A 2023 calendar for you to download and print presenting both wildlife and wilderness habitats from Saskatoon’s hidden gems. In gratitude for everyone who became members, and gave donations, we were happy to be able to have calendars this year to showcase these natural heritage greenspaces. We have no more printed copies, so we would like to share the pdf with whomever would like a copy to download and experience the forests this way.

There are also forest pamphlets and more activity pages.

Also in development is the smart phone self-guided digital wayfinding GPS app, the Prairie Forest Guide Interpretive Stories for the forest journey. The rich geological, historical, natural, and cultural heritage of the areas honours where we have been. Science, conservation, and hands on learning about the land, the environment and sustainability ensure our future.

The long needles of the Scots Pine

was Arbor Day, the very very first Arbor Day in the province of Saskatchewan! If you didn’t get your tree planted yet, Arbor Week continues today and tomorrow, so you can have the weekend. Yay!

So, there is a virtual activity you can take part in to celebrate your love of trees.

Come out to the afforestation areas; either Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area or George Genereux Urban Regional Park, and immerse yourself in nature while social distancing and following COVID-19 protocols.

Download the iNaturalist app and sign into a free account. (Android, iPhone)
Join the Genereux Park Eco-Quest and the Baker Area Eco-Quest. Search for those names or afforestation in the iNaturalist app.
As you walk take a nature selfie and upload a photo or sound clip and add it to the project.

It does not matter what plant, animal, insect, or bird you see every observation is important, whether you find that elusive rare butterfly or share your find of a common weed. This becomes a living record that scientists can use to monitor changes in these urban regional parks’ biodiversity.

If you really like nature and observing, then try to go out at different times of the day, sunrise, midday, sunset. And continue around every season to see phenological changes.

iNaturalist is a great way to observe, learn and become aware of your surroundings in nature, and discovering urban nature. Hear it. See it. Live it.

Arbor Week, a time to recognize the importance and values of trees. Public awareness of our native indigenous trees is of great import during this week, as is taking the time to take action on climate change and plant a few trees.

An amazing way to identify trees is via LeafSnap or through iNaturalist. These are two great “pocket guides” on your smart phone to use in the field. As you walkabout Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area or George Genereux Urban Regional Park, take a picture with your smart phone using one of these two apps, and the app will bring forward suggestions just for you. As a matter of fact, there is a great Eco-Quest being undertaken right now, a great arbor week activity which can be undertaken while social distancing.

How can you be thankful to your community? Have you gone out of your way to profess a heartfelt thank you to someone who has made a difference in your community? What of the countless people who make the city safe, and beautiful? Have you extended a word of thanks to those who keep your parks area verdant and the heart of your community. The Urban Forestry Program, takes care of those trees which remove pollutants from our air, creating a wondrous city free of smog.

What is it that makes a good city excellent? Shops, entertainment, shelter are among some readily picked choices.

However, is not the public park, the place where childhood memories made? Just as a healthy frog serves as an indicator of a thriving environment, does not a good park serve as measure of a world class city?

What is the difference between a park and a parking lot? Well most people agree, that a good and blissful public park has lots of trees, wetlands, and fresh fragrant woodland and meadow air. A great park has safety, and provides a sanctuary to interact within the neighbourhood, and meet new people A perfect setting for a picnic, events, recreation, and general happiness and relaxation to everyone in the neighbourhood. A wide variety of cultural events embrace musicians, yoga groups, bicycle trips, bird watchers, the young and the old.

Perhaps you bring your kids to run and play! Or maybe your dogs need to sniff and get some mental exercise. Your camera might need to be taken out of the box and out for a leisurely walk. Perhaps your son or daughter has ADHD or is autistic, and what better sense of achievement that a stroll or bicycle ride down a forest path for physical health and mental healing? A teacher may use the path to teach their students about the environment. The public park is a place for fellowship, health and wellbeing for one and all where can everyone find a safe place in nature as Saskatoon grows to a booming population of one million!

However it works for you, be thankful for your park. Its not every city that has a healthy ecosystem embracing grasslands, woodlands and wetlands.
