Thanks to you contributions, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas can offer place based educational learning trips to the afforestation areas helping to sponsor portable toilet rentals or offset bus trip fees to nature immersion classes. Because of you, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas can protect the wildlife habitats, the flora and fauna from illegal trespass and illegal dumping as your contribution goes towards trash bags for clean ups, wildlife friendly fencing and the tagging of the fencing.

The Clean Green Community Scene followed special precautions, and had some tremendous results! It is truly a continual community effort to keep our urban regional parks in the south west of the City of Saskatoon clean and beautiful. With you help, this is an area we can be proud of.

George Genereux Park

George Genereux Park cleanup

On Sept. 19, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. were impressed to see people come out to George Genereux Urban Regional Park to clean up garbage left behind by those contractors and people too lazy or too cheap to use the nearby landfill.

There are many who enjoy this forest. The Saskatoon Nature Society bands birds; dog walkers and foresters revel in the delights of the woodlands; citizen scientists record the flora and fauna on iNaturalist and mothers enjoy the scenery with their children and infants.

During these weird times, community members and businesses cooperated in preserving the environment at George Genereux Park. We were impressed with the results — more than 9,270 kilograms (204,367 pounds) was removed from the park. Just in time for National Forest Week, the forest has been loved and cared for.

Our team is very impressed to see people who are concerned about parks. These two areas were created in 1979, the same year as Chief Whitecap Park, Cranberry Flats Conservation Area and Beaver Creek.

We think that not too many residents in the City of Saskatoon know about Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (330 acres) and George Genereux Urban Regional Park (147.9 acres) in the very southwest of the city; they are Saskatoon’s best kept secrets and locations where it is easy to maintain social distancing.

It is very encouraging and uplifting that several community members are concerned enough with the forests to wish to preserve their beauty, legacy and heritage.

Divide and Conquer!

Rubenstein Manager of the Great Global Cleanup says; “This pandemic has not stopped the pollution of our environment — and it won’t stop us either. Cleanups are still possible, and together we can make a real difference in the health of our planet.” World Clean Up Day is Saturday September 19 the same day as the Saskatoon George Genereux Urban Regional Park clean up

The Province of Saskatchewan provides guidelines and reminders in these uncertain times about public safety in group gatherings, see the following listing. We will divide and conquer! Divide into groups, and conquer the trash! Never, ever will there be 30 or more people picking up the same trash pile!!!

Risks of COVID-19 REMINDERS

• Individuals who are sick should stay home.
• A physical distance of two metres should be maintained between people not from the same household or extended household.
• Individuals should wash their hands before and after using park.
• Avoid overcrowding. Individual groups must not exceed the restrictions on public gatherings. 

Restrictions limiting the size of indoor and outdoor public and private gatherings remain in place. Effective July 28, 2020, indoor and outdoor gatherings may have a maximum of 30 people provided a two metre separation can be maintained at times between individuals who are not in the same household.”  The gathering size restriction does not apply to:

• “Settings where people are distributed into multiple rooms or buildings, and workplaces.” 
• In George Genereux Urban Regional Park we are all dividing up into separate workplaces whether we have more than or less than 30 people turn out. People may arrive for different shifts throughout the day, and go to separate areas to clean up throughout the park. PLEASE SIGN IN at the registration desk first and get your supplies 😉 Thanks.

George Genereux Urban Regional Park is

1/2 mile by 1/2 mile in size or 147.8 acres, so there are lots of areas to have two metre separation

Practise proper hand hygiene:

• Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water or, when unavailable, with hand sanitizer.
• Refrain from touching your face.
• Carry and use alcohol-based hand sanitizers before and after.

Areas we establish, such as the registration table, and visited by people will be kept clean and free from clutter and regularly cleaned with disinfectant!

• Face masks  are an additional measure we are all taking here today to protect people around you when physical distancing cannot be maintained or is unpredictable.  You may use your own PPE, or know that we supply facemasks!
• So celebrate World Clean Up Day on Saturday September 19 at George Genereux Urban Regional Park!

The George Genereux Urban Regional Park clean up is happening Saturday September 19 when the City of Saskatoon will kindly arrange to drop off a large Loraas disposal bin at the site where it will be handy from 9:00am to 5:00pm

George Genereux Urban Regional Park is located in the West Swale, the current name of the Pleistocene era Yorath Island Glacial Spillway.  The Yorath Island Glacial Spillway or West Swale was once a river connecting the Glacial North Saskatchewan river valley and Glacial Rice Lake with -at the time- South Saskatchewan  Glacial Lake.  This span of land is still conducting water through above ground wetlands, and underground water springs and channels between the North Saskatchewan River and the South Saskatchewan River.  Keeping this area without pollutants and litter, also keeps the City of Saskatoon water clean and fresh.  Cleaning the forest also restores this naturalize site started as a tree nursery in 1972, and it is now an urban regional park, and an amazing nature viewing site.

If anyone has the wherewithal to conduct a cleanup by themselves, that is also wonderful!  The Meewasin cleanup has bins around the city and people can go out to George Genereux Urban Regional Park anytime between now and September 31!  The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Area and Meewasin can accommodate this wonderful individual endeavour and supply bags to you!  How? friendsafforestation@gmail.com or 306.380.5368

On Saturday, September 19, George Genereux Urban Regional Park is about 1/2 mile square  -147.8 acres- in size, so it should be easy to social distance.  We will take COVID-19 precautions, to do everything we can during phase 4 of the province’s opening to keep all volunteers safe. What are we doing?  Contact us at friendsafforestation@gmail.com or 306.380.5368 for our precautions!  We are even rustling up ways to give out volunteers free facemasks on Sat. Sept. 19 in case volunteers come closer than 6 feet!  😉

Zero Waste

“To achieve true sustainability, we must reduce our ‘garbage index” – that which we permanently throw away into the environment that will not be naturally recycled for reuse – to near zero. Productive activities must be organized as closed systems. Minerals and other nonbiodegradable resources, once taken from the ground, must become a part of society’s permanent capital stock and be recycled in perpetuity. Organic materials may be disposed into the natural ecosystems, but only in ways that assure that they are absorbed back into the natural production system.”

“Waste is an urgent global issue. Per capita waste generation has risen markedly in 50 years and Canadians produce the most garbage per capita when compared to 16 other OECD [Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development ] nations ~ a whopping 777 kilograms [1713 pounds] per person per year.^NZWC” Zero waste means the elimination of waste at the source of waste generation, rather than managing waste, and searching for methods of managing waste created to minimize environmental management. “Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them.^Eco-cycle“

The vision of moving away from a “Take – Make – Dispose” paradigm, and shifting towards a circular economy without waste. Can you imagine it ~ a home without a garbage can, as everything is made with an aim of recycling, re-manufacturing, -refurbishing, repair and maintenance for long lasting use. Emissions, and energy leakages are reduced, and resources needed for supply are minimized. The vision is bold, “in a truly circular economy, where waste becomes nutrients and energy is renewable, economic growth would be decoupled from environmental restraints.^Greenbiz”

As Professor Cristina Trois summarizes, “A green economy places importance on moving towards a resource efficient and zero waste society. Zero waste is a long – term vision that ultimately envisages a thriving society that exists within nature’s resource constraints and its ability to assimilate waste. Zero waste policy and resource ~ efficiency measures are intrinsically linked in a mutually beneficial way. By improving resource efficiency and moving towards zero waste, countries can tackle local environmental problems, address climate change, ensure energy security, preserve natural capital, improve economic competitiveness, and pursue social benefits, ultimately contributing to the promotion of a green economy.^Programme”

Clean and Green!!

In continents and countries the anthropo-geographer looks to see not what reliefs are present, but how they are distributed. The plains, indeed, have been both source and recipient of every form of historical movement. Temperate grasslands have an innate and prevailing fitness for agriculture, trade and intercourse. They are favored regions for the final massing of a settled population.

Well-watered lowlands invite expansion, ethnic, commercial and political. In these areas the whole range of historical movements meet few obstacles beyond the waters gathering in their runnels and the forests nourished in their rich soils. The vast level plains of the earth have found their distinctive and lasting historical importance in the fact of their large and unbounded surface.

And, looking far ahead, can you hear the heart of the West Swale lowlands beating as one with the heart of the Bluegrass, and both beating as one with the heart of the world.

In the plains geography makes for fusion. Without boundary or barrier, there are no secluded corners where settlements could entrench themselves and preserve their individual identity. There is, as a point in fact, a vast melting-pot, which has succeeded in amalgamating the most diverse elements.

The more flat and featureless a prairie is, the more important become even the slightest surface irregularities which can draw faint dividing lines among the population. Here a gentle land-swell, river, lake, forest, or water-soaked wetlands serves as boundary. Especially apparent is the differentiating influence of difference of soils. Gravel and alluvium, sand and clay, limestone and more recent marine sediments, emphasize small geographical differences.

The meager rainfall of the aspen parkland ecosystem eliminates forests and restricts vegetation to aspen bluffs, grasses, sedges and those forms which can survive a prolonged summer drought and require a short period of growth.

The grasslands, the beloved Blue-grass land, known to the Saskatchewan pioneer and indigenous civilization developed historical importance only after the domestication of cattle, sheep, goats, bison, and horses. This step in progress resulted in the evolution of peoples who renounced the precarious subsistence of the chase and escaped the drudgery of agriculture, to devote themselves to pastoral life.

Historically, however, environment determined the nomadic habits of the prairie dweller. The distribution of pasture and water fixes the scope and the rate of his wandering; these in turn depend upon geographic conditions and vary with the season.

Heredity and environment act and react upon each other with the regularity and inevitability of succession of night and day. Neither tells the whole story; together they make up the sum of life; of the generations that are to come!

Heredity and environment create the make up of the geography of the eco-system, the physical biome of an area.

This process has been best described by Ellen Churchill Semple, Ellen Churchill Semple (January 8, 1863 – May 8, 1932) a geographer who focused on anthropogeography, environmentalism, and “environmental determinism”. An analysis of Semple’s works is one theory which unzips the heredity and environment of the Saskatchewan prairies, the world’s most endangered ecosystem.

The heredity and environment of the afforestation area has been examined. The afforestation areas are within the larger context of the West Swale. What is the heredity and environment of the West Swale?
