At ethnobotany parks, visitors can explore the traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples, learn about the traditional uses of plants and explore the connection between plants and culture.

The concept of ethnobotany park interpretation is based on the idea that visitors can learn about the environment and Indigenous cultures in a respectful and meaningful way. This type of interpretation allows for a deeper understanding of the connection between plants, people and culture, and provides a unique opportunity for reconciliation between cultures in the forest.

Contract term position stage one; Cultural and Environmental Heritage Writer

Are you an experienced writer and editor with a deep knowledge of Indigenous and Métis history? Do you have the passion and skill to create high-quality interpretive stories that bring the past to life? If so, then we are looking for you!

We are an organization working on a project to create a digital wayfinding app for afforestation areas. We are seeking an experienced Cultural and Environmental Heritage Writer to help us develop and review existing virtual markers that will bring to life the Indigenous and Métis history of the land.

As a Cultural and Environmental Heritage Writer, you will be responsible for researching and creating stories that accurately reflect the history of the land. You will be expected to use your writing and editing skills to ensure that the stories are well written and factually accurate. You will also be responsible for fact-checking the new and existing stories to ensure accuracy.

Experience with Indigenous and Métis history is essential for this position. We are looking for someone who is passionate about telling stories that bring the past to life and who can create stories that accurately reflect the history of the land.

In addition to your writing and editing skills, we are looking for someone who is a team player and who can work with other members of the project team to ensure that the stories are accurate and engaging.

Are you passionate about the Canadian Prairies and their unique cultural and environmental heritage? Do you have a degree in education, as well as hands-on success and experience in outdoor and environmental education learning experiences? If so, then you may be the perfect fit for the position of Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide App editor.

The Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide App is an innovative educational tool that seeks to promote reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous persons. It focuses on the social and natural aspects of the prairies and allows users to explore and learn about the unique culture and environment of the area.

As the App editor, you will be responsible for ensuring the content of the App is accurate and up-to-date. You will work with a team of designers, developers, and content specialists to create an engaging and informative experience for users. Additionally, you will be responsible for editing existing App stories, and including additional relevant content which is missing.

The ideal candidate for this position should have a degree in education or a related field and experience in outdoor and environmental education learning experiences. We are currently seeking an experienced Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide app editor for a project during the United Nations Decade on Ecological Restoration. This project will involve creating an app that will provide information on the traditional and medicinal uses of plants found in the afforestation areas, as well as dealing with invasive species and their impact, and protecting species at risk.

The ideal candidate should have:

An advanced knowledge of Traditional Ecological Knowledge and its application in afforestation areas
Experience creating and editing apps
Knowledge of dealing with invasive species, protecting species at risk, and using traditional and medicinal uses of plants
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Seeking a Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide App Editor (contract position)

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. is looking for a passionate individual to join a project to create an interactive mobile app that will help promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons regarding perspectives on this 474 acres of greenspace land. The app will provide a platform for cross-cultural learning about the flora, fauna, and historic and cultural history of this land.

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. is looking for an experienced and creative app editor who can create an engaging and informative interactive app experience. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with the team to create an interactive guide that educates and engages users in an immersive and interactive way.

The app editor will work with the development team to create an intuitive user experience while incorporating features that will make the app interactive and engaging. The app editor will be responsible for researching and gathering information on the flora, fauna, and historic and cultural history of the land, as well as working with the development team to create visuals and audio elements.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures, as well as experience with app editing and development. The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse team.

Indigenous Perspective

We are so excited that our project is recognized by SK Arts, a public arts funder. We are very thankful that due to receiving this grant from SK Arts, our project will now be able to move forward in a timely manner to bring an Indigenous perspective to interpreting the heritage and ecology of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the George Genereux Urban Regional park, our two Saskatoon afforestation areas replete in cultural, geographical, historical, and natural heritage.

The Indigenous and Métis history of the land that is part of the afforestation areas is one of the many stories which can be told. The Old Bone Trail, by which Métis brought buffalo bones to the rail yards in Saskatoon, passed through the RSBBAA.

There is a wealth of heritage from identifying traditional connections with nature, as well as present day local plant names and the use of native plants for healing and medicinal purposes.

Thank you kindly for your consideration in this matter. This is a wonderful project for the 50th anniversary of our Saskatoon Afforestation Areas indeed.

This is in keeping with the spirit of Witaskêwin, living together on the land. We believe this project can be part of an effective long-term strategy to focus our vision on this ideal. In a significant way this project allows the past to meet the present and future. The rich geological, historical, natural, and cultural heritage of the areas honours where we have been. Science, conservation, and hands on learning and interpretive education increases awareness of the City’s environmental goals to ensure our strategic goals are aligned into the future.

If we commemorate, honour and respect the past, and celebrate the present we can provide a legacy for the future. These stories provide residents and visitors alike, the story of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, George Genereux Urban Regional Park, and the West Swale to increase the awareness of the mosaic of unique natural, cultural, geological and historic features.

The Old Bone Trail

The Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area has a heritage trail running through it. The Old Bone Trail is part of its history.

Where the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas once told a partial story including only what may be only the “what” and “how” stories of The Old Bone Trail, there was no mention as to “why” The Old Bone Trail came to exist.

So, if you are wondering where the previous Old Bone Trail posts have gone they have been removed in the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation until such time as a more complete story or series of stories can be told relating the entire heritage and history.

A real-life Saskatoon mystery. Search for the Missing Linden!

On June 4 and 5, 1984 – also celebrating World Environment Day – Saskatoon hosted the founding conference of the Richard St Barbe Baker foundation. The conference was to promote the wise use and conservation of the world’s tree resources.

Now, then as part of the aforementioned conference ceremonies, a Linden tree, Tiliaceae, was planted at two locations in Saskatoon; Diefenbaker Center and at the west side entrance of Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

Reconciliation through Healing Forests

A forest can help people heal and connect them with nature. With this in mind, Peter Croal (retired CIDA Environment Specialist) and Patricia Stirbys (legal and Indigenous Relations specialist) – inspired by the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission report and its Calls to Action to strengthen relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples – developed the National Healing Forests initiative. A Healing Forest project brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous neighbours to plan and develop green spaces where survivors and families of the Residential School legacy, as well as all Canadians, can heal, do ceremony, reflect, discuss and meditate. This reconciliation project is community-led and totally grassroots.

This presentation outlines a brief history of the residential school system and explains how communities and institutions can create their own Healing Forest space for reconciliation.

We are grateful for this presentation by Patricia Stirbys (Indigenous relations specialist) and Peter Croal (P. Geol. International Environment and Development Advisor), co-founders of the National Healing Forests initiative.

This virtual connection provides a time to learn more about the National Healing Forests in this era of Truth and Reconciliation.

This program for National Forest Week is brought to you by the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas an environmental non-profit charity that was created to preserve and restore the 326-acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the 148-acre George Genereux Urban Regional Park. Our work reinforces the 1979 City Council decision designating these afforestation areas on the western fringe of Saskatoon to “be preserved in perpetuity.” They are important habitat for wildlife as well as semi-wild public spaces for recreation and nature immersion. The larger of these two areas is named after Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889-1982), who has been called the “first global conservationist” and in recognition of this he was made the first Honorary Life Member of the World Wildlife Fund in 1969. A British forester who also homesteaded and studied in Saskatoon, he dedicated his entire life unfailingly to the preservation and planting of trees and forests.
