Clean up Thank You!

We wish to give a heartfelt round of thank you to everyone, and all those from around Saskatoon who cleaned up the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area [west side] and all those people who helped with the clean up at George Genereux Urban Regional Park on Saturday October 3. An amazing job was done at both urban regional parks in the City of Saskatoon making them a great deal safer and much more enjoyable as we admire the amazing autumn colours of the forest. This is indeed a city we can be proud of! Clean ups are instantaneous ways of creating a visible and tangible difference in the protection of our city’s environment.

The first Monday of October, Monday October 5 is World Habitat Day, and truly, what an amazing difference to the habitat of the semi-wilderness areas out at George Genereux Urban Regional park and at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area! Thank you kindly again for everyone who came out!

Thanks kindly to Shell Station at 11th Street and Dawes Avenue, Petro Canada on 11th Street and Witney Avenue, Boston Pizza Blairmore, Poor Boys Gas and Food Bar 11th Street and Sk Hwy 7 and Canadian Tire Confederation. These corporations indeed helped with the clean up of October 3, 2020 at George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

Additionally the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc., City of Saskatoon, Meewasin Valley Authority, Fatlanders Fatbike Brigade Inc. , residents from the City of Saskatoon all showed up alongside a journalist who all took part in the clean up occurring on October 3, 2020.

Please be aware that the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux have some magnificent and beautiful elm trees. Please follow guidelines for pruning, and please dispose of any elm leaves and branches in bags for the landfill. Thanks very much

In Appreciation to NoFrills Westgate Plaza

Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza went above and beyond helping out on Saturday September 19 with the George Genereux Urban Regional Park Clean up. They did indeed help to make the day a success with a generous contribution. Support such is this by Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza is vital, and so much appreciated by the volunteers who all came out that day, and also by the public users of this urban regional park who have noticed and commented on the outstanding difference that the clean up has made. Parents with small children, bird banders, foresters, dog walkers, and citizen scientists all meet out at George Genereux Urban Regional Park and appreciate that over 9,270Kg or 9.27 tons or 10.2 US tons or 204,367 pounds have been removed from the forest. This has created a much safer environment for the general public and for the health of the environment. Is that not what World Environmental Health day is all about? Know that so many people appreciate the kindness and generosity of Ivan and Ila and Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza which is located at 2410 22nd St W at the corner of Avenue W North and 22nd St W. The clean up on Sat. Sept 19 ushered in National Forest week, and what an amazing way to care for forests than to protect the environment. And Ivan and Ila helped to act locally and think globally on World Clean up Day which also was Sat. Sept 19. Isn’t it ever so wonderful to have safe urban regional parks?

How can you be thankful to your community? Have you gone out of your way to profess a heartfelt thank you to someone who has made a difference in your community? What of the countless people who make the city safe, and beautiful? Have you extended a word of thanks to those who keep your parks area verdant and the heart of your community. The Urban Forestry Program, takes care of those trees which remove pollutants from our air, creating a wondrous city free of smog.

What is it that makes a good city excellent? Shops, entertainment, shelter are among some readily picked choices.

However, is not the public park, the place where childhood memories made? Just as a healthy frog serves as an indicator of a thriving environment, does not a good park serve as measure of a world class city?

What is the difference between a park and a parking lot? Well most people agree, that a good and blissful public park has lots of trees, wetlands, and fresh fragrant woodland and meadow air. A great park has safety, and provides a sanctuary to interact within the neighbourhood, and meet new people A perfect setting for a picnic, events, recreation, and general happiness and relaxation to everyone in the neighbourhood. A wide variety of cultural events embrace musicians, yoga groups, bicycle trips, bird watchers, the young and the old.

Perhaps you bring your kids to run and play! Or maybe your dogs need to sniff and get some mental exercise. Your camera might need to be taken out of the box and out for a leisurely walk. Perhaps your son or daughter has ADHD or is autistic, and what better sense of achievement that a stroll or bicycle ride down a forest path for physical health and mental healing? A teacher may use the path to teach their students about the environment. The public park is a place for fellowship, health and wellbeing for one and all where can everyone find a safe place in nature as Saskatoon grows to a booming population of one million!

However it works for you, be thankful for your park. Its not every city that has a healthy ecosystem embracing grasslands, woodlands and wetlands.

This spring, the Crocus and Purple Avens, the harbringers of spring, have already come and gone to seed across the prairies. The Buffalo Bean is shining its last burst of yellow. May is coming to and end, and June roses are soon coming to bloom. In the Afforestation area, a single Siberian Crab Apple is blooming pale pink. The grove of Golden Elders, have also just about finished their blooming season. It has been a beautiful spring, the city gardens awash in the fragrance of lilacs.

What is new at the South West Sector Afforestation Areas? There are now addresses!!! City addresses, to communicate say a “grass fire” started from a bolt of lighting to emergency service personnel, to meet other skiers at the afforestation area or dog walkers at the SW off leash recreation area or to let others know where the Golden Elders are, or where you spotted a deer, there are now addresses!!!

Ian Williamson, MCIP, RPP, Senior Planner 21 of the City of Saskatoon Regional & Long Range Planning has sent out information in regards to Civic addresses to the afforestation areas within the southwest portion of the city.

Clean, Green Community Scene!

It all adds up, indeed. Good deeds such as cleaning up the community parks are truly contagious

It looks like a fantastic day for the clean up scheduled at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area on Saturday, July 9, 2016, indeed! The honourable Councillor Pat Lorje, who has done so much for the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area already, will come out to the community volunteer clean up day. As well as representatives from the Meewasin Valley Authority will also bring Meewasin greetings! The Saskatoon Singing Circle, an affiliate of the Sacred Web Singers will arrive to bring some great tree songs to the volunteers in appreciation of the wonderful works to restore the forest.

The Saskatoon Community Public Health Nurse will take care of any safety concerns, and the Saskatoon City Police Community Liason Constable has also been involved with the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area clean up site inspection.

There has been an amazing response from the business and corporate community, and prizes will be randomly drawn at the end of the shifts a fantastic opportunity to offer to the volunteers appreciations for their time offered at the clean up! Remember to pick up your certificate as well before leaving, we truly wish to thank you kindly for coming out and participating.

Additionally, the weather looks like it will cooperate, so all in all, it looks like a very promising day to see immediate and tangible results from trash removal to restore the forest. It is so exciting to look forward to a public space where children, youth, and adults can gather to appreciate the forest in tidy and sanitary conditions. There is no doubt about it, protecting nature, wildlife and wild places is a great environmental community project. Cleaning the waterways and the riparian forest, protects animals, birds, fish, and plant life from the contamination that litter brings. The clean up also sends a powerful message to users of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, that someone cares about this piece of land and the West Swale wetlands, and that this is not the right area to dump their unwanted trash.

There will data cards for this summer Great Canadian Shoreline “Scavenger Hunt” to record just what has been dumped in this amazing forest. Large jugs of water and juices will be available to replenish the water bottles you bring along. Remember your cloth canvas gloves. Gardening gloves or work gloves work much better than plastic or rubber gloves. If plastic or rubber gloves are needed, they will be supplied. Wear you closed toe shoes and footwear and come dressed for the weather which looks like a grand day for the cleanup which is fantastic!

We truly look forward to meeting you at the South West Off Leash Recreation Area parking lot at 8:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 for the Clean, Green Community Scene. You will have the opportunity to meet like-minded people, and possibly start great friendships. Everyone who comes out will have a great sense of accomplishment, pride and stewardship of the environment. An important benefit of the clean up will be reduced pollution in the West Swale wetlands which directly impact the South Saskatchewan River.
The clean up will have the following impact

Eco Friendly Grant Appreciation

Thanks to funding received from Andrew and Penny of Eco-Friendly Saskatchewan we are able to embark on the second Anniversary “Clean-Up Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area” Service Project. With the very kind collaboration users of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, Community Associations, and Saskatoon green groups, and bicycle groups, and concerned citizens are the many and several volunteers who have been responding to help out. A progress report of “before” and “after” photos needs to be sent to Andrew and Penny once our Clean up day, July 9, 2016, is completed. They will share our report and photos on their website as well as social media – so please send lots of great photos to StBarbeBaker@yahoo.com, please and thank you! Also if you have any great stories about using the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area please send them in to be posted online!

To help protect the environment, it will be best to find a way to avoid the use of disposable cups and bottle at event. Please bring a water bottle and/ or travel mug to the clean up event as disposable cups and disposable bottles will not be available for use.
