George Genereux Tour

So, as has been posted the fencing is starting to come together at the speed of light 😉 So, today, we had a wonderful gentleman named Preston who presided over the ribbon cutting ceremony at George Genereux Park.

The tour went through 3 or 4 various changing ecosystems, as a circle was made in George Genereux Park. Actually it was nice to see the ecotone, where an ecotone is where more than on ecosystem meet with each other. So the drought resistant, hardy tree plantings celebrating their 50th anniversary were meeting with the trembling aspen bluffs with buffaloberry, red-osier dogwood and snow berry and so on as native species. A number of heritage points were covered including the West Swale, some of the flora and fauna of the afforestation areas, the early afforestation areas history under the Green Survival Progam, and the two films about the afforestation areas and the pfg.friendsareas.ca app, and the planned updates to the app from Gabriel Dumont Institute and CWF Youth group.

So, a sampling of imagery is shown here, including the inaugural ribbon cutting for George Genereux Park, Preston and the new fence which is nearing completion! Thank you to everyone who came out to the park. We hope you enjoy your next visit, and some exciting places to explore till you find your favourite place in the forest!

This is a wonderful way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of #NationalForestWeek, and the 50th anniversary of the afforestation areas!

Richard St. Barbe Baker

Clean up Thank You!

We wish to give a heartfelt round of thank you to everyone, and all those from around Saskatoon who cleaned up the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area [west side] and all those people who helped with the clean up at George Genereux Urban Regional Park on Saturday October 3. An amazing job was done at both urban regional parks in the City of Saskatoon making them a great deal safer and much more enjoyable as we admire the amazing autumn colours of the forest. This is indeed a city we can be proud of! Clean ups are instantaneous ways of creating a visible and tangible difference in the protection of our city’s environment.

The first Monday of October, Monday October 5 is World Habitat Day, and truly, what an amazing difference to the habitat of the semi-wilderness areas out at George Genereux Urban Regional park and at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area! Thank you kindly again for everyone who came out!

Thanks kindly to Shell Station at 11th Street and Dawes Avenue, Petro Canada on 11th Street and Witney Avenue, Boston Pizza Blairmore, Poor Boys Gas and Food Bar 11th Street and Sk Hwy 7 and Canadian Tire Confederation. These corporations indeed helped with the clean up of October 3, 2020 at George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

Additionally the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc., City of Saskatoon, Meewasin Valley Authority, Fatlanders Fatbike Brigade Inc. , residents from the City of Saskatoon all showed up alongside a journalist who all took part in the clean up occurring on October 3, 2020.

Please be aware that the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux have some magnificent and beautiful elm trees. Please follow guidelines for pruning, and please dispose of any elm leaves and branches in bags for the landfill. Thanks very much

Facebook Fundraiser. STOP Dutch Elm Disease pandemic  from entering the afforestation areas! Help protect this City of Saskatoon Urban Regional Park!

  • There would be very little point in my exhausting myself and other conservationist themselves in trying to protect animals and habitats if we weren’t at the same time raising young people to be better stewards.

City of Saskatoon Thank you so much

All of us here at the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. want to thank you for the arranging the large dumpsters placed at George Genereux Urban Regional Park for the Clean Green Community Scene clean up on Saturday September 19.

The Clean Green Community Scene followed special precautions, and had some tremendous results! It is truly a continual community effort to keep our urban regional parks in the south west of the City of Saskatoon clean and beautiful. With you help, this is an area we can be proud of.

It was truly an unparalleled success. Thank you kindly.

Besides, the spiritual side of human nature needs the refreshing inspiration which comes from trees and woodlands. If a nations saves its trees, the trees will save the nation. George Genereux Park

George Genereux Park cleanup

On Sept. 19, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. were impressed to see people come out to George Genereux Urban Regional Park to clean up garbage left behind by those contractors and people too lazy or too cheap to use the nearby landfill.

There are many who enjoy this forest. The Saskatoon Nature Society bands birds; dog walkers and foresters revel in the delights of the woodlands; citizen scientists record the flora and fauna on iNaturalist and mothers enjoy the scenery with their children and infants.

During these weird times, community members and businesses cooperated in preserving the environment at George Genereux Park. We were impressed with the results — more than 9,270 kilograms (204,367 pounds) was removed from the park. Just in time for National Forest Week, the forest has been loved and cared for.

Our team is very impressed to see people who are concerned about parks. These two areas were created in 1979, the same year as Chief Whitecap Park, Cranberry Flats Conservation Area and Beaver Creek.

We think that not too many residents in the City of Saskatoon know about Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (330 acres) and George Genereux Urban Regional Park (147.9 acres) in the very southwest of the city; they are Saskatoon’s best kept secrets and locations where it is easy to maintain social distancing.

It is very encouraging and uplifting that several community members are concerned enough with the forests to wish to preserve their beauty, legacy and heritage.

George Genereux Park Cleanup was featured in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix September 29, 2020. Thank you kindly

Thank you to all who helped at the George Genereux Urban Regional Park in the fall of 2020. The 148 acre greenspace allowed social distancing to keep everyone safe during COVID protocols.

3,410 kg Richard-St-Barb-Baker-Afforestation-Area October 3

15,340 kg in TOTAL which works out to 16.9 US tons – 33,818.9 pounds – 15.1 Imperial Tons – 15.34 tonnes was removed in the fall of 2020.

The Saskatoon Afforestation Areas were in the public media twice recently.

Michael Smith and his Children~ ride bicycles in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area who reached out to the press. Right in the middle of the bike trails: illegal dumping happening in outskirts of Saskatoon. The other article was a Letter to the Editor appearing in Sept 29, 2020 Saskatoon StarPhoenix on page A7 Impressive Efforts for Cleanup of Park. This clean up was organized by the non-profit charity Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc.

On behalf of the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. , we would like to tell you how incredibly grateful all of us are for your support and generosity.

We value your ongoing support and sponsorship. This laid the way for a safer and much improved urban regional park that you helped bring about by supporting our volunteers who came out and divided into the north and the south side of the park.

Without the contribution from Safeway Lawson Heights 134 Primrose Drive none of this would have been possible. Now families are safe in the park, dog walkers can enjoy the scenery, bird banders are secure of their footing, and those recording flora and fauna on iNaturalist can find ever so much more in George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

“The future of the planet concerns all of us, and all of us should do what we can to protect it. ” Wangari Maathai.

“The science of forestry arose from the recognition of a universal need. It embodies the spirit of service to mankind in attempting to provide a means of supplying forever a necessity of life and, in addition, ministering to man’s aesthetic tastes and recreational interests. Besides, the spiritual side of human nature needs the refreshing inspiration which comes from trees and woodlands. If a nations saves its trees, the trees will save the nation. And nations as well as tribes may be brought together in this great movement, based on the ideal of beautifying the world by the cultivation of one of God’s loveliest creatures – the tree.” ~ Richard St. Barbe Baker

Divide and Conquer!

Rubenstein Manager of the Great Global Cleanup says; “This pandemic has not stopped the pollution of our environment — and it won’t stop us either. Cleanups are still possible, and together we can make a real difference in the health of our planet.” World Clean Up Day is Saturday September 19 the same day as the Saskatoon George Genereux Urban Regional Park clean up

The Province of Saskatchewan provides guidelines and reminders in these uncertain times about public safety in group gatherings, see the following listing. We will divide and conquer! Divide into groups, and conquer the trash! Never, ever will there be 30 or more people picking up the same trash pile!!!

Risks of COVID-19 REMINDERS

  • Individuals who are sick should stay home.
  • A physical distance of two metres should be maintained between people not from the same household or extended household.
  • Individuals should wash their hands before and after using park.
  • Avoid overcrowding. Individual groups must not exceed the restrictions on public gatherings.

Restrictions limiting the size of indoor and outdoor public and private gatherings remain in place. Effective July 28, 2020, indoor and outdoor gatherings may have a maximum of 30 people provided a two metre separation can be maintained at times between individuals who are not in the same household.”  The gathering size restriction does not apply to:

  • “Settings where people are distributed into multiple rooms or buildings, and workplaces.”
  • In George Genereux Urban Regional Park we are all dividing up into separate workplaces whether we have more than or less than 30 people turn out. People may arrive for different shifts throughout the day, and go to separate areas to clean up throughout the park. PLEASE SIGN IN at the registration desk first and get your supplies 😉 Thanks.

George Genereux Urban Regional Park is

1/2 mile by 1/2 mile in size or 147.8 acres, so there are lots of areas to have two metre separation

Practise proper hand hygiene:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water or, when unavailable, with hand sanitizer.
  • Refrain from touching your face.
  • Carry and use alcohol-based hand sanitizers before and after.

Areas we establish, such as the registration table, and visited by people will be kept clean and free from clutter and regularly cleaned with disinfectant!

  • Face masks  are an additional measure we are all taking here today to protect people around you when physical distancing cannot be maintained or is unpredictable.  You may use your own PPE, or know that we supply facemasks!
  • So celebrate World Clean Up Day on Saturday September 19 at George Genereux Urban Regional Park!
