We are currently seeking an experienced Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide app editor for a project during the United Nations Decade on Ecological Restoration. This project will involve creating an app that will provide information on the traditional and medicinal uses of plants found in the afforestation areas, as well as dealing with invasive species and their impact, and protecting species at risk.

The ideal candidate should have:

An advanced knowledge of Traditional Ecological Knowledge and its application in afforestation areas
Experience creating and editing apps
Knowledge of dealing with invasive species, protecting species at risk, and using traditional and medicinal uses of plants
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Seeking an Innovative Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide App Editor

Are you a writer / editor who is passionate about environmental heritage, culture and Indigenous perspectives? We are looking for an experienced story teller editor to build a unique and comprehensive self guided tour to guide visitors through the 474 acres of greenspace located in the heart of the Midwest. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop new and edit existing stories for a guide that integrates Indigenous philosophy and provides new models of how to relate to the land and restore and build relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous communities.

This project is an exciting opportunity to create a self guided tour via a smart phone that combines Traditional Ecological Knowledge, ethnobotany, Indigenous heritage and culture, and Indigenous languages. The app will be used to explore and appreciate the many species of plants and animals found in this greenspace. The app will also provide an opportunity to learn about traditional ecological practices, as well as how to care for and protect this valuable habitat.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a deep understanding of Indigenous perspectives and cultures, as well as a passion for the environment and its protection. Experience in developing stories, and editing existing stories is an asset. The actual programming and coding of the app is completed. We are looking for someone creative and innovative who can bring this project to life with stories, and editing existing stories. World Biodiversity Day

It is a means to protect and restore watersheds, increase carbon storage, and recover native biodiversity resulting in increased crop yields with this low cost method.

Tony Rinaudo, the Forest maker, received his Bachelor’s Degree, Rural Science University of New England Australia, and agronomy through the University of Armidale as well as attending the Bible College of New Zealand (Diploma in Bible and Missions). Rinaudo is known for putting forward a deforestation management practice known as farmer-managed natural regeneration (FMNR). Following his marriage they ended up for 18 years in Niger, Africa which Rinaudo described as a “moonscape.” Though many tree planting methods were tried the degraded land and the population were facing desert like conditions, famine, disease and drought. Though these degraded conditions exist, without resources for sustaining life FMNR provides sustainable land regeneration to restore Africa’s uplands. Through FMNR, a means of pruning and management, the underground forest of roots catalyzed into trees above ground. Rinaudo worked with local farmers in Niger in the transformation of hectares of dry land. He has worked as the Principal Natural Resources Advisor for World Vision Australia, and is currently the Senior Climate Action Advisor. Rinaudo is recognized for both his environmental and humanitarian approaches for global initiatives.

Rinaudo, the Forest Maker, was the 2018 Laureate of the Right Livelihood Award and bestowed the Member of the Order of Australia. Rinaudo, the “alternative Nobel” winner was portrayed in a documentary “Forest Maker” created by German director and film maker Volker Schlöndorff’ Following the making of the film, a panel session went into the FMNR approach, and the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100)

Tony Rinaudo, from Australia happened upon one of St. Barbe’s Sahara books which influenced him. He is now referred to as the “Forest Maker” saving lives, and awarded the Order of Australia and the alternative Nobel Prize in Stockholm for farmer managed natural regeneration. He is an Australian agronomist discovering a way to grow forests without planting trees.

Rinaudo is an Australian agronomist who has pioneered and championed a simple method to grow trees in dry and degraded lands. He has empowered and inspired a farmer led movement across continents, regreening the lands, improving the livelihoods of millions and helping to combat biodiversity loss and climate change.

Everyone, everywhere is inextricably linked

“Wetlands as the ‘kidneys’ of the earth are the site or ‘organ’ where the life-giving vitality of water is generated and stored. Both are places of the life-giving flow of water, not of foul stagnancy. In Chines cosmology and medicine the liver is associated with wood, and ‘in wood the sap must flow’ or else the tree will die just as in the body of the earth water must flow or the earth will die” is related by Rod Giblett.

Grasslands ‘account for between 20-20% of the world’s land area’. Skin is the ‘human body’s largest organ’ accounting for 16% of a body’s weight.

The trees ‘are often recognized as the ‘lungs of the world’ because they exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the atmosphere’.

The eco-system is inter-twined. “When the trees go, the rain goes, the climate deteriorates, the water table sinks, the land erodes and desert conditions soon appear”.~Richard St. Barbe Baker

Today is Saturday April 11, and 11 days from Earth Day April 22. This year’s Earth Day 2020 theme is Climate Action. Chemicals, and polluted lands affect our earth and vegetation growth. Everything in the soil, affects the food we eat, as the roots dig deep into the soil for sustenance. Pollution in the water contaminates our drinking water, the drinking water for all wildlife, fish and waterfowl. The plants and vegetation also draw up the water from the water table. Air pollution affects not only our lungs, but the respiratory system of plants and animals. The human actions affect the earth in so many ways. The industrial revolution has impacted everything, and society has changed to a throw away culture. No longer do we mend, repair, fix and re-use as our ancestors did. During the COVID-19 epidemic if you were self-isolating for 14 days or longer, it was a time of not running to the store every time you were short of something. Remember to refuse – don’t buy and buy and buy, consider if it is needed. Then only buy the items with the least packaging and packaging which can be recycled. Find a used appliance dealer, second hand clothing store, for items you no longer need. Always re-cycle, let someone else use your gently used item. Reduce all your energy devices which are using carbon fuels, use renewable energy, energy saving devices. Go back in time, and hang your clothing on the clothes line rather than using the dryer. Try active transportation rather than using a vehicle. Active transportation can be bicycles, walking, skiing, skateboarding, or any other human powered means of locomotion.

Each day is a little life. Celebrate this International Day of Happiness at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and wrap yourself in the ever-unfolding happiness which Richard St. Barbe Baker himself speaks of. The day being bright and mild, with great masses of white cloud in the sky.
Can you see the melting away of the cloud into the clean air at the fringe of its edges and here, and now,

Stop, shhh, quiet, listen the song oft repeated and prolonged.
It is a ringing, animated strain, silvern and golden.
And the blackbird with its lilt and only a few bars of its song, Enough to satisfy of the surprising quality of the strain.
The sun now high and warm, with hardly a cloud in the sky; and yonder a mist,
High up on the tall tree the red breasted thrush was pouring out his song, and filling the woods with melody.
Such full-throated harmony and long-drawn cadences.
Melody, tenderness, and plaintiveness.
And as Keats once said;
“And with thee fade away into the forest dim.”

What was Richard St. Barbe Baker’s mission, that he imparted to the Watu Wa Miti, the very first forest scouts or forest guides? To protect the native forest, plant ten native trees each year, and take care of trees everywhere.
