Today, a fantastic day to celebrate Earth Day! EarthDay.org advocates hat we all take action, whether to become a citizen scientist, reduce-reuse-recycle or have a plant-based meal.

“The world’s problem, is not a population explosion, but animal explosion. We’ve got to decide whether we are going to feed animals or humans. To feed animals is a roundabout way of getting food. It takes 18 times more land to feed people on beef than on vegetables, nuts fruits and grains.” Richard St. Barbe Baker.

Earth Day Canada has a campaign #TakeCareOfThePlanet! Doesn’t that sound like the best idea ever. There are more ideas of how to become involved in Earth Day.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. encourages everyone to take care of the Earth, by caring for the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park with our own local campaign #TakeCareOfTheAfforestationAreas! Don’t cut elm in the park. Encourage everyone to reduce, reuse and recycle then we may not see quite so much trash illegally deposited in the forest. Participate in volunteer clean up days, or don’t wait….pick up an item of trash next time you are on a walk. If everyone picked up one or two items of trash, there would soon be none at all 😉

Climate Action Today and Everyday

Climate Action Day!

What does Climate Action Day mean to you. We just got through St. Patrick’s Day with the wearing of the green, and trying Irish cuisine. But, now today, we need to reflect and not just wear green for St. Patrick’s Day but contemplate Climate Action Day, and what we as individuals may do to celebrate and take action on Climate change.

Alan Silverman at the Star says, “Following the lead of the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, many Toronto youth — under the banner of Fridays for Future — are calling on our governments to forcefully address the climate emergency. The theme is “no more empty promises.”

Jens Marquardt, a postdoctoral researcher in climate change politics and societal transformation at Stockholm University. mentioned that “It is actually quite astonishing to see that this [FFF] movement has been so resilient and robust, despite this massive crisis. This year of reflection has been helpful in shaping the agenda about what this movement is about and what this movement wants to achieve in the future.”[source]

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Climate Action states that “The outcome document of the Rio+20 Conference, the Future We Want, underscores climate change as “an inevitable and urgent global challenge with long-term implications for the sustainable development of all countries”

Today commit to cut CO2 emissions by driving and travelling less via combustible engine vehicles. Find a means to participate in active transportation. Take a bus or even car pooling is better than one driver per vehicle. Go cross country skiing, walking, running, cycling, skateboarding, snowshoing to get from place to place.

Hang your clothing out on a clothes line.

Today reduce, reuse, recycle take action on waste reduction.

And it doesn’t hurt to think green and engage in nature based solutions to climate change today. Plant a tree this summer. Better yet plant ten trees, take care of trees everywhere and do a good deed every day, as Richard St. Barbe Baker would say

Walk Lightly on the Earth

Global Recycling Day is very important when it comes to thinking about the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas. Members of the public, South West Off Leash Recreation Area dog walkers, the Stewards and Stakeholders of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, The Fatlanders Fat Tire Brigade, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. all have come out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and to George Genereux Urban Regional Park for “Clean Green Community Scene” volunteer clean ups to restore these urban regional parks to amazing winter wonderland green spaces which are enjoyed all year around.

Recycling is so, so very important when you see what was collected during the various clean up days. There were toys which would have been so much appreciated by another family. Clothing was discarded in the urban regional park which could have been put to much better use. Very environmentally hazardous items were discarded like flammable oil and tires which are very disastrous in a greenspace. Furniture would have been much better displayed in someone’s home rather than being ruined by ticks, rain, mice, and other vermin in the forest.

Did you know the City of Saskatoon has some amazing recycling programs?

We can compost at the compost areas in town.

SARCAN has newspaper and cardboard depots

Citizens can recycle paint, and electronics at SARCAN along with their bottles, and cans.

Residents can take in clothing, toys, household or garage items to a number of thrift stores

Furniture is welcome at many thrift and second hand stores also

Metal appliances can be turned in for cash

Did you know that the City of Saskatoon landfill also has an eco-centre? Used oil, antifreeze, oil filters and diesel exhaust fluid can make use of the eco-centre

The City of Saskatoon has arranged an amazing landfill so the residents do not get typhoid and diptheria! And we should use it rather than the environment.

The City of Saskatoon also collaborates with Community Associations for spring/fall community clean ups to help residents if they see litter accumulating in the neighbourhood which is amazing for sure. Cleaning up their parks, and streets, and alleyways is a great way to have a safe and healthy neighbourhood for our children to grow up in.

Everyone, everywhere is inextricably linked

“Wetlands as the ‘kidneys’ of the earth are the site or ‘organ’ where the life-giving vitality of water is generated and stored.  Both are places of the life-giving flow of water, not of foul stagnancy.  In Chines cosmology and medicine the liver is associated with wood, and ‘in wood the sap must flow’ or else the tree will die just as in the body of the earth water must flow or the earth will die” is related by Rod Giblett.

Grasslands ‘account for between 20-20% of the world’s land area’.  Skin is the ‘human body’s largest organ’ accounting for 16% of a body’s weight.

The trees ‘are often recognized as the ‘lungs of the world’ because they exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the atmosphere’.

The eco-system is inter-twined.  “When the trees go, the rain goes, the climate deteriorates, the water table sinks, the land erodes and desert conditions soon appear”.~Richard St. Barbe Baker

Today is Saturday April 11, and 11 days from Earth Day April 22. This year’s Earth Day 2020 theme is Climate Action.  Chemicals, and polluted lands affect our earth and vegetation growth.  Everything in the soil, affects the food we eat, as the roots dig deep into the soil for sustenance.  Pollution in the water contaminates our drinking water, the drinking water for all wildlife, fish and waterfowl.  The plants and vegetation also draw up the water from the water table.  Air pollution affects not only  our lungs, but the respiratory system of plants and animals.  The human actions affect the earth in so many ways.  The industrial revolution has impacted everything, and society has changed to a throw away culture.  No longer do we mend, repair, fix and re-use as our ancestors did.  During the COVID-19 epidemic if you were self-isolating for 14 days or longer, it was a time of not running to the store every time you were short of something.  Remember to refuse – don’t buy and buy and buy, consider if it is needed.  Then only buy the items with the least packaging and packaging which can be recycled. Find a used appliance dealer, second hand clothing store, for items you no longer need.  Always re-cycle, let someone else use your gently used item.   Reduce all your energy devices which are using carbon fuels, use renewable energy, energy saving devices.  Go back in time, and hang your clothing on the clothes line rather than using the dryer.  Try active transportation rather than using a vehicle.  Active transportation can be bicycles, walking, skiing, skateboarding, or any other human powered means of locomotion.

So, have  you noticed gas prices have gone down during these days of dealing with COVID-19?  Great timing, when the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) protocol is to just stay  home, and not go anywhere  ?#$!? (Great for climate change, though!)

There may be a lot of anxiety, fear and worry about the issues around climate change, and how to save the planet.  Shannon Subers, says when people get overwhelmed they tend to shut down, fear, and panic sets in.  A little humour about climate change helps here and there!    Today is Friday April 3, and we are on the third day of Earth Month. This year’s Earth Day 2020 theme is Climate Action.

150 Hour Zero Waste Challenge

Can you do a 150 hour Zero Waste Challenge for Canada’s 150 Birthday?

Can you do a 150 hour Zero Waste Challenge for Canada’s 150 Birthday?

In other words for 150 hours can you not use a trash can at all.  Plan your groceries without any trash to throw away – recycle or compost everything not eaten.  Plan your shopping for minimisation.  Try to purchase those items which have been re-cycled or re-purposed.  Ensure any and all packaging can be re-cycled.  What else can you do for your lifestyle?  What revelations will you become aware of as you endeavour to become “Waste Free”?

If you succeed with your trash can lid taped shut for 150 hours, maybe you can try 150 days!!!  Draw your attention to 150 hours, what are your consumer habits that support waste, and which demand choices tdo you make which are “Waste Free”?

150 hours:  Monday at 6:00 a.m.  to Sunday at 12:00 noon.

If you want to try 150 days “Waste Free” then today is June 10, 2017 so that means that 150 days from today would be November 7, 2017.   150 Days From Now

So there it is for the 150th Anniversary of Canada, take the “Waste Free” challenge.

Bea Johnson suggests these steps to be successful:

1. Refuse
2. Reduce
3. Reuse
4. Recycle
5. Rot

What does Johnson know about Zero Waste?  Johnson’s family of four lived an entire year, and their waste for the entire month fit into a one quart canning jar.

What will be your reward for completing the challenge?

You will conserve Canada’s resources, and minimize pollution.

Zero Waste builds community with surplus consumer goods donated to food banks, second hand clothing stores, shelters.  Composting at community gardens build social networking and support

Zero Waste creates new jobs, as products are repaired, recycled and re-furbished.

Zero Waste saves money as consumers demand less packaging, and more serviceable, and durable products.  Consumer demand for products when can be recycled creates a circular economy.

Zero Waste creates a healthier lifestyle and economy.  Eating organic, eating locally so food does not have to be transported, eating without waste, modifies the diet to healthy choices.

Zero Waste protects the environment, preserving resources and biospheres for future generations.
