End of Day 2 Results.

So, the City Nature Challenge has come halfway, day 2 of 4 days.

What a ride it has been! Let’s recap again about some highlights.

So when you want to check out how Saskatoon and area is faring there are two counters. One is on iNaturalist here. The other scoreboard is here, as the Saskatoon City Nature Challenge signed up to BioSmart.

What is the difference? Well BioSmart shows the addition of both iNaturalist and eBird observations! In two days this is how Saskatoon and area has fared on BioSmart;

So that is pretty sweet! Hats off to everyone.

The ever beautiful Crocus Pulsatilla nuttalliana has been recorded today as an observation!

There has been an observation of a “Puccinia monoica (Rust Fungus) that infects prairie plants in early spring, usually species of Rock Cress (Boechera/Arabis)” (the description given by Glen Lee)

There are no more white rabbit sightings, only brown White-tailed Jackrabbits *whew*.

Some very beautiful Wintergreens are making a carpet of green which is ever wonderful to see.

If you have never seen a wondrous Spring Avens, well they are in bud now, so that is pretty cool!

But besides saying what is recorded, we should mention what is NOT recorded. There are NO pelican sightings recorded yet! And yet we know they arrived April 21! NO beaver nor muskrat sightings. So now the race is on, to see who can get the first pelican, beaver and muskrat sighting! Can you do it? Check on eBird Saskatoon for end of April usual bird sightings, and then it will be discovered what there may be to look for still 😉

Out of all the potential birds of prey around and about Saskatoon which may be sighted such as hawks, owls, vultures, only two have been registered to date = a Turkey Vulture, and a Merlin.

You know what is a rather unique and interesting happenstance of the City Nature Challenge? iNat user svetlana-bogdanovich out of Ukraine has made the most observations! So in the middle of war-torn Ukraine, svetlana has made 505 observations in 2 days! That is pretty incredible.

User eduardoramirez-anapri from Madrid Spain has made 444 observations in the first 2 days.

Nearing the end of the first day of the CNCYXE2022!

Nearing the end of day one of the City Nature Challenge. Quite a few waterfowl are back, and a lovely array of dark-eyed junco are seen. Some amazing pictures making the scene, two turkey vultures soaring overhead, and a cute playful North American River Otter peeking out of the water giving a smile! A mourning cloak butterfly loved the warm weather today. So these are just some tidbits of what has been seen during the Saskatoon City Nature Challenge! And the rabbits cannot make up their mind. A white rabbit was seen and a brown rabbit, so will we get more snow or not. Usually the color of the rabbits confirm spring once they are brown. The songs of the songbirds is quite amazing and what a treat for International Dawn Chorus Day which is the first Sunday of May! Our hint for the CNCYXE2022, remember to record the songs of the songbirds! Take photos of seeds and pine cones on the ground. Remember the trees are starting to flower. Bugs are just waiting to peek out if you move some of the leaves on the ground. The CNCYXE is very important this year. Citizen Scientists can document if the Avian flu is affecting our bird population. What will you see?

Arbor Day!

Today! Today is Arbor Day, May 22. Celebrate!!!

For our virtual Arbor Day activity today is to consider your unique story. (besides planting trees privately at your home 😉

Consider the many ways in which trees have impacted your life, besides supplying life giving oxygen for you to breathe, and purifying the air.

Your story adventure could be happiness is strolling through the forest with your puppy.

Or perhaps you story will be sinking your teeth into a juicy apple, or some yummy Saskatoon berries fresh from the tree. Have you found the Saskatoons and apple tree at the afforestation area yet?

Another great story may be the willow catkins you find which herald that spring arrives alongside the arrival of Robin and Meadowlark.

Another great forest story may be the time hiking through the woods and you discover deer or rabbit, fawn or duckling. Did you know many ducks nest on the ground, so be careful with your puppies in the spring nesting season.

There is so much to be grateful to forests about.

What is your story about why trees and forests are special to you?

There are three amazing ways you can show your appreciation for the afforestation areas:

1) Download theiNaturalist app on your smart phone, and take pictures of the plants and animals. This shows the amazing value of the forests, and is a wonderful way to increase your love of the forests as it increases your observation skills to the wonders which about in nature.

2) Support the 2020 Green Vision master plan. If you are unable to make a financial gift during these weird crazy, and uncertain times, please know that there are many ways you can help. You can advocate for us by sharing our vision and our purpose with a family member or friend. Even a quick mention or a share on your social media would be every so awesome.

3) The other thing is that with SARCAN closed right now, we can pick up your bottles and recycling on our virtual bottle drive. We cannot come to you door to door, but if you call us, we can arrange a safe pick up, and it is a win-win! So many are taking part in COVID-19 cleanups around their home and yard, and what a better time to save the environment, and recycle safely and remove the stinky piles and piles of bottles, while saving the afforestation area too for students, and classrooms, and endangered species!!! Wow! We are so close to installation of Jersey Barriers, with just a little more fundraising, we can level the ground under them!! Can you help, please?

Saskatoon: World Tourism Day

If you have not visited already, please come to Saskatoon for

September 27, an amazing autumn day with the spectacular colour of golden leaves gracing the river bank, after reveling in a glorious summer season with balmy temperatures from Easter through to October. Yet check out what Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada has to offer as a fantastic #WinterCityYXE. Any time of year is fantastic to visit the city of Saskatoon.

Seth Sherwood, New York Times, writes of Saskatoon; “Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and other heavyweight 20th-century artists now have a home in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, thanks to the new Remai Modern museum. ”

Do indeed, when arriving in Saskatoon, check out the Remai Modern museum, and relax along the South Saskatchewan River Valley with its amazing beaches especially those at Sutherland Beach, Chief Whitecap Park [Chief Whitecap Waterway], Fred Heal Canoe Launch [Map] and Poplar Bluffs Conservation Area.

While visiting Saskatoon [YXE] don’t forget to check out the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, and the George Genereux Urban Regional Park, for a walk amidst the trees and snap a photograph of a deer, squirrel, Black-crowned Night–Heron or bunny rabbit [for example] on your saunter.

Does this not just evoke the four Rs? Everyone is familiar with the three R’s ~ Reading, ‘Riting and ‘Rithmetic 😉 In Saskatoon experience the four R’s ~reflection, rest, relaxation and renewal.
