City Nature Challenge Results

To see the results and observations for our involvement in the City Nature Challenge, check out both iNaturalist Saskatoon and Area AND BioSmart portal for Saskatoon and Area. In Saskatoon we had amazing support from the City of Saskatoon for the City Nature Challenge.

The Saskatoon Nature Society came on board, and really pulled through! The City of Saskatoon entomologist, Sydney Worthy, was host at an insect workshop which helped the CNC and this workshop is still having ripple effects through the school system. The Saskatchewan Mycological Working Group were host to a Fungi and Lichen Workshop which likewise is having amazing spin-offs! Appreciation is extended to the Prairie Conservation Action Plan for hosting a City Nature Challenge presentation for the Native Prairie Speakers Series. For these and other City Nature Challenge virtual webinars and workshops, see YouTube. Thanks to the University of Saskatchewan environment and sustainability classes for their contributions. The classrooms of students from the Saskatoon Public School Board and the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools were wonderful to see the student enthusiasm at both Brightwater at the afforestation areas, and around Saskatoon. Thanks to the Meewasin staff at Beaver Creek for helping out! Thank you to the Canadian Wildlife Federation WILD group for their assistance. Appreciations and rounds of applause to @lysandra, @MaryKrieger, @sarasims, Jacey Bell, Donovan Thiessen, andall the iNaturalist Observers and Identifiers. Thanks to the City of Saskatoon, Saskatoon Nature Society, SaskTel, SaskPower, SaskEnergy, Mosaic, EcoFriendly West were super to help with the logistics for the planning this event. It was wonderful to meet the organizing crew of the Canadian Wildlife Federation, California Academy of Sciences, Natural History Museum Los Angeles County. In the words of Richard St. Barbe Baker, Twihamwe or pull together echoes the Province of Saskatchewan Motto, Multis e gentibus vires (From Many Peoples Strength). This pulling together happened during the first ever Saskatoon City Nature Challenge and our statistics show we had the second highest results for the prairie provinces in Canada – imagine that! What a show of support for wildlife and conservation! The Global City Nature Challenge Statistics show an amazing result: 1,570,392 Observations worldwide. 50,270 Total Species were observed Globally. 64,238 People around the World took part.

Send in your cool/unusual/rare sightings! What is way interesting during the City Nature Challenge April 29- May 2? That is only three days away! Wow

For rare sightings during the City Nature Challenge CNCYXE don’t place your iNat observation on private but do protect your rare sightings with obscured! And do let us know, so that the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County can run a press release!

In Saskatoon and area we are taking part in #CNC2022! Join us between April 29 – May 2 as we take part in this International initiative to collect information about the wildlife flourishing in Saskatoon and area.

Researchers, school groups, citizens and wildlife enthusiasts across the world will be taking part in this race against the clock to put nature on the map, submitting photos and observations of wildlife in their neighbourhoods and greenspaces through the free, easy to use iNaturalist smart phone app.

New finds! Species that haven’t been recorded in particular areas before. Important finds of rare/endangered/threatened species. Observations that have a great story that go along with them. Really cool photos. Fun finds!

Connect with nature, find out what is really in the forest! What will you discover? Come out and explore George Genereux Park. This event provides a snapshot of nature, ecology and the environment out at George Genereux Park in Saskatoon. It shows how healthy the environment is. It is great for young, families, youth groups. botanists, and the general public to have fun in nature. It sharpens your “Where’s Waldo?” skills and helps to become aware of your surroundings. Caterpillars, butterflies, birds, mushrooms, flowers, squirrels, are all various life forms to take pictures of with the iNaturalist app downloaded on your smart phone. It is amazing just how many of the bio-blitzes undertaken have found another species at risk to be aware of in the afforestation areas.

National Forest Week The last full week of September. Maple Leaf Day the Wednesday of that week.

This program for National Forest Week is brought to you by the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas an environmental non-profit charity that was created to preserve and restore the 326-acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the 148-acre George Genereux Urban Regional Park. Our work reinforces the 1979 City Council decision designating these afforestation areas on the western fringe of Saskatoon to “be preserved in perpetuity.” They are important habitat for wildlife as well as semi-wild public spaces for recreation and nature immersion. The larger of these two areas is named after Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889-1982), who has been called the “first global conservationist” and in recognition of this he was made the first Honorary Life Member of the World Wildlife Fund in 1969. A British forester who also homesteaded and studied in Saskatoon, he dedicated his entire life unfailingly to the preservation and planting of trees and forests.

Let’s talk Forest

A project which the Canadian Wildlife Federation WILD Group is underway. A COVID initiative featuring little trail messages introduces this youth group – young men and women between 14-17 who have come out to the afforestation area and walked along the trails.

Sadly some of the signs the teenagers have worked hard on all winter long have come down. The initiative was a part of a unique safe COVID project. If you see any of the signs down, please place them at the benches area east of the SW dog park and they will return to finish up their project – which will include an online component. Thank you so much for your help as the CWF initiative takes shape for the afforestation areas east of the SW OLRA.

A large afforestation area welcome goes out to a new group who loves the forest. The dog walkers, cyclists, wedding parties, dog photographers, astronomers, nature lovers are all welcoming people, and it is great that the teenagers are learning about the afforestation areas, and enjoying the trails and man-made woodlands created on the prairies.

A fund-raiser has been started to protect the habitat of a federally listed species in the wetlands of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. April 19 2020 is the cutoff date for this fundraiser should you wish to help out.

There is a strong desire to mitigate illegal motorized trespass and the associated illegal trash dumping which is never good for the environment in an urban regional park or around a wetlands habitat. Installation of vehicle barriers would go a long way for preservation and conservation. There are currently shoreline degradation and deep ruts from motorized vehicles driving around the wetlands when the soil is wet. The fund-raiser is pro-active and preventative in regards to driving into the afforestation areas and around the wetlands with off road vehicles, all terrain vehicles, 4x4s, and motorized vehicles, and the illegal dumping of trash. An outlier case would be extreme mudding in the habitat of the Horned Grebe.

Following the ecological assessment a study can be made regarding eco-classrooms and youth to come on board to plant willows around the wetland shoreline to further protect the wetlands habitat. If willow planting was determined to be best practice, it would provide an empowering class project to protect the habitat of a federally listed species, and the willow tree growth would provide data regarding positive action taken on a climate change project.

Fresh Snow on the Boughs

This fall, the Canadian Parks Conference was held in Quebec City where developers of urban, regional and national parks met and networked together to discuss four themes:

“COLLABORATING and building relationships that ignite the powerful benefits of Nature
CONNECTING with and fostering a love for Nature through a diversity of experiences
CONSERVING and supporting the diversity of life to meet the needs of all species
LEADING by supporting professional development and performance excellence”

The honourable Minister Pierre Dufour, Minister of Parks, PQ, as the inaugural speaker, brought attention to the unifying theme, “As eloquently illustrated by the unifying theme, Parks for all and all for parks, the need to preserve nature leads us more than ever to collaborate in the interest of both current and future citizens … and of our beautiful parks, of course! ”

Throughout the conference workshops were held focusing on health benefits of different ecosystem types, biodiversity conservation, and cultivating youth leadership. How can there be parks for all, inclusive of all abilities, while at the same time providing a connection to nature in the city and branding of nature tourism. The conference engaged speakers on world views, and indigenous engagement, while exploring climate change and the benefits of the natural infrastructure. Nature deficit disorder could be alleviated by using parks as classrooms providing hands-on learning. Sustainable tourism provides a method to take pride in nature in a digital age with the recreational impacts of providing technology in parks. An entire workshop focussed on how “parks and protected areas face many challenges, including climate change, decline in biodiversity, changing visitor expectations, and nature-deficit disorder.”

The Tourism Industry Association of Canada realizes the importance of parks and greenspaces in tourism. TIAC President & CEO Charlotte Bell was a presenter at the Canadian Parks Conference. “Outdoor recreational spaces are a strong part of Canada’s identity, and a key driver for Canadian tourism. Working to promote park visitation in a sustainable way will continue to showcase our awe-inspiring landscapes, and drive local economies for many generations to come.”

What were some of the Tourism takeaways from the conference?

Would you say about 5% of the population takes part in organized sport and recreation, and 95% take a holiday to a natural greenspace? Why not make greenspace tourism a part of Saskatoon, and have pride in Saskatoon’s greenspaces – in the natural and historic heritage of the afforestation areas? Why not take a staycation, and celebrate the biodiversity and semi-wilderness habitat of the afforestation areas?
