Let’s talk Forest

A project which the Canadian Wildlife Federation WILD Group is underway. A COVID initiative featuring little trail messages introduces this youth group – young men and women between 14-17 who have come out to the afforestation area and walked along the trails.

Sadly some of the signs the teenagers have worked hard on all winter long have come down. The initiative was a part of a unique safe COVID project. If you see any of the signs down, please place them at the benches area east of the SW dog park and they will return to finish up their project – which will include an online component. Thank you so much for your help as the CWF initiative takes shape for the afforestation areas east of the SW OLRA.

A large afforestation area welcome goes out to a new group who loves the forest. The dog walkers, cyclists, wedding parties, dog photographers, astronomers, nature lovers are all welcoming people, and it is great that the teenagers are learning about the afforestation areas, and enjoying the trails and man-made woodlands created on the prairies.

Forest Restoration

March 21 is a spectacular day! It is the United Nations International Day of Forests! This is a day to take especial notice of the semi-wilderness bio-diversity in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the George Genreux Urban Regional Park.

During these days of COVID with isolation, loneliness, anxiety, depression, and having COVID affecting our family, work and lives to such a great extent, it is wonderful to have a natural prescription for healing and have a walk in the forest. This is a very healing, peaceful, and restorative process to connect with nature in these weird times.

Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area is 326 acres, and George Genereux Urban Regional Park is 148 acres, so plenty of room for social distancing, to derive some fantastic health benefits.

There is great importance in forests. Richard St. Barbe Baker, himself had a tree pledge for forest guardians: to plant ten trees a year, take care of trees everywhere, and do one good deed every day. The theme of International Day of Forests this year is “‘Forest Restoration: a path to recovery and well-being.” This ties into United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration very well indeed!

So let us all take up Richard St. Barbe Baker’s forest guardian pledge starting on the International Day of Forests. Let us all plant ten trees a year, take care of trees everywhere, and do one good deed every day. What a great thought during these weird COVID times for sure.\

To be eligible for our prize draw, for the challenge on International Day of Forests, let us know via email how you have taken the pledge to plant ten trees a year, take care of trees everywhere, and how you have done a good deed every day!

“A simple act of kindness and compassion towards a single animal may not mean anything to all creatures, but will mean everything to one.”
― Paul Oxton

“To be standing together in a frosty field, looking up into the sky, marvelling at birds and revelling in the natural world around us, was a simple miracle. And I wondered why we were so rarely able to appreciate it.”

It is amazing that this list is still growing! Saskatoon is truly wonderful. If your business is not listed yet, and you would like more information about how you can support the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area Winter Staycation for the Nutrien Wintershines and the City of Saskatoon Take It Outside programming that would be fantastic to hear from you! Email friendsafforestation@gmail.com

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. (Friends) is focused on the protection and enhancement of the Richard St Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (RSBBAA) and the adjacent George Genereux Urban Regional Park (GGURP). We aim to increase public awareness about these large naturalized heritage areas, created by tree planting, and involve the community in both using and taking care of them. We use our extensive research on the geological, ecological and cultural history of these protected areas of the West Swale to contribute to Saskatoon’s green infrastructure and heritage planning. We are developing place-based learning opportunities in the afforestation areas alongside community and school groups, and in cooperation with civic authorities. Having organized several successful community-based clean-ups of the areas we are actively working to prevent further misuse by placing signage and barriers to illegal entry. Our general educational activities align with and enhance the City’s environmental goals.

If you would like more information about the non profit environmental charity Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc, The Take It Outside Winter Staycation programme, or wish to be a supporter, please email friendsafforestation@gmail.com We look forward to hearing from you.
