End of Day 2 Results.

So, the City Nature Challenge has come halfway, day 2 of 4 days.

What a ride it has been! Let’s recap again about some highlights.

So when you want to check out how Saskatoon and area is faring there are two counters. One is on iNaturalist here. The other scoreboard is here, as the Saskatoon City Nature Challenge signed up to BioSmart.

What is the difference? Well BioSmart shows the addition of both iNaturalist and eBird observations! In two days this is how Saskatoon and area has fared on BioSmart;

So that is pretty sweet! Hats off to everyone.

The ever beautiful Crocus Pulsatilla nuttalliana has been recorded today as an observation!

There has been an observation of a “Puccinia monoica (Rust Fungus) that infects prairie plants in early spring, usually species of Rock Cress (Boechera/Arabis)” (the description given by Glen Lee)

There are no more white rabbit sightings, only brown White-tailed Jackrabbits *whew*.

Some very beautiful Wintergreens are making a carpet of green which is ever wonderful to see.

If you have never seen a wondrous Spring Avens, well they are in bud now, so that is pretty cool!

But besides saying what is recorded, we should mention what is NOT recorded. There are NO pelican sightings recorded yet! And yet we know they arrived April 21! NO beaver nor muskrat sightings. So now the race is on, to see who can get the first pelican, beaver and muskrat sighting! Can you do it? Check on eBird Saskatoon for end of April usual bird sightings, and then it will be discovered what there may be to look for still 😉

Out of all the potential birds of prey around and about Saskatoon which may be sighted such as hawks, owls, vultures, only two have been registered to date = a Turkey Vulture, and a Merlin.

You know what is a rather unique and interesting happenstance of the City Nature Challenge? iNat user svetlana-bogdanovich out of Ukraine has made the most observations! So in the middle of war-torn Ukraine, svetlana has made 505 observations in 2 days! That is pretty incredible.

User eduardoramirez-anapri from Madrid Spain has made 444 observations in the first 2 days.

Wildlife celebration

So, here we are at the commencement of National Wildlife Week.

There are a few initiatives to check out. One is the EcoFriendly Sask Wildlife App. It is a great virtual online introduction to wildlife. What a perfect way to get familiar with what you have seen outdoors in the afforestation areas.

The other fantastic activity to take part in is to take pictures via your smart phone app while in the afforestation areas using iNaturalist. There is a fantastic community to help you make identifications of what you have seen in the forest, and the app uses a special recognition software package.

World Wildlife Day

World Wildlife Day is March 3! What an opportunity!

What are you most interested in today? Maybe birds? More than one kind of bird, and identifying them! That would be fantastic to be on a bird scavenger hunt. So instead of staying at home with your “Where’s Waldo?” puzzles, come into the forest, and find birds, bird nests, and bird tracks.

Look in the bushy areas, and the swampy areas. Come out to the woods and immerse yourself in the sights, smells, and sounds of nature, and take away an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime of memories!

Download the winter bird checklist pamphlet and see how many of the birds in the listing you can see in the forest, and at the bird feeders! That is the scavenger hunt for today. If you email your Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area Bird sighting list to us or let us know your e-Bird user name, or iNaturalist user name for your afforestation area sightings, and you can be entered and be eligible for the prize draw taking place at the end of the month!

World Wildlife Day celebrates more than birds. Let us know the squirrels, or other animals, scat, footprints or animal signs you may see in the afforestation areas via email to be entered and be eligible for the prize draw taking place at the end of the month! Good Luck!

New eBird Hotspot

Thank you to Meghan Mickelson who added an eBird.org hotspot for the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. This is greatly appreciated and will help people document the birds arriving at the bird feeding stations which are located in the woodlands. As you explore the 326 acre greenspace can you locate all four bird-feeding station areas this winter?

This area is so very very large, and not many people are familiar with its 326 acre size which is 2 miles east to west and an irregular 1/2 mile north to south.

Due to the massive extent, there is a choice of eBird hotspots to assist you in your bird watching adventure!

REGION 1 WETLANDS AREA – OBSERVATIONS FOR ANY WETLANDS BIRDS AND WATERFOWL USING DUCKS UNLIMITED CHAPPELL MARSH CONSERVATION AREA AND THE CHAPPELL MARSH WETLANDS NORTH IN RICHARD ST BARBE BAKER AFFORESTATION AREAS INC.

Saskatoon–Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (from COC west to north Chappell Marsh, north of Twp Rd 362a)

REGION 3 WEST OF WETLANDS OUT TO THE SASKATOON ITALIAN CENTRE NEAR SASKATCHEWAN HIGHWAY 7

Saskatoon–Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (from Cedar Villa Rd east to north Chappell Marsh)

There are many naturalists who park on the Cedar Villa Road (Twp Rd 362-A) and make Chappell Marsh hot spot e-Bird observations of the waterfowl and wetlands birds on the north and south sides of the Chappell Marsh wetlands when they are not under ice. It doesn’t take much of a disturbance, and the birds fly to safety from one area of the water to the other across the roadway utilizing both sides of the wetlands.

The citizens of Saskatoon and area are so very lucky and fortunate for the environmental leadership shown by the City of Saskatoon Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area [north side] and by Ducks Unlimited Chappell Marsh Conservation Area in the RM of Corman Park 344 [south side] who are both preserving the wetlands of the West Swale.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. as a new environmental non profit charity has learned quite a lot from the Meewasin Conservation Authority and how they are guided by their mission and five guiding principles. As the Meewasin manages a small portion of the two afforestation areas it is great to have a role model that the non profit environmental charity, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc., can look up to and receive guidance from.

Now, thanks to Mickelson there is also a eBird.org hotspot for the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. This act of kindness will go a long way to support the new bird feeding stations located in the forest, and the bird lovers who venture out that way in the city.

So now for birders there is more than one great method to document birds at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area! An e-bird hotspot for the wetlands of Chappell Marsh, and an e-Bird hotspot for the woodlands of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. Who could ask for anything more?

As a challenge for the Winter Staycation Take It Outside program, record on iNaturalist or the eBird hotspot for Chappell Marsh the wetlands birds which you have sighted. The International Day of Action for Rivers Pamphlet contains a water birds checklist as an indicator of what might be sighted. The Geese and some ducks are back already (March 11)

Birds!

Well it is now the Great Canadian Birdathon, beginning noon Friday May 8 and ending at noon the next day, May 9th, which also matches up with a major event in the bird world: eBird’s Global Big Day. Register now for the Great Canadian Birdathon, or sign up to Cornell Birds for the e-Bird Global Big Day.

The wetlands at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area are shared with Chappell Marsh Conservation Area. The water body is in the West Swale and is called Chappell Marsh. On eBird there is the Chappell Marsh “Hot Spot” where birders record birds which are spotted on either side of Cedar Villa Road (Township Road 362A)

There are also folks recording on iNaturalist the biodiversity and birds which are found at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park. All you have to do is download the smart phone app on your phone. Go out, and use the app to take pictures, and it will be your field guide to help in the identification! Take part in the iNaturalist Project: “The Social Distancing BioBlitz of 2020! Mar 17, 2020 – May 31, 2020”, or the project “Phenology Test”, or perhaps the “Observations from Isolation” project.

e-Bird also has a mobile App for download to make bird sighting easier.
