So as we are making some exciting plans for National Forest Week, we would like to hear from you and your exciting adventures, and ways you are celebrating trees and forests in September. The theme for National Forest Week this year, 2021 is, “Our Forests – Continually Giving.”

Doesn’t that imagery just resonate with you? -Our Forests – Continually Giving-a delightful theme. National Forest Week hosted around Canada’s very own Maple Leaf Day is a time to explore the amazing benefits of trees and forests as they support biodiversity and ecosystems, mitigate flooding, raise the water table, absorb carbon dioxide, provide life-saving oxygen as well as providing amazing greenspace for recreation and healthy lifestyles. It’s a celebration to focus on forest heritage, culture, and history highlighting the importance of trees, their essential ecological services. It’s a time for residents to tell stories about their love of trees, and appreciation of forests and how very blessed we are.

The value of forests helps us take action for the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations such as good health and wellbeing, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action (forests are carbon sinks), life on land, peace justice and strong institutions, partnerships for the future we want.

Have you had a deep, meaningful holistic connection or experience with nature? Have you had the chance to explore and immerse yourself in the afforestation areas – Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area or George Genereux Urban Regional Park. These local forests are a great way to experience a mixed-woods boreal-like forest in a moist grasslands prairie eco-system without driving north past the tree-line.

Share how you are sharing your love of forests during National Forest Week, we would love to include your enthusiasm and plans in our calendar and let the world know how many forest guardians there are celebrating National Forest Week in September, 2021!

If you are a teacher or homeschooler we have been collecting some nature and forest curriculum based resources while developing our afforestation curriculum resources. How very exciting – so stay tuned!

We will let you in on a little secret about Saskatoon’s hidden treasures.

We are also proud to announce our planning for two 50th anniversaries. Whomever has heard of Richard St. Barbe Baker by some estimates the world’s first global conservationist, and very likely the world’s first climate change activist as well. Baker did amazing feats in the era before television and internet. Everyone knows David Suzuki and David Attenborough. Baker was a visionary ahead of his era, and has inspired the planting of over billions of trees during his lifetime, and later billions of trees were lanted by global organizations motivated and galvanized to action from Baker’s example.

We are also celebrating another 50th anniversary with the birthday for the afforestation areas in Saskatoon. This celebration is truly a way to focus our vision of living together on the land in the spirit of Witaskêwin, and highlight the rich geological, historical, natural, and cultural heritage of the areas to honour where we have been. Science, conservation, hands-on learning about the land, environment and sustainability ensure our future. Experience nature immersion at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

SDG 13 Climate Change

Go for the goals! (Sustainable Development Goals) International Development Week, February 7-13 2021 Canada

Today, February 13, is the last day of International Development Week February 7-13 2021 theme Go for the Goals – the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Get involved!

Goal 13 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals addresses Climate Action. There area amazing nature-based solutions to climate change. Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889-1992) was a visionary. By some estimates, organisations Richard St. Barbe Baker founded, assisted and inspired were responsible for planting at least 26 billion trees, internationally, even during his lifetime.

“When the trees go, the rain goes, the climate deteriorates, the water table sinks, the land erodes and desert conditions soon appear”.~Richard St. Barbe Baker

As part of the Take It Outside challenge, come out to the afforestation area for a walk. Determine which trees are native, and which ones were planted during the 1972 afforestation under the Green Survival Program. Add an observation to the iNaturalist app about the trees, and send an email friendsafforestation@gmail.com with a photo of a tree you believe is native, and a photo of a tree you think has been planted. The email will allow you to be entered into the draw for a prize for completing this challenge.

Richard St. Barbe Baker founded the International Tree Foundation which started as the Watu Wya Miti. This phrase from the country of Kenya, and the Kiyuyu peoples roughly translates as Men of the Trees, Forest Scout or Forest Guide. As a forest guide, a solemn pledge was taken to plant at least ten trees every year, take care of trees everywhere, and do a good deed every day.

By coming out to the afforestation area, and making identifications and photographs, it is a great first step to taking care of trees everywhere.

Art! Take Action on the SDG Goals

As part of the Take it Outside Winter Staycation Outside Safely Campaign, here is another challenge!

This week is also International Development Week (IDW) Feb 8-12 to Take Action on Goals – the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals!

The Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation (SCIC) has an event planned for IDW, featuring Art AS Engagement. What a great idea!

Can you pop out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area in Saskatoon, and share an insight into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through artwork?

Take a picture of your canvas and send it in to be entered for the challenge prizes draw. OR….

Fill a couple of spray bottles with water. Color each spray bottle a different color using food coloring. Take your spray bottles out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, and write a message or create art along the trails.

International Development Week – February 7 to 13, 2021 Go For the Goals the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Today is the first day of International Development Week February 7-13 2021 theme Go for the Goals – the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Get involved! Check our also the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation SCIC.

Dr. George Genereux who was he?

George Patrick Genereux born March 1, 1935, passed April 10 1989 first came to public attention in 1952 when he won Canada’s only Gold Medal at the Helsinki Olympics.

An all-round athlete, Genereux suffered from crippling from Rheumatoid Arthritis which forced him to give up his sports career. With a bachelor of arts from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master of Surgery CM along with a Doctorate of Medicine from McGill University, Genereux persued radiology. He soon became a professor, author of some 20 papers, and contributed to book publications. Notably he illustrated and co-authored the Diagnosis of Disease of the Chest four volume work. Genereux, visiting professor and speaker was in demand across Canada at Universities, and delivered the 1987 Fleischner lecture.

The ADSW Summit is starting soon to celebrate Sustainability Week (Monday, 18th January 2021 · · Thursday, 21st January 2021). The ADSW Summit starts Monday January 18 at 11pm CST (9 am GMT)

The Live and Move agenda will focus on “What will the future look like” in regards to sustainability issues around water, growing and future cities, transport, food supply, digitization and the Zayed Sustainability Prize.

The Care and Engage Agenda examines technological advances, the health crisis and artificial intelligence, climate change actions and behaviour, oil and petroleum consumption, sustainable fashion creativity, alongside green and digital recovery and resilience.

Work and Invest agenda has important discussion on Environmental, Social and Governance such as corporation action on climate change and how the environment is considered to be on the teeter totter with economic and commercial growth and how to change that mindset. It’s a look at unchecked consumption with fewer and fewer resources to supply the demand.

Climate Adaptation Summit 2021

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. did register as a successful side event for the Climate Adaptation Summit 2021 which took place 25-26 January 2021. The programme explores nature based solutions, weather-wise cities, resilient cities locally led adaptation as well as supporting events, side events along with the anchoring events.

The Climate Adaptation Summit 2021 states “Our planet is getting warmer, which has a growing impact on our societies and economies. We need to adapt to a new, more extreme climate.“

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. know how important afforestation areas are in their role as carbon sinks in this era of climate change.

The 2020 target of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land is to “Promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.”

The United Nations mandates urgent action and a global paradigm shift to “take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species.”

The City of Saskatoon is growing and developing a long range plan for the Blairmore Sector and is at the table for the P4G long range planning. To guide the action for the City of Saskatoon, they have set out a course of action to follow. Under the Strategic Goal of Environmental Leadership, Saskatoon has defined an objective to attain within ten years -which is to “improve access to ecological systems and spaces, both natural and naturalized.” – Strategic Goal 2013-2023
