Today try a recycling activity such as making these beautiful recycled magazine butterflies! Maybe you would like to make an entire garland of butterflies. It is one origami project which will be great to try, and you can even try it from newspapers or adverts.

Another great project which is great for recycling is to create a re-usable face mask. Use of cloth face coverings to help slow the spread of COVID-19 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Homemade Sew and No Sew Instructions). Canada’s chief public health officer -Theresa Tam- now says that wearing a non-medical mask can help stop the spread of COVID-19. Be careful out there!

DIY Earth day wildflower seed bombs are another great project for today. They are fun, and great ways to plant, just by throwing! Try making native berry bush seed bombs, and planting trees, and well the possibilities are endless for planting native seeds.

Next Generation Climate Change worksheets , Next Generation curriculum and Climate Generation Curricula are great food for thought. Check them out.

Sir George William Ross adapted the Arbor Day Manual with tree planting songs for school children. The classroom curriculum from Patriot Recitations and Arbor Day Exercises adopted poems for the children to recite for each tree species chosen to be planted on Arbor Day. Try to cultivate Joy and Wonder. For instance, the pupil for his recitation may say;” I love the pine. tt stands up so straight and tall, that it looks like a king among trees. I have two verses to the pine by James Russell Lowell:

‘Mid thy snow-silvered, hushed precipices,
Hearing crags of green ice grown and splinter,

In keeping with the Earth Month Climate Action theme, there are ways to have pets, and take action on climate change. A very simple way according to Verge is to change over your pet’s kibble to a plant based protein formula. Dr. Mercola also advises to “Kick all Kibble to the Curb” suggesting to “incorporate a variety of fresh foods into your pet’s diet, too. Blueberries, chia and hemp seeds in coconut oil, raw pumpkin seeds, fermented vegetables and kefir. Dogs Naturally advises to consider healthy ways of using plant proteins, and soak, rinse or ferment all legumes first to reduce the lectin content. Lindsay Nixon mentions, that she feeds her dogs [pre-soaked or pressure cooked] brown rice with a “base of lentils [also pre-soaked or pressure cooked], with bell pepper, cucumber, yellow squash, cabbage, lettuce and cauliflower, plus some leftover rice.”

We have to change how we produce and consume food, not just for environmental reasons, but because this is an existential issue for humans.

Adopt the pace of nature

During this COVID-19 pandemic, take some time during Earth Month this April to learn what makes these afforestation areas so special. This online resource allows one to follow COVID-19 protocols, and stay home while still experiencing nature. The Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan talks about the trembling aspen, white spruce and balsam poplar, trees of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park. Trembling Aspen is quite unique during a very short time span in the spring. These clones of trees in the aspen bluff will flower, and thus, the astute observer can determine whether that particular clone is female or male. These afforestation areas planted in 1972 made use of drought resistant, hardy tree species recommended by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) as the afforestation areas were started as tree nurseries for the City of Saskatoon Parks. The trees, now much too large to transplant, have created two urban regional parks.

APRIL 19, 2020 marks the beginning of SKY AWARENESS WEEK.

The afforestation areas were started as city tree nurseries under the banner of the Green Survival Program. The Green Survival Programwas concerned about ecology abuse, and pollution, providing planting, and greening up the planet, with a motto, “It’s up to you!”

Clouds in the sky

While practicing the art of self-isolation, and social distancing for COVID-19, take in the art of nephelococcygia. Nephelococcygia is simply laying back for the pleasure of seeking and finding shapes in clouds.

Can you draw, or paint the shapes which you find? When you do create a picture, would anyone ever believe, that really the clouds looked like that on that day?

As you look up at the clouds, consider how clouds form. Learn how to classify clouds at the PBS Nova Cloud Lab.

Did you know that Air pollution drops as countries shut down amid spread of COVID-19 and India’s coronavirus lockdown is having a dramatic impact on pollution? Just as all the COVID-19 protocols meant that people stepped up and practiced various measures for their own personal safety, and the collective safety of friends and families, so too, it is important to save the habitats around the world from sky – and air pollution. What measures can you take to make sure that your grandchildren will be able to practice nephelococcygia? Where can you lower your carbon footprint? Can you change vehicles? Can you change the way your home or business sets its carbon footprint? Contemplate how to keep your air and sky pollution low with the same earnestness and passion devoted to COVID-19. Can you plant a tree? Actually can you plant a forest? What an amazing method forests and trees are to help reduce the carbon footprint around the world.

Recycling Plastic, Glass and Paper

Where are some places in Saskatoon where you can recycle? If you have clothing, toys, and household items you are not using anymore, where can you take them? Perhaps a thrift store! How many are there in Saskatoon? If you have an appliance you no longer use, what can you do with a used appliance? Do you know where the used appliance re-sale stores are in Saskatoon? Do you know where the metal recycling places are? Do you know you can post on KIJIJI and Craig’s List for free? There are people who would love your old fence to use as firewood! Just post for a pick up of your items. Comment with as many verious ways to recycle as you can think of.

Saturday April 18 marks the last week-end before the 50th Anniversary Earth Day celebration April 22, 2020! This year’s Earth Day 2020 theme is Climate Action, which will be explored during Earth Month.

Guess what? There will be a community cleanup of George Genereux Urban Regional Park coming up! What an opportunity to protect the environment in an urban regional park for users and for the semi-wilderness habitat!
