Are you an experienced Cultural and Environmental Heritage Writer who is passionate about reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons?

We are looking for a creative writer to help us with the interpretation of the Prairie Forest Guide app and review of existing content and research. This app provides an opportunity for cross-cultural learning and understanding of the land and its history, and to support reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons.

The ideal candidate should be knowledgeable about the local Indigenous culture, history, and geography. They should also be able to research and fact-check the interpretation of the app, ensuring accuracy in its content.

The successful candidate will be a creative and detail-oriented individual who is passionate about reconciliation and cross-cultural learning. They should have excellent writing and research skills and be able to work independently and collaboratively.

Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide app editor

Are you passionate about environmental and cultural heritage prairie forests? Do you have a deep understanding of the history and importance of these lands for Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples?

We are looking for a skilled and experienced Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide app editor to join our team. This position will involve creating content for a GPS interpretive app that helps promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons regarding perspectives on the land and provides the opportunity for cross-cultural learning about these lands and their history.

We are looking for an editor who is passionate about the history and significance of these lands, and has experience in researching, writing, and editing content. The editor should be familiar with the cultural and environmental heritage of prairie forests, and have a strong understanding of the unique relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

The editor will need to be able to work with a variety of stakeholders, including Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, to create content that is both educational and engaging. The editor should have excellent organizational skills, be able to work independently and as part of a team, and be able to manage multiple projects at once.

The Power and Magic of iNat

” iNaturalist has been employing computer vision models trained on iNaturalist data to provide automated species identification assistance to iNaturalist participants”. Ken-ichi Ueda “In 2008, Ken-ichi Ueda and several other students at the University of California, Berkeley, founded iNaturalist as an online community for biologists, citizen scientists and people who simply enjoyed observing wildlife.”[source] The magic begins when computer vision – image recognition technology combines with computer or machine learning. By 2017, the iNaturalist app had over 5 million ‘verifiable’ observations uploaded, of which 100,000 were classified to species level. In 2017, a new species could be identified on iNaturalist every 1.7 hours. [source] This opens the door to discovering more about ranges, phenology, the impacts of climate change, neighbouring localities. Further to this, iNaturalist has a world wide collaboration of citizen scientists working with specialists to weigh in on the magic of iNaturalist to fine tune and improve the model we are working with. Climb inside the skin of our native wildlife. Learn about the habitat for our herons, and where they might live as our cities grow larger and larger. Climb into the skin of a native butterfly and where they may fly to find a native pollinator flower that is not covered in pesticides. Climb inside the skin of the last remaining mammals and where they may live.

Volunteer with the City Nature Challenge. A great way to study range expansion and contraction, seasonal changes in morphology, the declining or increasing numbers of species at risk or invasive species. By observing local nature, everyone can support vital conservation research while connecting with nature and enjoying the outdoors.

George Genereux Park – Connect with Nature

Here’s a great opportunity for you, your family and your friends to connect with nature while taking part in an international event designed to track biodiversity.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas are hosting an event on Fri., 29 April 2022 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm Central Standard Time at George Genereux Urban Regional Park Range Road 3063 Saskatoon, SK S0K 1V0

The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is an annual event run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Since launching in 2016, the CNC has grown into an international event that inspires people around the world to find and document wildlife and birds (flora and fauna) in their cities. Last year over 419 cities in 44 countries participated, including 26 Canadian cities from coast to coast. The Canadian Wildlife Federation hosts the Canada wide City Nature Challenge, and the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Area hosts the Saskatoon area City Nature Challenge. It’s a friendly challenge to see which city can gather the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most people. Last year participants tracked over 1 million observations!

The CNC is a fun, simple, and family-friendly event that’s easy to execute and can easily fit within public health guidelines. Using the free downloadable app found at iNaturalist.ca, people can search for and document their local biodiversity simply by taking pictures and uploading them through the app or online. It’s a wonderful way to get local area residents involved in a “citizen science” event that contributes to an international database of biodiversity.

The CNC 2022 event takes place April 29 – May 2, and we would welcome involvement from you, your friends, your family. Anyone can participate in the CNC, and inspiring people to explore local green spaces and natural habitats has added benefits, including developing a record of local wildlife or finding invasive species. If you are sitting at a baseball game outside, and see a fly flittering by, take a photo of it with iNaturalist loaded on your camera. If you see a ladybug wandering past as you sit at a soccer game, take a photo of it with the iNaturalist app. As you are walking your puppy dog, and your pet sniffs a beetle, take a picture with the iNaturalist app, there are so many opportunities!

Your involvement will also showcase Saskatoon’s commitment to biodiversity and conservation.

National Forest Week The last full week of September. Maple Leaf Day the Wednesday of that week.

This program for National Forest Week is brought to you by the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas an environmental non-profit charity that was created to preserve and restore the 326-acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the 148-acre George Genereux Urban Regional Park. Our work reinforces the 1979 City Council decision designating these afforestation areas on the western fringe of Saskatoon to “be preserved in perpetuity.” They are important habitat for wildlife as well as semi-wild public spaces for recreation and nature immersion. The larger of these two areas is named after Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889-1982), who has been called the “first global conservationist” and in recognition of this he was made the first Honorary Life Member of the World Wildlife Fund in 1969. A British forester who also homesteaded and studied in Saskatoon, he dedicated his entire life unfailingly to the preservation and planting of trees and forests.

Connect with nature, find out what is really in the forest! What will you discover? Come out and explore George Genereux Park. This event provides a snapshot of nature, ecology and the environment out at George Genereux Park in Saskatoon. It shows how healthy the environment is. It is great for young, families, youth groups. botanists, and the general public to have fun in nature. It sharpens your “Where’s Waldo?” skills and helps to become aware of your surroundings. Caterpillars, butterflies, birds, mushrooms, flowers, squirrels, are all various life forms to take pictures of with the iNaturalist app downloaded on your smart phone. It is amazing just how many of the bio-blitzes undertaken have found another species at risk to be aware of in the afforestation areas.

What in the world is a bio-blitz?

A Bio-Blitz is time spent looking for life (bio) in the form of mushrooms, plants, animals, and insects. Another word for Bio-Blitz is Eco-Quest. Here the word Eco-Quest refers to an investigation or a quest to explore what is living in the habitat or environment, or what makes up the eco-system of the area.

Bio-Blitzes or Eco-Quests are ways to connect with nature, become more observant of the surroundings, and discover the world of the afforestation areas.

There is a deep interconnectedness of all life on earth, from the tiniest organisms, to the largest ecosystems, and absolutely between each person.
