Wildwoods of Saskatoon Film premieres Sunday Sept 18 at 2:00 p.m. Remai Modern #NationalForestWeek introduces thousands of people to these unique natural afforestation areas the 132 hectare Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, and the 60 hectare George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

The Wildwoods of Saskatoon heritage documentary spotlights their rich history and heritage. Walking tours delve into the diverse natural features.to appreciate the mature pine and spruce groves, a large marsh area with numerous waterfowl including horned grebes, and other endangered species, native trembling aspen, wild rose and much more.

We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their afforestation to trees which also aligns with the centenary of the International Tree Foundation, and the 30th anniversary of National Forest Week. Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. is a non-profit, environmental charity focused on the protection and enhancement of both the. The areas were planted in 1972 under the Green Survival Program, and preserved in perpetuity by Saskatoon City Council in 1979.Tree planting initiatives, environmental stewardship work together to prevent, enhance nature aesthetics, biodiversity habitats and reverse degradation of the environment honouring the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.

What is the ‘triple environmental emergency we are facing?

1. Loss of biodiversity

2. Climate change

3. Out of control pollution.Our native biodiversity needs wild spaces, food and homes such as trees and forests provide in which to thrive. Forests, tree planting, and forest conservation initiatives are nature-based solutions towards climate action. Pollution, pesticides, herbicides are escalating the extinction events.

Creating safe, organic forest spaces is a large step to halt and slow down the silent sixth mass extinction event of invertebrates, the planet’s bird food on wings. Ornithologists and botanists have noticed that the songbird, and raptor populations have declined by a staggering 48%. The monitored wildlife populations are reduced by a catastrophic 68%. A loss of forests and habitats have caused over 2/3 of our animal populations to totally disappear.

Richard St. Barbe Baker said it this way, “If a person loses one third of his or her skin, the person will die; if a tree loses a third of its bark, the tree will die, and if the world loses a third of its trees, the world will die.We live less that five minutes without air and the trees give us air we breathe. We live less than five days without water, and trees are absolutely essential in the water cycle. We live less than five weeks without food, and without the trees we could not grow food.” (Filson, Bruce K. October 7, 1982, Western People, p. 5)

Tree planting events, forest tours, a heritage film “Wildwoods of Saskatoon”, in person and virtual events will take place during National Forest Week. PaRx has arrived in Saskatchewan attesting to the increased health and wellness benefits people experience when getting out to enjoy our forest greenspaces. Nature enriches the lives of visitors. #NationalForestWeek events are wonderful ways to help create new healthy biodiversity habitats, to discover new trees and unexplored forest places, or perhaps it is a time to return to celebrate a favourite forest you love and are familiar with.During this era of climate change take part in #NationalForestWeek This is the change to tie events together to enhance the multifaceted experience of all visitors.

Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area has many stories to share! You might know that that this 326 acre man made forest on the prairies was planted as a tree nursery in 1972 and named as an urban regional park in 1979, but did you know this site was also named for Richard St. Barbe Baker, global conservationist who founded the International Tree Foundation with the Dance of the Trees 100 years ago July 22, 1922.

International Tree Foundation (ITF) is an international, non-profit, non-political, conservation organisation. It is involved in planting, maintenance and protection of trees. It was founded in Kenya on 22 July 1922 by Richard St. Barbe Baker as Men of the Trees. It operates in several countries in Africa and in the United Kingdom. There have been chapters in over 100 countries. By some estimates, organizations he founded or assisted have been responsible for planting at least 26 billion trees, internationally.

Men of the Trees Exhibition

Richard St. Barbe Baker is being honoured this year! It is the 100th anniversary for the founding of the International Tree Foundation started by Baker. On July 22, 1922, the first dance took place in Kenya, Africa, founding the Men of the Trees (later changing names to the International Tree Foundation)

Richard St. Barbe Baker was also the very first honourary lifetime member of the World Wildlife Federation. Baker created many wildlife habitats by planting trees and conserving forests worldwide.

Later in the year, the Unity Museum is planning to host Paul Hanley, who wrote a biography on St Barbe. “We are presently planning a special centenary luncheon with Paul Hanley as keynote speaker, to be attended by many University of Washington students, members of Parks and Recreation and like-minded conservationists,”

The Hidden Mystery Behind Richard St. Barbe Baker

Many people have heard of David Suzuki, David Attenborough, or Greta Thunberg. Richard St. Barbe Baker was the first global conservationist and humanitarian. Richard St. Barbe Baker was an enigma within an enigma. He had a belief system he held onto and followed his dreams unfailingly. It always seemed to Baker that all of his dreams came true.

Richard St. Barbe Baker travelled to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to take the first steps in founding a new school of Deep Ecology at the University of Saskatchewan. Robert White had written a thesis on Deep Ecology. Upon reading said thesis, Richard St. Barbe Baker desired to have as a seat at the University of Saskatchewan.

“I picture village communities of the future living in valleys protected by sheltering trees on the high ground. They will have fruit and nut orchards and live free from disease and enjoy leisure, liberty and justice for all, living with a sense of their one-ness with the earth and with all living things.”~Richard St. Barbe Baker

Baker found that through his work with the Children of the Green Earth, that the tree planting involving children is a most excellent medium for peacemaking. “My father was born here and died here, and so did his father, and they saw many hard things…But they did not have to see the end of the forest, as I do, the dispersal of our companions. This task has fallen on me and it is hard, very hard.”1

Richard St. Barbe Baker believed in the founding of the Children of the Green Earth as a means to heal the earth – for every child a tree. What has happened to Children of the Green Earth international organization?

Richard St. Barbe Baker believed that their should be an International Tree Foundation branch in the City of Saskatoon. This is where he had roots, and this was one of his prime imperatives.

Sadly, therefore, we see that some dreams have not heretofore come to fruition – yet. There are areas where we can still prevail and succeed to follow on in the path, footsteps and vision of Richard St. Barbe Baker.

Will the School of Deep Ecology at the University of Saskatchewan start up to fulfill Richard St. Barbe Baker’s Dreams?

Will there be an International Tree Foundation branch started in the City of Saskatoon?

As people move forward to live in oneness with the earth and all living beings, will the campaign to plant one tree for every child on the earth resume, and move forward with great gusto?

Will the mystery behind Richard St. Barbe Baker be resolved? All of his dreams do come true.

The Daily Telegraph, June 11, 1982 mentioned that “Richard St. Barbe Baker…spent his life in a single-minded campaign which stressed the essential importance of the part trees play in people’s well-being.”

In 1979, the Prince of Wales became the patron of the global green group Richard St. Barbe Baker founded, the International Tree Foundation.

Among the tributes paid to Richard St. Barbe Baker are hundreds if not thousands of trees planted to his honour.

Robert White says” St. Barbe is known all over the world for his tireless efforts on behalf of conservation and tree planting. He is truly a world citizen. In his life he has been instrumental in preserving the Redwood forests in California and developing a program for reclaiming the Sahara Desert. He has circled the globe countless times lecturing, setting up tree planting programs and providing a focus for several generations of people to learn more about the biosphere in which we dwell.”(9832)

His presentation was a heartfelt speech of his memories and time getting to know Richard St. Barbe Baker. It was poignant, touching, and truly gave meaning to the legacy of Richard St. Barbe Baker, founder of the International Tree Foundation.

CBC Open To Outdoors

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. were honoured to be contacted by CBC Saskatoon Morning host Leisha Grebinski to be added to their urban nature series named Open to Outdoors Saskatoon. This radio show airs from 6:00 to 8:30 am on CBC Radio One, and our particular piece may perhaps air on Tuesday March 23, 2021.

Robert White who knew Richard St. Barbe Baker provided a very intriguing talk about the legacy of Richard St. Barbe Baker founder of the Interational Tree Foundation (ITF). Baker, who By some estimates, organisations he founded or assisted have been responsible for planting at least 26 billion trees, internationally during his lifetime. The influence of Baker continues on today with many more people forming international organizations for tree planting with people inspired by St Barbe books, talks and radio shows.

Julia Adamson spoke to the formation of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area under the Green Survival Program, and how the afforestation area began. The benches and bird feeders installed for the Take it Outside Winter Staycation Outside Safely program were highlighted with a huge thank you and round of appreciation to the City of Saskatoon.

Two amazing bird feeder stations were installed and the numbers of families stopping and marvelling at the birds to the feeders is phenomenal. We are very appreciative of their advice from Early’s Seed and Feed and their guidance for success. People are coming out to the afforestation areas with pockets full of bird seed to hand feed the birds which are becoming accustomed to the bird feeders of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

Use the self-guided tour pamphlet winter bird checklist to learn which are the winter birds who frequent the bird feeders when you come out for a walk in the forest.

There have been many people appreciating and making use of the benches which were made by the Core Neighbourhood Youth Program CNYC. They did a dynamic job with the lettering “COVID bubble benches Keep 6 feet apart) which was so very helpful. This was a dire need to replace the old wooden picnic table which was 25 years old at least, the wood was rotten, and the table had collapsed creating a hazard in the forest. Now there is a safe means to sit, and socially distance while outside, so, all in all, a low risk activity during these weird COVID months for sure.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. supported a great number of local businesses for this project and we encouraged them to take part in the Saskatoon Tourism Saskatoon CommUNITY Commitment which is an amazing program.

During COVID inviting and welcoming citizens of Saskatoon and area to engage in low risk activity outside is the best holistic health and wellness that the city residents could dream of. Rather than having two best kept secrets in the city, and having loads of pressure and shoulder to shoulder people at our other city urban regional parks, it is a great time, for the residents of Saskatoon to find, discover, explore, and celebrate the afforestation areas – the 326 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, and George Genereux Urban Regional Park, not only during COVID to comply with protocols of social distancing, but also to honour afforestation areas and the way nature based solutions take action on climate change, and to further honour healing forests in this time of truth and reconciliation.

National Tree Dressing Day honours the life-giving blessings of trees and is based upon an ancient custom. “Trees have long been celebrated for their spiritual significance. The simplicity of tying strips of cloth or yarn to a tree is universal and timeless. The old Celtic custom of tying cloth dipped in water from a holy well to a ‘clootie tree’ echoes the practice in Japan of decorating trees with strips of white paper, or tanzaku, bearing wishes and poems.
