Grateful because of you

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. wish to thank our donors for their donations through Canada Helps and Paypal Giving. Thanks to you contributions, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas can offer place based educational learning trips to the afforestation areas helping to sponsor portable toilet rentals or offset bus trip fees to nature immersion classes. Because of you, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas can protect the wildlife habitats, the flora and fauna from illegal trespass and illegal dumping as your contribution goes towards trash bags for clean ups, wildlife friendly fencing and the tagging of the fencing.

Your generosity supports the greenspaces of the 326 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the 148 acre George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

Your amazing contribution is a testament to the difference between a parking lot and a greenspace park, a semi-wilderness habitat, indeed. Because of you, it will be possible to support these greenspaces, and protect them for this generation and the next.

If you live in Saskatoon and area- thanks for calling for your recycling pick up. We will sort the bottles and stand in line. Your contribution goes a long way in environmental protections.

Here is a link to the promised free pdf download page from the Living Legacy 50 for 50 activity book connecting activities with place based exploration!

You truly have made a difference.

“St. Barbe’s unique capacity to pass on his enthusiasm to others. . . Many foresters all over the world found their vocations as a result of hearing ‘The Man of the Trees’ speak. I certainly did, but his impact has been much wider than that. Through his global lecture tours, St. Barbe has made millions of people aware of the importance of trees and forests to our planet.” Allan Grainger

“The science of forestry arose from the recognition of a universal need. It embodies the spirit of service to mankind in attempting to provide a means of supplying forever a necessity of life and, in addition, ministering to man’s aesthetic tastes and recreational interests. Besides, the spiritual side of human nature needs the refreshing inspiration which comes from trees and woodlands. If a nation saves its trees, the trees will save the nation. And nations as well as tribes may be brought together in this great movement, based on the ideal of beautifying the world by the cultivation of one of God’s loveliest creatures – the tree.” ~ Richard St. Barbe Baker.

“I believed that God has lent us the Earth. It belongs as much to those who come after us as to us, and it ill behooves us by anything we do or neglect, to deprive them of benefits which are in our power to bequeath.” Richard St. Barbe Baker

Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Welcomes Clean up Support From Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westgate Plaza

On June 5, the clean green community scene volunteer clean up of George Genereux Park takes place in Saskatoon.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. are very appreciative of the support and help offered by Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza for the June 5 clean up. They went above and beyond in the fall of 2020, and now volunteers are coming out on Saturday June 5 – very likely for the last time for a major huge afforestation area clean up, and again, Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza is providing support. Refreshments for volunteers is so greatly appreciated, and will go a long way for the well being of all the volunteers who will keep hydrated and sustained with individual snacks.

Ivan And Ila's No Frills Store Westgate Plaza 2410 22nd St W Saskatoon
Ivan And Ila’s No Frills Store Westgate Plaza 2410 22nd St W Saskatoon

Support such is this by Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza is vital, very much acknowledged and appreciated by the volunteers who all came out on Saturday June 5 between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. Users to the George Genereux Urban Regional Park include families, dog walkers, citizen scientists doing bio-blitzes, walkers, bird-bander, cyclists who all enjoy the mixed man-made forest on the prairies. In the fall of 2020 there was Sep 19 2020 kg   9270 pounds and on Oct 20 2016   1500kg or 3,307 pounds of trash removed. Even though volunteers worked tirelessly, there were still trash piles left at the end of the two cleanups. George Genereux Urban Regional Park becomes 50 years old in 2022 and this is the first environmental protection event and trash clean up afforded this urban regional park, so that is why there is another volunteer clean up is needed on June 5, 2021.

All this will create a much safer environment for the general public and for the health of the environment.  Is that not what June 5, day is all about?

June 5 is….. Arbor Week request for city proclamation by SOS Trees Inc.!

June 5 is….. the first day of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

June 5 is….. International Trails Day.

June 5 is….. World Environment Day.

June 5 is….. Clean Green Community Scene.

Thank you and gratitude is are extended to Ivan and Ila and Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza which is located at 2410 22nd St W at the corner of Avenue W North and 22nd St W.  And Ivan and Ila helped to act locally and think globally on World Environment Day.   Isn’t it ever so wonderful to have safe urban regional parks, safe wildlife habitats and to also keep the volunteers safe and hydrated?

As William Shakespeare says, “I can no other answer make but thanks, and thanks, and ever thanks.” –

It is amazing that this list is still growing! Saskatoon is truly wonderful. If your business is not listed yet, and you would like more information about how you can support the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area Winter Staycation for the Nutrien Wintershines and the City of Saskatoon Take It Outside programming that would be fantastic to hear from you! Email friendsafforestation@gmail.com

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. (Friends) is focused on the protection and enhancement of the Richard St Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (RSBBAA) and the adjacent George Genereux Urban Regional Park (GGURP). We aim to increase public awareness about these large naturalized heritage areas, created by tree planting, and involve the community in both using and taking care of them. We use our extensive research on the geological, ecological and cultural history of these protected areas of the West Swale to contribute to Saskatoon’s green infrastructure and heritage planning. We are developing place-based learning opportunities in the afforestation areas alongside community and school groups, and in cooperation with civic authorities. Having organized several successful community-based clean-ups of the areas we are actively working to prevent further misuse by placing signage and barriers to illegal entry. Our general educational activities align with and enhance the City’s environmental goals.

If you would like more information about the non profit environmental charity Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc, The Take It Outside Winter Staycation programme, or wish to be a supporter, please email friendsafforestation@gmail.com We look forward to hearing from you.

United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration

“Where there is great love, there are always wishes.

Willa Cather

“Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward in the same direction.” –Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Today is the day!

Protecting the environment, taking action on climate change, conservation and restoration for species at risk, all while enjoying nature it doesn’t get better than this! Take part in the launch of “Our Forest Returns Saskatoon” – a campaign to kickstart the amazing wonders of winter in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and out at George Genereux Urban Regional Park. YouTube video

Did you know that just $100 towards the conservation of the afforestation areas is an amazing way to take action on climate change as trees are the largest and cheapest method of removing CO2 from the atmosphere mitigating climate change.  Forests clean our air, our water, and regulate our climate.  Forests help to manage and alleviate flooding.

Did you know that just $90 does greatly assist in the installation of interpretive signs and the creation of an afforestation area outdoor classroom for children across the City of Saskatoon.

Did you know that just $75 would go towards 125m of wildlife friendly fence can be installed.  This allows the deer fawns and moose calves to pass through without getting caught in the fence, or without being left behind.

Did you know that just $60 towards the installation of a garbage receptacle would greatly protect the semi- wilderness habitat without pollution in the environment.  This installation will protect the natural areas at this amazing habitat.

Did you know that just $50 towards the protection of habitat for bees and other pollinators which help keep our planet and our city green.  They are facing habitat loss, and what a better place than the afforestation areas to protect their habitat where herbicides and pesticides are not in use.

Did you know that just $40 would support the installation of a park identification sign to mitigate illegal motorized vehicle trespass and illegal trash dumping.

Did you know that just sponsoring a tree with $25 a month would enable that the proper Afforestation Area protections are in place.  Receive information about  your tree.  This is a gift that keeps on giving, and you can be a part of the effort to protect these trees in perpetuity.

Did you know that just $20 would be a benefit for providing groups of volunteers with facemasks, gloves and trash bags to conduct clean ups.  Community volunteer clean ups go a long way to protect the woodlands, grasslands and wetlands.

A gift like these make a real difference.  Make an impact with your gift, and help make the world a better place. Show some love on #GivingTuesday. Thanks to your awesome support, trees will continue to do what they do best, sequester carbon, and give oxyen and mitigate climate change so vitally important during this era of warmer, wetter and wilder weather. How can you help?

What is a Saskatoon Wild Forest Angel or steward of the afforestation areas for the Our Forest Returns Saskatoon campaign? How does becoming a steward or guardian make a difference for nature in the City of Saskatoon afforestation areas?

Thank you kindly to all the amazing folks who nominated the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas! You were amazing! (Important update and Online Help needed!) Thank you also to everyone who took the time today and in the past few weeks to make a donation for #GivingTuesdayCA. Wow! That is ever so wonderful, and does surely make a huge difference. The afforestation area green infrastructure provides a wide array of benefits to people and wildlife, and it is the users of the greenspace who know how absolutely awesome the afforestation areas are, and it is good to hear from all of you indeed!

“The future of the planet concerns all of us, and all of us should do what we can to protect it. ” Wangari Maathai.

If a nations saves its trees, the trees will save the nation. And nations as well as tribes may be brought together in this great movement, based on the ideal of beautifying the world by the cultivation of one of God’s loveliest creatures – the tree.” ~ Richard St. Barbe Baker.
