PaRx Launches in Saskatchewan is such great news! This article, brought forward by Robert White, goes on to say “Lifestyle is a major contributor to health, and as physicians we promote healthy lifestyles for our patients,” offers SMA President Dr. Eben Strydom. “Through PaRx physicians can provide a written prescription, as opposed to advice, that hopefully will be more effective to connect patients with nature, improving their health.”

The Saskatchewan Medical Association SMA goes on to say this about the National nature prescription program, PaRx, launches in Saskatchewan, “There’s a strong and growing body of research on the health benefits of nature time, from better immune function and life expectancy to reduced risk of heart disease, depression and anxiety,” states Dr. Lem, who believes governments should designate parks an essential part of the health-care system.

Forest Restoration

March 21 is a spectacular day! It is the United Nations International Day of Forests! This is a day to take especial notice of the semi-wilderness bio-diversity in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the George Genreux Urban Regional Park.

During these days of COVID with isolation, loneliness, anxiety, depression, and having COVID affecting our family, work and lives to such a great extent, it is wonderful to have a natural prescription for healing and have a walk in the forest. This is a very healing, peaceful, and restorative process to connect with nature in these weird times.

Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area is 326 acres, and George Genereux Urban Regional Park is 148 acres, so plenty of room for social distancing, to derive some fantastic health benefits.

There is great importance in forests. Richard St. Barbe Baker, himself had a tree pledge for forest guardians: to plant ten trees a year, take care of trees everywhere, and do one good deed every day. The theme of International Day of Forests this year is “‘Forest Restoration: a path to recovery and well-being.” This ties into United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration very well indeed!

So let us all take up Richard St. Barbe Baker’s forest guardian pledge starting on the International Day of Forests. Let us all plant ten trees a year, take care of trees everywhere, and do one good deed every day. What a great thought during these weird COVID times for sure.\

World Heart Day

 

 

What are your body’s bio rhythms?  Are you in tune with the rising and the setting of the sun?  Are you aware of the season change and the equinox on your body?  Living in urban centres in the industrialized world have removed the majority of the population from the forest, the electrical light have de-sensitized the body to the cycles of daylight, our heart and cardiovascular system work in tune to clocks, calendar schedules, and a face paced life to meet deadlines.  Where is the time spent breathing slowly and deeply and becoming attune to the rhythm and flow of our bodies in the forest?  Who re-charges their hearts and bodies at day break with a saunter in the woods?  Who winds down the day with a relaxing stroll through the forest to ready the mind-body for sleep?  Do you know when the next full moon or new moon is?

Studies have proven that walking in the forest has cardiovascular benefits.  Hospital gardens,  Shinrin-Yoku or forest bathing researchers are all finding calming, relaxing benefits on the cardiovascular system as compared to those walking a brick and ashpalt urban setting.

Our data indicated that the forest walking program has a positive influence on cardiovascular relaxation.””…”participants felt more comfortable, soothed, and natural after forest walking than after urban walking both before and after activities,” stated researchers from Finland, Japan and Korea

“Time spent walking and relaxing in a forest environment (“forest bathing” or “forest therapy”) has well demonstrated anti-stress effects in healthy adults… Blood pressure and several physiological and psychological indices of stress were measured the day before and approximately 2 h following forest therapy… Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP), urinary adrenaline, and serum cortisol were all significantly lower than baseline following forest therapy … Subjects reported feeling significantly more “relaxed” and “natural” ” Researchers

Polizzi states that the Journal of Alternative And Complimentary Medicine, walking barefoot “reduces blood viscosity, which is a major factor in cardiovascular disease”.  Yoga practitioners practice cleansing  throughout the body by walking barefoot.
