Indigenous Perspective

We are so excited that our project is recognized by SK Arts, a public arts funder. We are very thankful that due to receiving this grant from SK Arts, our project will now be able to move forward in a timely manner to bring an Indigenous perspective to interpreting the heritage and ecology of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the George Genereux Urban Regional park, our two Saskatoon afforestation areas replete in cultural, geographical, historical, and natural heritage.

The Indigenous and Métis history of the land that is part of the afforestation areas is one of the many stories which can be told. The Old Bone Trail, by which Métis brought buffalo bones to the rail yards in Saskatoon, passed through the RSBBAA.

There is a wealth of heritage from identifying traditional connections with nature, as well as present day local plant names and the use of native plants for healing and medicinal purposes.

Thank you kindly for your consideration in this matter. This is a wonderful project for the 50th anniversary of our Saskatoon Afforestation Areas indeed.

This is in keeping with the spirit of Witaskêwin, living together on the land. We believe this project can be part of an effective long-term strategy to focus our vision on this ideal. In a significant way this project allows the past to meet the present and future. The rich geological, historical, natural, and cultural heritage of the areas honours where we have been. Science, conservation, and hands on learning and interpretive education increases awareness of the City’s environmental goals to ensure our strategic goals are aligned into the future.

If we commemorate, honour and respect the past, and celebrate the present we can provide a legacy for the future. These stories provide residents and visitors alike, the story of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, George Genereux Urban Regional Park, and the West Swale to increase the awareness of the mosaic of unique natural, cultural, geological and historic features.

Humans go outdoors for the repair of what happens indoors, but they also go outdoors because they seek something greater than can be found indoors – contact with the natural certainties. Those who recreate here value leisure (watching a sunset, listening to loons, or to rain) in contrast to work for pay; they value being in a wild world that runs itself and need not be laboured over. They value work (climbing, setting up camp) that isn’t for pay; an environment with zest, in contrast to a boring or familiar job. They value an escape, if you like, but they value also being drawn to roots. They want to know the weather, protected by minimal but enough cover and shelter as to leave rain or sun close at hand. They want to submit to the closing day at dusk, to be roused by the rising sun without benefit of clock. They wan to know the passing seasons when migrants return, or leaves fall, without benefit of calendar.

The Saskatoon Nature Society, and the Stewards of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation area are very proud that the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area is included in the new edition of their book, “Nature and Viewing Sites In and Around Saskatoon”. The public awareness of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, Saskatoon’s Best Kept Secret, is invaluable, and is currently the new direction forward being adopted by the Stewards of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

“The Saskatoon Nature Society, a charitable organization founded in 1955, brings together those interested in the natural world. Our objective is to promote the appreciation of nature and encourage a deeper knowledge of it through observation and sharing of experience.

Our society supports nature conservation projects and is an active advocate for the preservation of plant and animal habitats.The SNS is affiliated with Nature Saskatchewan and Nature Canada”^SNS

A new direction has come forward for the Stewards of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area; to tell the story of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area at the citizen level. Getting the story out there looks to embrace the single key concept which came forward time and time again during the meeting from all users and all stakeholders; the need to respect the Afforestation Area.

In this regards, the Saskatoon Nature Society was way ahead in letting Saskatoon know about the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area at the citizen level. For this, the Stewards of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area are deeply thankful and grateful. It is good to know that the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, an afforestation area preserved in perpetuity in 1972, is no longer an outlier nor secret, but is well and truly considered a nature and viewing site of some regard in Saskatoon. If you have never had the chance to view the new edition of their book, “Nature and Viewing Sites In and Around Saskatoon” please do check it out, indeed.

As the Persian Seer of the Bahai said:

I believe that this generation will either be the last to exist in any semblance of a civilized world or it will be the first to have a vision, a daring and a greatness to say:
