Yes, even in the rain, you can be a part of the City Nature Challenge, unlocking the wonders of the natural world from the comfort of your own home.

Picture this: you’re nestled indoors, cozy and dry, yet your spirit yearns for adventure. Fear not, for the wild awaits just beyond your window. With the simple flick of a wrist and the tap of a screen, you can embark on a journey of discovery that transcends weather and time.

Enter the iNaturalist app, your gateway to a realm of biodiversity teeming with life. As raindrops cascade outside, open your window and listen closely. Can you hear it? The soft serenade of birdsong echoing through the air, a melody as old as time itself. Grab your phone, launch the app, open the windows and let the magic unfold.

Begin with your front yard, a canvas painted with the colors of urban flora and fauna. Record the chirps and trills of feathered friends perched among the branches, their songs a testament to resilience in the face of adversity. Then, venture to the back yard, where hidden treasures await beneath the cloak of rain-soaked foliage. Then when the rain abates, get a bit of exercise outdoors just in case a little mushroom has emerged, as they love the rain! The Saskatoon Mycological Working Group or the NPSS mentions that we need a lot more people recording Fungi around Saskatoon to determine which ones are species at risk, and which are common.

How can 192 hectares be a welcoming space,
For equity-deserving groups, a nurturing place?
We gather, we advocate, we break down the wall,
Making the afforestation areas accessible to all.

Species at risk, we champion their plight,
The Red-Berried Elder, a symbol of light.
Green Ash and American Elm, their majesty dear,
Let’s protect them, their future clear.

Turkey Vultures soaring, imperiled and rare,
Northern Small Yellow Lady’s Slipper, a beauty we share.
Western Yellowjackets, Goldenrod Gall Fly’s plight,
Woodland Skipper’s dance, Silver-spotted Skipper’s flight.

American White Pelicans, their grace in the sky,
Canada Warblers, a secure song nearby.
Semipalmated Sandpipers, a near-threatened breed,
Pine Grosbeaks imperiled, their colors recede.

Barred Tiger Salamanders, Endangered they stand,
Horned Grebes, Bank Swallows, in our hands.
Baird’s Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow’s song,
Western Grebes, Bobolinks, fragile yet strong.

Red-necked Phalaropes, Lesser Yellowlegs too,
Whooping Cranes, their grace, a story we pursue.

The ultimate observation of nature party. What special secrets will nature surprise us with?

This will take place at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area on Sun, 1 May 2022 between 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM CST

About this event

Come out to a nature connection event in a forest in Saskatoon. What is that? A forest? Don’t you know that the City of Saskatoon is on the prairies where there are grasslands? you say.

Well come on out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area to find some wonderfully delightful nature surprises in a man made forest on the prairies. (Map and directions) See attached map to arrive at the west side of Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area near the Saskatoon Italian Centre!

Did you know that

“The City Nature Challenge was founded by Alison Young and Rebecca Johnson of the California Academy of Sciences and Lila Higgins of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The first challenge was in the spring of 2016 between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Participants documented over 20,000 observations with the iNaturalist platform. In 2017, the challenge expanded to 16 cities across the United States and participants collected over 125,000 observations of wildlife in 5 days.In 2018, the challenge expanded to 68 cities across the world.In four days, over 441,000 observations of more than 18,000 species were observed, and over 17,000 people participated. The 2019 challenge more than doubled in scale, with almost a million observations of over 31,000 species observed by around 35,000 people.

Taking the competition beyond its US roots, the 2019 event was a much more international affair, with the winning city for observations and species coming from Africa (Cape Town), and three South American (La Paz, Tena and Quito) and two Asian areas (Hong Kong and Klang Valley) ranking in the top ten for number of observations.

In 2020, the organizers removed the competition aspect due to the COVID-19 pandemic, stating, “To ensure the safety and health of all participants, this year’s CNC is no longer a competition. Instead, we want to embrace the collaborative aspect of sharing observations online with a digital community, and celebrate the healing power of nature as people document their local biodiversity to the best of their ability.” Fewer observations were documented in 2020 than the prior year, though more species were found and more cities and people participated.

2021 saw record high numbers in every category, but as in the previous year, no winning cities were announced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”[source]

So this is Saskatoon’s very, very first year to be involved with the City Nature Challenge. Regina had their City Nature Challenge inauguration last year. They did amazing! Last year, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Nature Regina, Friends of Wascana Marsh, Nature Saskatchewan and the Nature Conservancy of Canada all came together in partnership to host the event in the Regina Area. They made 1,265 observations with a base of 293 species, 231 Identifiers assisted and 84 Observers scanned the green areas of Regina for what could be seen in the early spring. They found some pretty amazing observations for sure! This year, sound recordings of nature as well as observations can be included.

World Health Day is amazing for April 7! By observing local nature, everyone can support vital conservation research while connecting with nature and enjoying the outdoors. Outdoor recreation is typically pursued for purposes of physical exercise, general wellbeing, spiritual renewal, and an opportunity to partake in nature whilst doing so.[source]

Download the free iNaturalist app, and practice looking for and taking pictures of nature. Between April 29 and May 2, researchers, school groups, citizens and wildlife enthusiasts across the world will be taking part in this race against the clock to put nature on the map, submitting photos and observations of wildlife in their neighbourhoods and greenspaces through the free, easy to use iNaturalist smart phone app.

Being Outside advocated by David Suzuki

David Suzuki turns 86 on March 24. Suzuki has been notable as host of The Nature of Things. In 1990, he Co-founded the David Suzuki Foundation which has a mission “to find ways for society to live in balance with the natural world that does sustain us.” The foundation advocates for sustainability, climate action, and The One Nature Challenge.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas concur that spending 30 minutes, just 1/2 hour per day connecting with nature is a wonderful habit to foster a new habit for the year.

With the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, come outside and enjoy the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Park, they are a whopping 149 hectares of forest to explore.

There are some amazing events coming up for the City Nature Challenge Saskatoon and Area for the #CNCYXE2022. Help put the City of Saskatoon on the world nature scene! Using iNaturalist take photos of plants, animals, insects and mushrooms between April 29 to May 2, 2022! Saskatoon will compete for the title of the most Biodiverse City. We need your help. By observing local nature, everyone can support vital conservation research while connecting with nature and enjoying the outdoors.

That’s not all, it is a wonderful and vibrant spring with the Jane’s Walk festival featuring two tours, and events to celebrate Arbor Week. This year SOS Trees Inc. has proclaimed Arbor Week between May 21 to 29, 2022. This is all followed by events for the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day on June 5, and the same day celebrates the 40th anniversary of Richard St. Barbe Baker’s last tree planting. How absolutely wonderful to get outside in nature and celebrate Saskatoon’s Hidden Forests on the Prairies.
