Fencing at George Genereux Park

So the fencing is just about completed at George Genereux Park in Saskatoon. When one thinks about how long it takes to fence in a homeowners property, and how long it takes, it is absolutely mind boggling that a quarter section of land is receiving fencing within such a time frame.

The posts started going in the ground on Tues Sept 21, the posts are all completed, and the wire has an amazing start as well. Come out, have a walk in the forest, and be amazed at the difference that the greenspace now has.

Here are some pictures of how the afforestation area at George Genereux park looks now. We will place more tags and reflector tape next week to protect animals.

This is a wonderful way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of #NationalForestWeek, and the 50th anniversary of the afforestation areas!

This fencing went up with advice from the City of Saskatoon and Meewasin, and with the amazing support of the Government of Canada.

So, under the advisement of the City of Saskatoon and Meewasin, George Genereux Park has fencing in the style of the North East Swale, which is wildlife friendly fencing so the animals can hop/fly over top, and sneak underneath. Tagging helps the animals to visually see the fencing if they are running around.

CKQ fencing (CKQ Fence Construction) were the contractors, and as mentioned, if your want an excellent wildlife friendly fencing, this is a great choice for contractors.

Stay tuned for more about tagging and a call for volunteers .

Grateful because of you

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. wish to thank our donors for their donations through Canada Helps and Paypal Giving. Thanks to you contributions, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas can offer place based educational learning trips to the afforestation areas helping to sponsor portable toilet rentals or offset bus trip fees to nature immersion classes. Because of you, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas can protect the wildlife habitats, the flora and fauna from illegal trespass and illegal dumping as your contribution goes towards trash bags for clean ups, wildlife friendly fencing and the tagging of the fencing.

Your generosity supports the greenspaces of the 326 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the 148 acre George Genereux Urban Regional Park.

Your amazing contribution is a testament to the difference between a parking lot and a greenspace park, a semi-wilderness habitat, indeed. Because of you, it will be possible to support these greenspaces, and protect them for this generation and the next.

If you live in Saskatoon and area- thanks for calling for your recycling pick up. We will sort the bottles and stand in line. Your contribution goes a long way in environmental protections.

“Be like a tree in pursuit of your cause. Stand firm, grip hard, thrust upward. Bend to the winds of heaven..”
Richard St. Barbe Baker

Turn back the clock to April 2016

“I will play no part in this devastation of the land, I am determined to live and work for peaceful construction for I am morally responsible for the world of today and the generations of tomorrow.’”~Richard St. Barbe

“Almost everywhere in the world man has been disregarding the Divine Law and the Laws of Nature, to his own undoing. In his pride, he has rampaged over the stage of the earth, forgetting that he is only one of the players put there to play his part in harmony and oneness with all living things.”~Richard St. Barbe Baker

April 25, 2016 Pat Lorje, the previous City of Saskatoon ward 2 councillor, spoke to City Council;

  1. “What measures can be taken in both the short term (since there is no current budget for this) and the long-term to enclose the area in order to prevent unlawful dumping of garbage and trespass by motorized vehicles, including snowmobiles and ATVs? This could include measures such as strategically placed boulders, gates and fencing, and”
  2. “Can/will the City provide resources to pick-up the accumulated garbage in the area? This could be accomplished by either City crews picking-up this garbage, or by giving assistance for landfill tipping fees for community volunteers to start the clean-up of this significant urban asset.”

In following up on Pat Lorje’s request, the Parks design team went out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, to determine trash sites, GPS locations, the manner of refuse dumped and where the egress points were for vehicles. The afforestation area east of the SW OLRA had a larger amount of household waste, as compared to the west side of the afforestation area near Sk Highway 7.

There are NO civic funded maintenance services for the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

Community volunteer clean up initiatives were:

3300 kilograms (7275 Pounds) of trash, chesterfields, construction materials with nails, shingles, and tires were removed Cleanup ~ spring of 2015 from the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

8,300 kilograms, 18,300 pounds, 9 tons was the weight (approx tonnage) of shingles, construction materials, household garbage, appliances removed summer of July 2016 from the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

October 2016 1,500 kilograms (3,300 pounds) of trash that was missed in the previous clean ups of June 2015 and July 2016 from the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

The city covered the tipping fees.

Total of three community volunteer clean ups from landfill weigh scales… 28,875 pounds, 13,100 kilograms, 12.89 tons !

“This generation may either be the last to exist in any semblance of a civilised world or that it will be the first to have the vision, the bearing and the greatness to say, ‘I will have nothing to do with this destruction of life, I will play no part in this devastation of the land, I am determined to live and work for peaceful construction for I am morally responsible for the world of today and the generations of tomorrow.’”~Richard St. Barbe Baker

The trees and vegetation, which cover the land surface of the Earth and delight the eye, are performing vital tasks incumbent upon the vegetable world in nature. Its presence is essential to earth as an organism. It is the first condition of all life; it it the ‘skin’ of the earth, for without it there can be no water, and therefore, no life.~Richard St. Barbe Baker

It is not a farce.…”To be whole. To be complete. Wildness reminds us what it means to be human, what we are connected to rather than what we are separate from.” ~Terry Tempest Williams
