Park identification sign commemorating
George Genereux Urban Regional Park
Thank you to the Meewasin for getting signs fabricated, inspiration on design, and the installation of the signs. This was a joint project between the and the installation of the signs. This was a joint project between the Meewasin, City of Saskatoon and the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. with financial support from the Government of Canada Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The wording on the sign follows:
This 60 hectare natural habitat is home to many plants, birds and wildlife. It is now a protected area named in honour of a Saskatoon gold medal Olympian, George Genereux. He is remembered for successful endeavours, even with his crippling disability (Ankylosing Spondylitis), to become a professor of radiology, an in-demand North American speaker, meticulous illustrator of some renown and created an amazing series of books before his death as a co-author.
George Genereux Urban Regional Park was one of several parcels of farmland purchased in 1960 under a far-sighted plan to establish a greenbelt around Saskatoon. Tree planting, linked with the Green Survival Program promoted by the nursery trade, was initiated in 1972. It is the smaller of two areas remaining from the afforestation plan.
