Significant Role- The Old Bone Trail

The Old Bone Trail is a 1.5 km walking trail that follows the route buffalo bones were taken to the rail yards in Saskatoon. The Métis people were responsible for bringing the bones to the yards, and passing through the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area RSBBAA on the way. The Indigenous and Métis history of the land that is part of the afforestation areas is one aspect that needs to be included through virtual markers on the digital wayfinding app.

The Old Bone Trail was created historically and we now remember the significant role buffalo bones played in the development of Saskatoon. The bones were collected by Métis people, who drove the bones to the rail yards in Saskatoon, passing through the RSBBAA on the way. The bones were then shipped to the USA where they were used for fertilizer, resulting in the growth of the city of Saskatoon.

The trail is also designed to help people understand the Indigenous and Métis history of the land that is part of the afforestation areas. The digital wayfinding app includes virtual markers that tell the story of the land, the people, and the buffalo bones story belonging to the Old Bone Trail heritage. Through these markers, users can learn about the history of the land, and how it was used by the Métis people to collect the bones and bring them to the rail yards.

The Old Bone Trail is a unique and important part of Saskatoon’s history. It is not only a reminder of the important role buffalo bones played in the development of the city, but also an opportunity to learn about the Indigenous and Métis history of the land. With the help of the digital wayfinding app, users can gain a deeper understanding of the land, the people, and the buffalo bones that were brought to the rail yards in Saskatoon.

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about cultural and environmental heritage and has a proven track record of writing and editing existing engaging and informative content. You should have a good understanding of the issues surrounding naturalized areas, as well as a strong grasp of the English language. Indigenous Perspectives on the Land: Embracing New Models of Wayfinding Through Virtual Smartphone Prairie Forest Guide

In an effort to bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, a new virtual smartphone wayfinding prairie forest guide is exploring ways to incorporate Indigenous perspectives on the land. Through the inclusion of traditional ecological knowledge, ethnobotany, Indigenous heritage, and culture, as well as Indigenous languages, the guide is aiming to provide new models of how to relate to the land and help restore relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

The guide will feature a comprehensive view of the land, plants, and animals found in the prairie forest. It will provide detailed descriptions of the plants and animals, as well as their ecological and cultural significance, as these are essential elements of the Indigenous worldview. In addition, the guide will also include GPS maps and audio recordings that will allow users to learn more about the history and stories of the land, providing a more immersive experience.

In addition, the guide will offer a unique model of wayfinding that is based on Indigenous philosophy. This includes a focus on the relationship between humans, plants, and animals, as well as the interconnectedness of all life. It also includes concepts such as respect, reciprocity, and responsibility, emphasizing the importance of respecting the land and the creatures that inhabit it.

By offering this unique model of wayfinding, the guide hopes to create bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities by providing new ways to view and interact with the land. By embracing the Indigenous perspectives on the land, it is possible to create a more inclusive and respectful relationship with the land, which can help to restore and build relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Interpretation: How Knowing Local Botany and Ecology Can Help iNaturalist Sightings

In recent years, the practice of afforestation, or the planting of new forests and trees, has become increasingly popular in both rural and urban areas. As these forests grow, it is important to keep track of their growth and development, and this is where iNaturalist comes in.

iNaturalist is an online platform where people can log and share their observations of plants and animals in their local area. These observations can be used to inform local conservation efforts, and also to help scientists better understand the complex relationships between plants, animals, and their environment.

However, a key component of iNaturalist is interpretation: the ability to interpret the observations made on the platform. It is here that an understanding of the local botany and ecology can make a huge difference. By recognizing the species, and understanding how they interact with their environment, it is possible to gain insight into the processes that are taking place, and to better assess the health of the ecosystem.

When it comes to afforestation, this understanding is especially important. It is not enough to simply plant trees and wait; it is essential to monitor the progress of the new woodland and be alert to any changes or threats. By studying the local botany and ecology, it is possible to recognize and anticipate trends, and to take appropriate action.

This is where interpretation comes in. By getting to know the local species and the environment, it is possible to better assess the health of the afforestation area, and to identify any potential threats or opportunities. This is where iNaturalist can help: by logging sightings of plants and animals, it can provide invaluable data that can inform decision making and conservation efforts.

Are you passionate about preserving the cultural and environmental heritage of the prairie afforestation areas of Saskatoon and area? Do you have a deep knowledge of the Indigenous and Métis communities of this area?

If so, we have an opportunity for you!

We are looking for an editor to join our team in creating an app dedicated to the preservation of the prairie afforestation areas serving Saskatoon and area. These two afforestation areas are situated on Treaty 6 territory, so we are particularly interested in applicants who have a deep knowledge of this land’s history and culture.

The app will be designed to educate users about the importance of preserving these forests, namely Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park, and to provide resources for those who wish to help protect and conserve them. Interpretation: A Key to Ecosystem Restoration in the 21st Century

The United Nations has declared 2021-2030 the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a groundbreaking initiative to address the pressing global challenge of environmental degradation. To ensure the success of the Decade, many new and innovative approaches to environmental stewardship must be adopted. One such approach is the use of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) in afforestation areas.

TEK is the accumulated traditional knowledge, practices and beliefs of indigenous and local communities that relate to their environment and the sustainable use of natural resources. It is based on generations of observation, experimentation, and adaptation to the environment, and is often deeply embedded within the cultural and spiritual values of the community. In afforestation areas, TEK can be used to identify the traditional and medicinal uses of the plants found in the area, protect species at risk, and manage the impact of invasive species.

Traditional and medicinal uses of plants in afforestation areas can be determined by tapping into TEK. Through TEK, local communities can identify the plants that grow in the area, their medicinal properties, and the traditional uses of the plants. This knowledge can be used to develop a comprehensive inventory of the area’s plant species and their uses, which can inform the conservation and management of the area.

TEK can also be used to identify species at risk and protect them from further degradation. Indigenous and local communities often have specialized knowledge on the natural environments in their area, including which species are rare or endangered. This knowledge can be used to prioritize conservation efforts and take action to protect these species.

Finally, TEK can be used to mitigate the impacts of invasive species in afforestation areas. TEK can provide information on how to identify, monitor, and manage invasive species, and on traditional methods for controlling them. For example, local communities can be engaged in efforts to remove invasive species and restore native habitats.

The 21st century must be one of environmental stewardship. The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration provides a unique opportunity to put TEK to use in afforestation areas, to protect species at risk, and to address the impacts of invasive species. By incorporating TEK into the restoration process, the Decade can be a crucial step in the global fight against environmental degradation.

Passion for outdoor education, reconciliation?

Are you a Cultural and Environmental Heritage Writer with a passion for outdoor education, reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons, and Aboriginal knowledge, culture and ethics?

Our public park space is seeking a Heritage Writer to fact check the interpretation of the Prairie Forest Guide app. This app provides outdoor education opportunities that promote the understanding of Aboriginal knowledge, culture and ethical standards. The Prairie Forest Guide app is part of an ongoing effort to support reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons in our public park space.

We are looking for a Heritage Writer who is knowledgeable in Aboriginal knowledge, culture and ethical standards. The ideal candidate must be able to fact check the interpretation of the Prairie Forest Guide app to ensure accuracy and authenticity. The Heritage Writer will also be responsible for providing guidance and support to the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. regarding cultural protocols and best practices in editing existing interpretive stories and write new stories as needed.

The successful candidate must have a background in Aboriginal studies, have a good understanding of the local Indigenous communities and cultures, and possess excellent writing and communication skills.

For an urban city like Saskatoon planning to meet one million residents by 2063, it is wise to show environmental leadership. The City of Saskatoon cannot do it alone, residents have to come to the forefront to help with pollinator garden planting.

Query? Should there be pollinator gardens planted in the two afforestation areas by making use of the Utility Right-Of-Ways? What would it mean? Checking out the ROW zones of the afforestation areas on Google Earth there would be:

There is the potential for a whopping 141,536 square meters of pollinator gardens at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area

AND

There is also potential for another 33,682 square metes of pollinator gardens at George Genereux Urban Regional Park

AND it would mean invasive species would be much much easier to keep in check, and the cost of maintenance would go way way down, and the numbers of pollinators would be greatly benefited by a total of 175,218 square meters of pollinator gardens. Well, part of it could be food forests if low growing berry bushes were planted in the boundary zone, and pollinator gardens in the wire zone of the right of ways.

Already from the closure of the east side of Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area to motorized vehicular traffic, the number of native plants is exponentially increasing without motorized vehicles using the urban regional park as a road bringing in invasive plants from everywhere. There is starting to be a rebound with an increase in native plants, and numbers of species already – without an anthropogenic management plan, just letting Mother Nature do the native flora plantings!

Cleanups are still possible, and together we can make a real difference in the health of our planet.” World Clean Up Day is Saturday September 19 the same day as the Saskatoon George Genereux Urban Regional Park clean up

The Province of Saskatchewan provides guidelines and reminders in these uncertain times about public safety in group gatherings, see the following listing. We will divide and conquer! Divide into groups, and conquer the trash! Never, ever will there be 30 or more people picking up the same trash pile!!!

Risks of COVID-19 REMINDERS

Individuals who are sick should stay home.
A physical distance of two metres should be maintained between people not from the same household or extended household.
Individuals should wash their hands before and after using park.
Avoid overcrowding. Individual groups must not exceed the restrictions on public gatherings.

Restrictions limiting the size of indoor and outdoor public and private gatherings remain in place. Effective July 28, 2020, indoor and outdoor gatherings may have a maximum of 30 people provided a two metre separation can be maintained at times between individuals who are not in the same household.” The gathering size restriction does not apply to:

“Settings where people are distributed into multiple rooms or buildings, and workplaces.”
In George Genereux Urban Regional Park we are all dividing up into separate workplaces whether we have more than or less than 30 people turn out. People may arrive for different shifts throughout the day, and go to separate areas to clean up throughout the park. PLEASE SIGN IN at the registration desk first and get your supplies 😉 Thanks.

1/2 mile by 1/2 mile in size or 147.8 acres, so there are lots of areas to have two metre separation

Practise proper hand hygiene:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water or, when unavailable, with hand sanitizer.
Refrain from touching your face.
Carry and use alcohol-based hand sanitizers before and after.

Areas we establish, such as the registration table, and visited by people will be kept clean and free from clutter and regularly cleaned with disinfectant!

Face masks are an additional measure we are all taking here today to protect people around you when physical distancing cannot be maintained or is unpredictable. You may use your own PPE, or know that we supply facemasks!
So celebrate World Clean Up Day on Saturday September 19 at George Genereux Urban Regional Park!
