In case you haven’t guessed, we extoll the amazing possiblities of the exciting Take a Wild Guess Day! This April 15 special day is all about trusting your gut and your instinct. Does the thought of taking a wild guess without any information to back you up take you way, way out of your comfort zone?
“iNaturalist Etiquette: A Guide to Engaging with Nature and Community”
Did you know that it is wonderful to engage in iNaturalist etiquette? When out in the field making an observation, the iNaturalist app’s computer recognition technology suggests identifications for what you’ve observed. Similarly, for naturalists tuning into iNaturalist on their home computers, it’s amazing to engage with your observations and be an armchair naturalist for others too!
“From Books to Apps: Nurturing Our Curiosity About the World”
From our earliest infant picture books to our grade one science curriculum, our parents and teachers have been helping us identify the difference between plants and animals, insects and spiders, mushrooms and moss, birds and trees! We all have a rudimentary knowledge of the world around us. Please “Be Bold” and join the iNaturalist community. Welcome newcomers, be bold in your identifications, and enjoy the incredible journey of discovery.
“Building a Global Community: iNaturalist as a Social Network for Nature Enthusiasts”
iNaturalist has built-in social networking for conversations between people worldwide to make and discuss various identifications. It’s easy! If you think you know what something is, say so! The iNaturalist community process is all about sharing knowledge and supporting each other’s curiosity.
It is as invigorating as a crossword puzzle sorting out the clues, but the clues you will use are the organism features to travel from the kingdom to species level! Your help and participation aids in science research globally, helps track species at risk locally, helps with early detection and rapid response on invasive species, and inventories our wildlife locally!
Embrace Take a Wild Guess Day and explore the unpredictable wonders of nature. Join the iNaturalist community, engage in the thrill of discovery, and trust your instincts. Watch this YouTube video “Identifications for iNaturalist” for more inspiration on how to take the leap into the wild world of guesses and observations!
