Hunting inside the city

When we heard that there were those people who had been hunting in the afforestation areas for years, we, along with many others, thought that was something which was not allowed to happen within the city.  However, the hunters were right.  If they follow the Saskatchewan hunting regulations (no hunting within 500 meters of a building) there is a loophole in the City of Saskatoon bylaws, which does, indeed allow hunting in certain areas of the city if they first ask permission.

There are school class projects ongoing at the afforestation areas, University of Saskatchewan classes, public school and high school, citizen science bio-blitzes, and tours, besides nature and bird watchers, active living health enthusiasts – dog walkers, hikers, joggers, cyclists, skiiers, snowshoers.  All thought that the greenspace would be safe, and that hunting was not allowed inside city limits.

There is a meeting Monday March 9 at 9:00 a.m. before the Standing Policy Committee on Planning Development and Community Services to speak towards the City of Saskatoon bylaw.  The request is that a bylaw should be worded for protection in the city similar to the City of Regina No Hunting Bylaw No: 2011-14.

Send in your answer to the CTV Poll question:

Should hunting be allowed within city limits? Email your answer yes or no

You can email CTV cfqcnews@ctv.ca for your answer to show up here

https://saskatoon.ctvnews.ca/more/poll-results

If you also think that people should not be able to discharge a firearm within city limits, or shoot bow and arrows for hunting, please write a letter to your city councillor or write a letter towards this item which is already on the agenda.  This “no hunting” is an item which many people thought already existed, and it does not for many City of Saskatoon areas.  Please see page 21 for what is and what is  not allowed in regards to hunting in the City of Saskatoon within city limits.

Letters or requests to speak relating to matters that are already on the Council or Committee agenda must be received according to the guidelines on this webpage.

Very wonderfully, hunting is not allowed on property where “no hunting” signs are posted according to Saskatchewan provincial hunting legislation.  Today, no hunting signs were in fact posted by the City of Saskatoon at the afforestation areas and at the off leash dog park.

If you are in another city, please check your bylaws about hunting within city limits, and how they are worded.

“St. Barbe’s unique capacity to pass on his enthusiasm to others. . . Many foresters all over the world found their vocations as a result of hearing ‘The Man of the Trees’ speak. I certainly did, but his impact has been much wider than that. Through his global lecture tours, St. Barbe has made millions of people aware of the importance of trees and forests to our planet.” Allan Grainger

“We forget that we owe our existence to the presence of Trees. As far as forest cover goes, we have never been in such a vulnerable position as we are today. The only answer is to plant more Trees – to Plant Trees for Our Lives.” ~ Richard St. Barbe Baker
