We all know that getting outside and connecting with nature is essential for our mental and physical health and wellbeing. But when the winter months arrive, it can seem like a daunting task to get out in the cold and explore the outdoors. However, a wintertime nature escape can be just as magical and therapeutic as any summer adventure.

Exploring the forest during winter can bring unique opportunities to connect with nature. The snow-covered trees and the crisp air can provide a peaceful atmosphere for reflection and relaxation. The decrease of life in the winter months also means that the sounds of nature are amplified, allowing us to take in the subtle tones of the forest.

The frigid temperatures of winter can also bring unexpected surprises. If you’re lucky, you could stumble across a group of animals migrating to warmer climates, or a herd of animals gathering in an area to keep warm. Taking a walk in the forest during winter can be an opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitats.

Spending time in nature during the winter months can also provide a number of health benefits. Studies have shown that exposure to nature can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while also improving overall physical health. Taking a walk in the woods can also help to boost your immune system and help you to fight illnesses.

But it’s important to be prepared before heading out in the cold. Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather, and to bring food, water, and a map if you plan to explore for a long period of time.

So don’t be afraid to get out and explore the forest during winter. You’ll be rewarded with a peaceful, tranquil environment and the chance to connect with nature in a way you’d never have imagined. WinterYXE Strategy SURVEY

Your input is required by survey to provide input to the City of Saskatoon by Monday February 22! Today is Saturday February 20, you have two days to read and complete your survey. The draft implementation plan for the WinterYXE Strategy is online for reading.

Winter is fantastic, there are so many opportunities and ways to enjoy Saskatoon. Getting outside is particularly amazing during COVID.

Enjoying the Winter Staycation at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area Winter Wonderland is pretty sweet! The Polar Vortex has passed, and it is just delightful to be outside these days!!! (That being said, ski pants and proper winter apparel even made the Polar Vortex pretty darn good to be outside)

Tell the city that you liked climbing and playing on the snow hills created this year for the first time ever in the southwest off leash recreation area.

Mention that the new Winter Staycation is absolutely fantastic!

Let the city know that walking through the forest is bliss in our windy city. The trees act as a spectacular wind break so people can enjoy the great outdoors.

There are many and several considerations to learn about in the Draft WintercityYXE Implementation Plan and the online survey is a fantastic way of adding your opinion.

While walking along the trails with your COVID bubble, the mushrooms and flowers are down below under the snow…so….take photos of as many different kinds of trees as you can find in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, the forest is an amazing Winter Wonderland! Using iNaturalist will help with the identification of the tree!

In your iNaturalist tree observation include the full photo of the tree, the tree bark and the end of a branch or a twig to help with identification! If it is an evergreen make a note if the needle rolls easily between two finger and is round, or if when rolled the needle feels square.

Challenges and Prizes

Did the “Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc“, non profit environmental charity mention that there are challenges and an opportunity to be eligible to win prizes? Tomorrow is Monday February 15, family day in Saskatchewan.

Well, during COVID-19 there are Public Health Organisation regulations to not arrange an event with a date and a time. So, our Take It Outside Winter Staycation programming has some amazing challenges to promote being “Outside Safely.”

Our challenges are set up for your family or your personal COVID bubble to come out to the 326 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and have a lot of fun!

With family day coming up, try this activity. At home place a couple of drops of food colouring in a balloon you have freshly removed from a bag of balloons. Then take the balloon and enclose the mouth of the balloon around the water tap, and fill the balloon up. Like making a coloured water balloon.

Make a few of these and put them outside to freeze. Place them in your vehicle and come on out to the afforestation area. When you arrive you can walk your dog in the South West off leash recreation area, and place your creations (remove the rubber balloon, and just leave the coloured ice) alongside the dog park fence or up on the snow piles created by the bulldozers this year! What a great way to cheer up the edges of the forest pathways!

They will even make superlative sun catchers for everyone to enjoy. Take a picture of your snow globes which you have placed in the afforestation area, and send the email in to friendsafforestation@gmail.com to be entered into the prize draw. Yay!

Seasons Greetings

Merry Christmas, best holiday wishes, and seasons greetings

The holiday season is upon us, and out at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area seasons greetings abound. Out at the South West Off Leash Recreation Area, a note waves in the breeze wishing one and all a Merry Christmas. A little further along the path, a Scot Pine is decorated. The note welcomes further contributions if anyone wishes to grow the decorations on this little tree for Christmas.

Little plastic covers are attached to the Christmas note. These plastic bags would hold photos of your favourite pet to commemorate them on the SW OLRA Christmas Tree.

The seasonal note ends with a wonderful blessing to “please enjoy and all the best of the holiday season.”

There has been a lot of fog these past few days. Today, boxing day, the cloud cover along with the fog has dissipated but not the winter wonderland. The hoar frost and rime ice combination has still made most beauteous scenes. As the sun shines, the wonderful effect may dissipate, so come out and enjoy while it lasts!

“Rime frost or rime ice forms in the fog as water droplets in the air freeze on surfaces. With heavy fog around…a, the conditions were perfect for ice to form with temperatures below the freezing mark and very light winds. As the winds slowly pick up, the fog will dissipate.

Hoar frost, on the other hand, forms with different circumstances. This type of frost will form when dew freezes to the colder surface, much the same as rime ice, but hoar frost will typically form in clear conditions.”source

Rime Ice landscapes

“Rime ice forms when super-cooled water liquid droplets freeze onto surfaces. Meteorologists distinguish between three basic types of ice forming on vertical and horizontal surfaces by deposition of super-cooled water droplets. Of course there are also intermediate formations, whereas, hoar frost (refers to white ice crystals deposited on the ground or loosely attached to exposed objects, such as wires or leaves. They form on cold, clear nights when conditions are such that heat radiates out to the open air faster than it can be replaced from nearby sources, such as wind or warm objects. Under suitable circumstances, objects cool to below the frost point of the surrounding air, well below the freezing point of water. Such freezing may be promoted by effects such as flood frost or frost pocket. These occur when ground-level radiation losses cool air until it flows downhill and accumulates in pockets of very cold air in valleys and hollows. Hoar frost may freeze in such low-lying cold air even when the air temperature a few feet above ground is well above freezing.” according to Wikipedia

Weather Online UK states that, “Rime is denser and harder than hoar frost, but lighter, softer, and less transparent than glaze.” This may be the reason why the last week’s winter wonderland did not behave like hoar frost. If the tree branches were tapped, the “hoar frost” did not fall to the ground, the “rime” held on for six days. On average, hoar frost will appear in the mornings, and usually disappear by noon when the wind picks up or the sun warms up the temperature of the air.

” Rime ice, formed from supercooled fog (water droplets that remain below freezing until they have a surface on which to freeze), is an accumulation of granular ice tufts on the windward side of exposed objects. These ice needles, about 2 inches (5 centimeters) long, point into the direction from which the wind was blowing during the fog…Generally the ‘feathers’ and ‘tails’ point into the wind, but under calm conditions the ‘needles’ might grow into every direction. This is why they can be mistaken as hoar frost. However, unlike hoar frost rime is formed by freezing fog or cloud droplets. ,” according to OpenSky which is the home for NCAR/UCAR research. It is true that at the afforestation areas this past week, the trees were showing rime ice formed on the south east sides, which tells the tail that the wind was blowing from the south east during the last few foggy days!!!

The trees situated within the cover of the forest were not as heavily coated as those trees on the southeast perimeter.

Well, whatever the phenomenon, the last week was indeed spectacular with the rime ice on the trees!
