notes: On this tour we can socially distance in this 326 acre mixed woods forest or wear masks for any COVID protocols. We can supply masks/water bottles for participants. Please wear pants, socks and suitable walking shoes for walking in a forest, and clothing suitable for the weather.

National Forest Week brings attention to our forests and trees from coast to coast across Canada. Our forests and trees provide habitats for wildlife, insects, polllinator species, birds and so much more! What is the ‘triple environmental emergency we are facing?

1. Loss of biodiversity
2. Climate change
3. Out of control pollution.

Out of control pollution.
Our native biodiversity needs wild spaces, food and homes such as trees and forests provide in which to thrive. Forests, tree planting, and forest conservation initiatives are nature-based solutions towards climate action. Pollution, pesticides, herbicides are escalating the extinction events. Creating safe, organic forest spaces is a large step to halt and slow down the silent sixth mass extinction event of invertebrates, the planet’s bird food on wings. Ornithologists and botanists have noticed that the songbird, and raptor populations have declined by a staggering 48%. The monitored wildlife populations are reduced by a catastrophic 68%. A loss of forests and habitats have caused over 2/3 of our animal populations to totally disappear.

Richard St. Barbe Baker said it this way, “If a person loses one third of his or her skin, the person will die; if a tree loses a third of its bark, the tree will die, and if the world loses a third of its trees, the world will die.
We live less that five minutes without air and the trees give us air we breathe. We live less than five days without water, and trees are absolutely essential in the water cycle. We live less than five weeks without food, and without the trees we could not grow food.” (Filson, Bruce K. October 7, 1982, Western People, p. 5)

A huge word of thank you to the dignitaries who were in attendance at this auspicous event.

Robert White BSA, MES (Env. St.) Board Member Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, who personally knew Richard St. Barbe Baker was the Recipient of the first Men of the Trees Prize at the University of Saskatchewan. Robert was an excellent host and Master of Ceremonies

Councillor David Kirton brought greetings on behalf of the City of Saskatoon

Parks Department from the City of Saskatoon said a few words in honour of World Environment day and these anniversary celebrations.

Andrea Lafond CEO of Meewasin which is notably recognized world-wide for its leadership in conserving the natural resources of the 6,700 hectares of the Meewasin Valley.

Author and Environmentalist Candace Savage from Wild About Saskatoon has written more than two dozen books on nature and cultural history honoured the occasion with greetings and spoke on behalf of the environment.

Elizabeth Bekolay teacher, biologist, environmental author and founder of One School One Farm Sheltberbelt Project has a long history of championing the environment.

Dr. Henrike Rees representing Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) and the PaRx program which just came to Saskatchewan introduced these two environmental programs for health and the environment.

Barbara Biddle Montgomery Place President Community Association brought forward greetings as their community association have been the guardians of the two Saskatoon afforestation areas celebrating their 50th anniversary planted to trees in 1972.

Gift Marufu, Dip. (For.); B.Sc. (Hort.); M.Sc. (Soil/Plant);AAg University of Saskatchewan Grounds Manager also graced the ceremony with a few words about the excellent composting environmental project ongoing on campus, and conduct a campus tree tour.

Scouts Canada and troops will be present at this auspicious occasion. “The environment is central to Scouting and is a key element in the development of engaged citizens. Through Scouting, we never miss out on the opportunity to experience and build a relationship with nature. Environmental exploration has played a prominent role in the Scout Movement since it was founded.”

We should like to express our thank you to Dutch Growers for helping out with the 50th Anniversary of World Environment Day. It was great to have a Bur Oak planted on the University of Saskatchewan campus near the Richard St. Barbe Baker memorial in honour of Richard St. Barbe Baker’s last ever tree planting 40 years ago to the day!

Thank you kindly to Nestor’s Bakery who helped out with amazing refreshments which were enjoyed by many!

It is wonderful to also extend appreciations to the Real Canadian Superstore for their assistance also with refreshments.

Thank you to the City of Saskatoon and Mosaic for your amazing support in helping to make this day happen! Thank you to the community who offer assistance with donations and on bottle drives. It is truly appreciated.

National Forest Week The last full week of September. Maple Leaf Day the Wednesday of that week.

So as we are making some exciting plans for National Forest Week, we would like to hear from you and your exciting adventures, and ways you are celebrating trees and forests in September. The theme for National Forest Week this year, 2021 is, “Our Forests – Continually Giving.”

Doesn’t that imagery just resonate with you? -Our Forests – Continually Giving-a delightful theme. National Forest Week hosted around Canada’s very own Maple Leaf Day is a time to explore the amazing benefits of trees and forests as they support biodiversity and ecosystems, mitigate flooding, raise the water table, absorb carbon dioxide, provide life-saving oxygen as well as providing amazing greenspace for recreation and healthy lifestyles. It’s a celebration to focus on forest heritage, culture, and history highlighting the importance of trees, their essential ecological services. It’s a time for residents to tell stories about their love of trees, and appreciation of forests and how very blessed we are.

The value of forests helps us take action for the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations such as good health and wellbeing, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action (forests are carbon sinks), life on land, peace justice and strong institutions, partnerships for the future we want.

Have you had a deep, meaningful holistic connection or experience with nature? Have you had the chance to explore and immerse yourself in the afforestation areas – Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area or George Genereux Urban Regional Park. These local forests are a great way to experience a mixed-woods boreal-like forest in a moist grasslands prairie eco-system without driving north past the tree-line.

Share how you are sharing your love of forests during National Forest Week, we would love to include your enthusiasm and plans in our calendar and let the world know how many forest guardians there are celebrating National Forest Week in September, 2021!

If you are a teacher or homeschooler we have been collecting some nature and forest curriculum based resources while developing our afforestation curriculum resources. How very exciting – so stay tuned!

We will let you in on a little secret about Saskatoon’s hidden treasures.

We are also proud to announce our planning for two 50th anniversaries. Whomever has heard of Richard St. Barbe Baker by some estimates the world’s first global conservationist, and very likely the world’s first climate change activist as well. Baker did amazing feats in the era before television and internet. Everyone knows David Suzuki and David Attenborough. Baker was a visionary ahead of his era, and has inspired the planting of over billions of trees during his lifetime, and later billions of trees were lanted by global organizations motivated and galvanized to action from Baker’s example.

We are also celebrating another 50th anniversary with the birthday for the afforestation areas in Saskatoon. This celebration is truly a way to focus our vision of living together on the land in the spirit of Witaskêwin, and highlight the rich geological, historical, natural, and cultural heritage of the areas to honour where we have been. Science, conservation, hands-on learning about the land, environment and sustainability ensure our future. Experience nature immersion at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

Take Care Of The Afforestation Areas

Today, a fantastic day to celebrate Earth Day! EarthDay.org advocates hat we all take action, whether to become a citizen scientist, reduce-reuse-recycle or have a plant-based meal.

“The world’s problem, is not a population explosion, but animal explosion. We’ve got to decide whether we are going to feed animals or humans. To feed animals is a roundabout way of getting food. It takes 18 times more land to feed people on beef than on vegetables, nuts fruits and grains.” Richard St. Barbe Baker.

Earth Day Canada has a campaign #TakeCareOfThePlanet! Doesn’t that sound like the best idea ever. There are more ideas of how to become involved in Earth Day.

Trees Canada has 21 most excellent ideas for how to celebrate Earth Day today.

Even Project Learning Tree has Earth Day activities for youth

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. encourages everyone to take care of the Earth, by caring for the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park with our own local campaign #TakeCareOfTheAfforestationAreas! Don’t cut elm in the park. Encourage everyone to reduce, reuse and recycle then we may not see quite so much trash illegally deposited in the forest. Participate in volunteer clean up days, or don’t wait….pick up an item of trash next time you are on a walk. If everyone picked up one or two items of trash, there would soon be none at all 😉

“They’re teaching about The Pyramid of Life in the schools today. There is the ground producing all the soil bacteria, which is in the top few inches. That grows the grass, and a a lamb comes along and eats ten pounds of grass, and that makes one lamb, and then a tiger comes along and eats ten pounds of lamb, and that makes one pound of tiger. We have too many tigers. The Pyramid of Life is upset, and one of the things we must do is to turn from an animal economy to a silvan economy. We’ve got to have tree crops, instead of wasting all this land for raising beef and bringing money to the beef barons, who are proud to call themselves beef barons. It takes eighteen times more land to feed people on beef than it does on nuts and fruit. Eighteen times more land. When half the human family today are dying from starvation. “D.O.G. YXE ~ Dog Walkers Off-leash Get-together Gala in Saskatoon YXE.”

This 90 minute festival will begin with a kick-off celebration first; meet “Sparky” the Saskatoon Fire Department mascot . The (1.7 km) walk will include information on Saskatoon’s off leash recreation areas, an insight into the wildlife habitat, health benefits of dog walking, celebrating special occasions in the city you love and providing opportunities for participants to share their own stories. This walk will surely be fun and informative. Representatives from the City of Saskatoon Animal Services Dog Parks will speak to the City’s off leash recreation areas,, the Saskatoon Fire Department will talk about keeping your dog safe around the water.

Bring your pooch, or borrow one from your neighbour and join us for a walk around the South West Off Leash Recreation Area at 10:00 a.m. Friday May 5, 2017 (this walk) OR the Sutherland Beach Off Leash Recreation Area at 2:00 p.m. Friday May 5, 2017! Dress for the weather ~ on average 11.2 Celsius~ please bring a collar, and leash, insect repellent and a bottle of water, and wear proper footwear for walking along a packed dirt roadway…. However, you do not need a pooch to participate! … D.O.G. YXE Jane Walks are free and designed for all residents of Saskatoon and community members. Join us for a walk and be eligible for some give-aways. (while quantities last).

“A city street equipped to handle strangers, and to make a safety asset, in itself, our of the presence of strangers, as the streets of successful city neighborhoods always do, must have three main qualities:

First, there must be a clear demarcation between what is public space and what is private space. Public and private spaces cannot ooze into each other as they do typically in suburban settings or in projects.

Second, there must be eyes upon the street, eyes belonging to those we might call the natural proprietors of the street. The buildings on a street equipped to handle strangers and to insure the safety of both residents and strangers, must be oriented to the street. They cannot turn their backs or blank sides on it and leave it blind.

And third, the sidewalk must have users on it fairly continuously, both to add to the number of effective eyes on the street and to induce the people in buildings along the street to watch the sidewalks in sufficient numbers. Nobody enjoys sitting on a stoop or looking out a window at an empty street. Almost nobody does such a thing. Large numbers of people entertain themselves, off and on, by watching street activity.”
