Making a Difference: Environmental Preservation and Sustainable Development Goals

As an avid nature lover, you understand the importance of preserving our planet’s ecosystems and the unique species that inhabit them. With your donation, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas will be able to make a significant environmental impact on providing education and awareness around preserving species at risk, restoring ecosystems, and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Saskatoon Afforestation Areas comprise woodlands, meadows, and wetlands and are home to a wide variety of plant and animal species.

One of the key ways that the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas will use your donation is through citizen science bio blitzes identifying invasive plant species that threaten the native plant and animal populations. This ecological restoration project will help to preserve species at risk and restore balance to the ecosystem.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas are committed to working towards Life on Land, Life Under Water, Climate Action, and Sustainable Cities. Enlisting community support through tours and engagement events park stewards understand the mandate of the City of Saskatoon and Meewasin who aim towards preserving the natural environment and restoring ecosystems, the organization is taking concrete action towards achieving these goals.

For example, advocating for the removal of invasive plant species and encouraging the replanting native ones, the organization is promoting sustainable land use practices and contributing to the Life on Land and Climate Action goals. On behalf of everyone who are “Stewards of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area”, a thank you is extended to Maxie’s Excavating | Road Construction, Railway Constrction, Aggregate Supply, Industrial Site Grading in Saskatoon, SK for your donation of time, and equipment use. Maxie’s Excavating kindly provided the prerequisite ability and service of loading the barriers, transport, offloading and placement on site was Maxie’s Excavating. This feat took place in two separate loads on different days. The use of the specialized equipment -flatbed trailer, truck and loader- and the work of two operators was indeed very much appreciated. Your generosity, will not go unnoticed, and we truly hope that the wildlife habitat corridor can be retained as a spectacular environment following these efforts to mitigate motorized vehicle traffic into the woodlands. Those who creat and groom trails in the Richard St. Barbe Baker afforestation area, will also truly appreciate their work not being destroyed by motorized vehicles.

The highlight of preserving the afforestation area for this generation, and for future generations to come has been to learn of the generosity of Saskatoon, the kindness of the volunteers, and the action of the business community in preserving the environment and the trails with this support.

What was Richard St. Barbe Baker’s mission, that he imparted to the Watu Wa Miti, the very first forest scouts or forest guides? To protect the native forest, plant ten native trees each year, and take care of trees everywhere.

Thanks to sponsorship received from Sk Energy we are able to attend to expenses incurred during the “Clean-Up Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area” Service Project. Community associations in the south west area of the city of Saskatoon Montgomery Place, Cedar Villa Esates, and many more, environmnental and bicycle groups along with youth groups and concerned citizens have come together in response to improving their community. If you have any great stories about using the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, or if you come across a unique item during the clean up please send these ancedotes in to be posted online!

Besides helping with the many and several expenses of the clean up campaign, SK Energy has kindly allocated to the clean up effort a quantity of lanyards which we will very assuredly hand out at the beginning of each shift, indeed. Such is the kindness and the thoughtfulness of Sk Energy, in their support of this community undertaking. During the clean up, do keep your eyes open we will have SK Energy banners on the clean up site tables, the Stewards proud of the grant Sk Energy has bestowed upon the afforestation area and the community involved in this spectacular initiative.

It is truly amazing the costs that arise during a clean up effort, when it encompasses the size of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. We are seeking to have a safe clean up effort for all the wonderful volunteers who have said that they will make it out this year. Thank you very much!

What was Richard St. Barbe Baker’s mission, that he imparted to the Watu Wa Miti, the very first forest scouts or forest guides? To protect the native forest, plant ten native trees each year, and take care of trees everywhere.

To help protect the environment, it will be best to find a way to avoid the use of disposable cups and bottle at event. Please bring a water bottle and/ or travel mug to the clean up event as disposable cups and disposable bottles will not be available for use.
