Green Spaces Decimated!

November 6 is the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.

Did you know this? “Forest cover in Vietnam declined by 50 percent between 1945 and 1980. During the Vietnam War, U.S. forces sprayed 72 million liters of herbicides, including Agent Orange, on the Vietnamese countryside and dropped roughly 13 million tons of bombs, according to Jakarta-based forestry expert Chris Lang. An Australia-based forestry expert, Tran Lam Dong, reports that defoliants destroyed about 7,700 square miles of forests — six percent of Vietnam’s total land area.”

And what about this, did you know about this? “During World War II, huge swaths of forested countryside were cut down to provide energy for Japan’s war efforts.”

Did you know that the “Damage Done To Europe’s Forests By The World Wars – With Many Effects Still Being Felt Today”

“The cities of Dresden and Hamburg saw their green spaces decimated by WWII.”

That is food for thought and now, did you know this?

There is more about Richard St. Barbe Baker, global conservationist and humanitarian. There is a film. It is not an ordinary film, it includes global conservationists who knew Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889-1982) aka Baba Wya Miti Loving Father of Trees. A heritage documentary with spotlights on Richard St. Barbe Baker and these notable conservationists are part of a virtual film on Saturday, November 6, 1:00 pm SK time (CT)

The film, The Legacy of Saskatoon’s Hidden Forest, highlights the 326-acre man-made forest on the prairies that was named after Richard St. Barbe Baker.

Celebrate with us the extraordinary achievements of Richard St Barbe Baker, aka Man of the Trees, 50 years after he was bestowed his honorary Doctorate of Laws at the University of Saskatchewan by chancellor John G. Diefenbaker.

Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Welcomes Clean up Support From Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westgate Plaza

On June 5, the clean green community scene volunteer clean up of George Genereux Park takes place in Saskatoon.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. are very appreciative of the support and help offered by Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza for the June 5 clean up. They went above and beyond in the fall of 2020, and now volunteers are coming out on Saturday June 5 – very likely for the last time for a major huge afforestation area clean up, and again, Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza is providing support. Refreshments for volunteers is so greatly appreciated, and will go a long way for the well being of all the volunteers who will keep hydrated and sustained with individual snacks.

Support such is this by Ivan and Ila’s No Frills Store in Westage Plaza is vital, very much acknowledged and appreciated by the volunteers who all came out on Saturday June 5 between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. Users to the George Genereux Urban Regional Park include families, dog walkers, citizen scientists doing bio-blitzes, walkers, bird-bander, cyclists who all enjoy the mixed man-made forest on the prairies. In the fall of 2020 there was Sep 19 2020 kg 9270 pounds and on Oct 20 2016 1500kg or 3,307 pounds of trash removed. Even though volunteers worked tirelessly, there were still trash piles left at the end of the two cleanups. George Genereux Urban Regional Park becomes 50 years old in 2022 and this is the first environmental protection event and trash clean up afforded this urban regional park, so that is why there is another volunteer clean up is needed on June 5, 2021.

All this will create a much safer environment for the general public and for the health of the environment. Is that not what June 5, day is all about?

And Ivan and Ila helped to act locally and think globally on World Environment Day. Isn’t it ever so wonderful to have safe urban regional parks, safe wildlife habitats and to also keep the volunteers safe and hydrated?

3 Things Everyone Knows About Clean-ups That You Don’t

While you are out at the George Genereux Urban Regional Park on June 5 helping out with the Clean Green Community Scene, you are actually taking part in the first day of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration!

The UN Virtual Launch Gala will take place June 4-5. From the beginner’s guide on eco-system restoration: “This year, 5 June, World Environment Day, marks the official launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a 10-year push to halt and reverse the decline of the natural world. “

Did you know that to date more than 25,030 kg or 55,181.7 pounds of trash have been removed from the Saskatoon afforestation areas eco-system?

Now that SK is moving into Step One which will see the cautious easing of public health measures across the province. New Changes to public health orders in Step One will include:

Limit of 150 people at public outdoor gatherings; and <—- great news for the George Genereux Park clean up on Saturday June 5, but now needs massive networking and sharing of information via email blitz, word of mouth etc. (please and thank you) The park is 147.8 acres in size about 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile square, so lots of room to socially distance, and we have trail maps! Refreshments! Extra facemasks!

Walk Lightly on the Earth

Global Recycling Day is very important when it comes to thinking about the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas. Members of the public, South West Off Leash Recreation Area dog walkers, the Stewards and Stakeholders of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, The Fatlanders Fat Tire Brigade, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. all have come out to the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and to George Genereux Urban Regional Park for “Clean Green Community Scene” volunteer clean ups to restore these urban regional parks to amazing winter wonderland green spaces which are enjoyed all year around.

Recycling is so, so very important when you see what was collected during the various clean up days. There were toys which would have been so much appreciated by another family. Clothing was discarded in the urban regional park which could have been put to much better use. Very environmentally hazardous items were discarded like flammable oil and tires which are very disastrous in a greenspace. Furniture would have been much better displayed in someone’s home rather than being ruined by ticks, rain, mice, and other vermin in the forest.

Did you know the City of Saskatoon has some amazing recycling programs?

We can compost at the compost areas in town.

SARCAN has newspaper and cardboard depots

Citizens can recycle paint, and electronics at SARCAN along with their bottles, and cans.

Residents can take in clothing, toys, household or garage items to a number of thrift stores

Furniture is welcome at many thrift and second hand stores also

Metal appliances can be turned in for cash

Did you know that the City of Saskatoon landfill also has an eco-centre? Used oil, antifreeze, oil filters and diesel exhaust fluid can make use of the eco-centre

The City of Saskatoon has arranged an amazing landfill so the residents do not get typhoid and diptheria! And we should use it rather than the environment.

The City of Saskatoon also collaborates with Community Associations for spring/fall community clean ups to help residents if they see litter accumulating in the neighbourhood which is amazing for sure. Cleaning up their parks, and streets, and alleyways is a great way to have a safe and healthy neighbourhood for our children to grow up in.

George Genereux Urban Regional Park Clean Up Certificate and Prizes Saturday September 19

Waste Reduction Week is October 19 – 25 2020, the third week in October. Download your Waste Reduction Kit today! Donate clothes and household goods, and recycle them rather than letting them be destroyed in an amazing greenspace, the home to plants and animals. Can you be successful on the waste free challenge?

The facts that people use amazing urban regional parks for their waste and trash is deplorable. Volunteers removed waste amounting to more than 15,340 kg on the following days

3,410 kg Richard-St-Barb-Baker-Afforestation-Area October 3

2,660 kg from George Genereux Urban Park October 3

9,270 kg from George Genereux Urban Park September 19

15,340 kg in TOTAL which works out to 16.9 US tons – 33,818.9 pounds – 15.1 Imperial Tons – 15.34 tonnes

That is way, way too much garbage in a park where families, birdwatchers, hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers all come together to enjoy the landscapes and viewscapes. What must go through peoples heads to go into a forest greenspace and dump trash? Disgusting!

George Genereux Urban Regional Park, Saskatoon, SK October 3 clean up

Did you know that the Ministry of the Environment has a confidential Turn in Poachers and Polluters (TIPP) Anyone at all can report, and the webpage says how to do it safely, and still protect the environment! If you use and enjoy these greenspace urban regional parks, please use TIPPS. As a result of the two aforementioned clean ups, personal identification was found in the thrown away garbage, and reported. The identification was followed up on by authorities.

Tires in Saskatchewan

Disposing of tires along the side of a road, or in a park is detrimental to the environment, and a fire hazard. Saskatchewan has an awesome tire recycling program for residents to take advantage of!

Next time you change your tires, the service department installing the new tires will often recycle your used tires for you. If you choose to change your tires yourself, please make use of the Tire Stewardship Program of Saskatchewan! All you have to do during COVID is call ahead, that is so easy!

There are definitely hazards of used tires in the environment as follows.

Tires have potential for tire fires which produce acid smoke harmful to humans and the environment as well as leaves behind a oily residue. Tire fires are not extinguishable and in some instances burn for several weeks.
SFGate states that “tires that are thrown away instead of recycled can cause serious environmental problems. The issues arise when the chemicals they contain are released into the environment — the breakdown of tires releases hazardous wastes. Tires contain oils that contaminate the soil; they also consist of heavy metals such as lead, that can persist in the environment and accumulate over time.”
Ecogreen goes on to say…”Some of these chemicals… are carcinogenic and mutagenic”
