As you are observing March 17 think green protocols remember to find opportunities to do it “green.” When you wipe down your door knobs, and mailboxes, use a recycled sheet of newspaper dipped in a water-bleach solution rather than using anti-bacterial wipes. Use newspaper as a great way to polish your mirrors and windows when you spray them with an ammonia OR a water-vinegar solutions This is a great way to recycle! When you are observing a voluntary self-isolation, use dishware, and cutlery which can be washed, and re-used rather than disposable items. Any types of action you make, will make a huge difference to the environment!

Save some money, and go vegetarian, and save room in your freezer! A great meal which is super healthy, is a yoga retreat classic; Kichari. Soak some measured quantities of rice and lentil beans overnight. Drain the water before you are ready to cook them. Add double the amount of fresh water, bring to a boil then cook on the stove top for 20 minutes on simmer (covered.) Make each day a special treat by adding different herbs and fresh vegetables to your Kichari for that day.

Another green idea for your fresh vegetables, is by starting your own sprouts! In just a couple of days your sprouts are ready, and the only investment, is some sprouting seeds. Amazing and Green!

Richard St. Barbe Baker..said to a lady once who wanted to plant a tree in his honour, “Madam, don’t plant a tree, plant a wood.” And here, in Saskatoon, we have planted an afforestation area named in honour of Richard St. Barbe Baker, biologist and botanist, environmental activist and author.

Hon. Dustin Duncan, Minister of the Environment has proclaimed Friday May 22, 2020 the very first Arbor Day in the Province of Saskatchewan. Yay!

During the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic we cannot safely host a group tree planting ceremony. So, we did the next best thing, we are hosting a virtual forest protection event!

Isn’t it great to have safe forests to enjoy the natural, recreational, and health benefits of forests? Come on board! We have successfully with the help of our sponsors raised money to mitigate illegal vehicle trespass from the west side of the afforestation area!

Thank you to the City of Saskatoon Environmental Grant, Expocrete, EcoFriendly Saskatchewan, Fatlanders Fatbike Brigade, Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, Sask Energy, SaskOutdoors, and the amazing citizens of Saskatoon for rallying around with donations and grants in support of park protection!

Guess what? There is now an Arbor Day Safe Forests Go Fund Me Page to support our trees in the afforestation areas! We are so close to having a means to barricade entrance by motorized vehicles at the west side area to prevent illegal trespass and illegal dumping! It would be fantastic to be able to level the ground and gravel the surface of this low-lying area for the vehicle barriers. We just need that little bit more! With your help during Arbor Week, it will surely make a grand difference.

Wouldn’t it be ever so nice not to have another huge community volunteer clean up? Don’t get me wrong, it was amazing to turn around the eco-system, and see the forest and the environment restored to a healthy eco-system without trash. But it will be ever so nice to not have those drive in hauling their trash into a park by those too lazy or cheap to go to the landfill. Then huge community clean ups are not needed any longer!!! Yay!!!

A BOTTLE DRIVE done safely!!! During the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot go door to door asking for bottles, but we can post our virtual bottle drive, and arrange a safe pick up.

If you should wish to support a forest and wetlands in the city, we are a non-profit charity raising money to protect these wonderful afforestation areas!

Please phone us for a recycling bottle drive pick up! We will come, and store the bottles in a garage until SARCAN re-opens. So, if you have too many bottles laying around- and they are just in the way, then do some community good, protect some endangered species, work towards saving a forest, wetlands and grasslands in Saskatoon and DONATE YOUR BOTTLES TO A BOTTLE DRIVE!

Eco-Quest COVID-19 Activity

Today, an invitation is extended to you to take part in the Genereux Park Eco-Quest GP-EQ and the Baker Area Eco-Quest BA-EQ. These two events are being done out at the afforestation areas to inventory all the living, growing, crawling, walking, leaping, plants, animals, and bugs. Well, you know that these are weird and uncertain times with the novel Coronavirus COVID-19 going around. Soooooo the Genereux Park Eco-Quest and the Baker Area Eco-Quest are not planned for a day nor a time. The Genereux Park Eco-Quest and the Baker Area Eco-Quest are not group events, and yet they are – they are virtual group events.

The Eco-Quests work by downloading the i-Naturalist app onto your smart phone. Come out to the afforestation area individually or as a household. Use the app to take a photograph of something you see in nature. The i-Naturalist app works as your ‘field guide’ and will provide a suggestion on identification.

Also, looking and watching for various items in nature is like a “Where’s Waldo” puzzle activity. They are fun for the whole family. People can meet online and work together via their computer, and yet be out in public with social distancing. Students can increase their science awareness of nature. Rare and uncommon habitats, plants and animals can be discovered. These Eco-quests are a great way to connect with the environment and appreciate the biodiversity which exists. Eco-quests are challenging, and encouraging to everyone to appreciate the greenspace which may be taken for granted. Eco-quests are a means to become intrigued with the beauty and wonder of the natural world around us.

With an increased footprint, are there any locales or conservation strategies needed? Are there any species which need protection? Are there any reptiles (lizards and snakes), amphibians (frogs), lichen, fungi (mushrooms) spiders, fish, mollusks (snails), mosses, mammals birds, or plants in the afforestation areas?

After you are finished comment on the following statements;

I know more plant species than bird species. Yes. No. Not applicable.
I listed only live species which I saw or heard. Yes. No. Not applicable.
I looked for new species which I never saw before. Yes. No. Not applicable.
I listed only those species for which I was sure of the name. Yes. No. Not applicable.

This virtual Eco-Quest is a great way for you to connect with your sports group, physical, mental and spiritual health organisation. Let your group know about this activity, and everyone can go out at the time most convenient to them. Then online you can discuss with them how they made out during their time in the afforestation area. You can compare notes, and see who found the most birds, and who found the most plants.

Getting involved in the Genereux Park Eco-Quest and the Baker Area Eco-Quest are an amazing way to spend some time outdoors. Doing an activity outdoors alleviates anxiety, mental health issues, depression, and worries about the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a win-win situation! It’s a great way to “see” what is in nature, increase your knowledge of the world around you, and inspire you to learn more!

Stimulate learning, relaxation, fun and enhance your learning ability. Only go out on your individual Eco-Quest with those from your household. Please keep social distance from anyone outside your own household.

Not only does your participation in the Eco-Quest make a huge difference in the results, but it is great fun, and enhances a beautiful walk through the forest, the grasslands or along the wetlands. It is rewarding connecting with scientists and other individuals. It is wonderful to interact with the local community, and it results in a relaxing and rewarding day interacting, observing nature, and delving into the number of birds, and wildlife habitats. You don’t even realize you are exercising until you are done, and look at how many steps you took. It is a means to great self-care, and a wonderful way to take care of your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Rather than connecting with the stress and anxiety of COVID-19 for this moment in time, take a holiday in nature, and immerse yourself in beauty.

12 Annual RCE Recognition Event

The 12 Annual RCE SK Education for Sustainable Development Recognition Event will be live-streamed Wednesday May 13, 2020 at https://www.uregina.ca/science/live.html. The event will started at 9:30 a.m.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. are very proud to have received recognition from RCE Saskatchewan for our hard work and commitment to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park in Saskatoon. The award honours “innovative achievements in education that builds capacity for sustainable development in Saskatchewan and that help contribute to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030). ”

It was an honour to have the opportunity to share our story among these amazing organisations leading the way to make a difference in sustainability, thank you to RCE Saskatchewan Education for Sustainable Development and congratulations to all of the award recipients for inspiring others through your work.

Thank you to Robert White, ecologist for the time and knowledge in tweaking and preparing the speech, and offering to present on behalf of the board of directors at the ceremony. Thank you also to Beth Adamson, meteorolgist, for being on board and offering support should it be needed.

It is true we are calmer, and much more relaxed after spending some time in nature. How can one measure the benefits of improved mental health. During these uncertain times, it is easy to feel stressed and feel anxiety, irritable, and have related ailments like indigestion, insomnia, headaches. There are layoffs, insecurities about health and wellness, finances, education, new changes to lifestyle.

Make A Wish Day

Anxious thoughts give rise to panic attacks where our innate natural instinct is “fight of flight.” Because our body is taking action to react to the emergency by fleeing or fighting for it’s survival, our rational thinking mind suppresses our instinct to live in a civilized society.
An amazing relief can be found be indulging in “flight.” Just taking off for a walk, bicycle ride or jog in nature will help your body acknowledge that the its survival instinct is no longer needed, and that it is safe, and you can relax now.
Of course, one must appease the thinking mind as well as the body. If the conventions are followed for COVID-10 when out in nature, and 6 feet (2 meters) are maintained for social distancing, both mind and body can relax so that worries, and stress are alleviated.
Focusing on nature brings about a change, and for panic attacks, a change is as good as a rest.
As you wander about watching spring change into summer, be happy. Listen to the meadowlark singing. Laugh at the red squirrels chattering away. From a distance, smile and wave at the next walker passing by.
Take care of yourself today. Watch as the elm trees burst into flower, and it is truly a good day. Though everyone must social isolate to prevent COVID-19 from spreading, remember you are not alone.

Day to day environmental learning, tidbits of information posted every day during Earth Month. Unfortunately with great thought it is wise to reduce suffering, so our planned spring outdoor gatherings have been cancelled to respect the COVID-19 protocols so as to not put people at risk in group gatherings – postponed are the bio-blitzes, scavenger hunts, tours, and Clean Green Community Scene volunteer cleanup. We are adding to our website daily online activities for the month of April which involve interaction, education and awareness about Earth Month with a focus on the Earth Month Theme Climate Change.
