a picture of your snow globes which you have placed in the afforestation area, and send the email in to friendsafforestation@gmail.com to be entered into the prize draw. Yay!

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas have listed their exciting “Winter Staycation” to promote being “Outside Safely” with Nutrien WinterShines – Saskatchewan’s Premier Winter Festival taking place February 15 – 21, 2021. Our non profit environmental charity wish to thank the City of Saskatoon for the Take It Outside Grant to make this programming possible.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. non profit environmental charity is proud to present a COVID friendly Take It Outside Winter Staycation programs and challenges at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. Our challenges posted online provide incentive to “take it outside.” Register your participation for prizes! We promote an “Outside Safely” lifestyle with social distancing in the large space (326 acres) Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Areas encouraging COVID bubbles to take part exciting winter challenges for the Nutrien WinterShines – Saskatchewan’s Premier Winter Festival! February 15 – 21, 2021.
