Today is World Water Day! Forests, grasslands and water (wetlands) all play a part acting as a carbon sink, and reduce greenhouse gases. World Water Day is a United Nations observance.

Council of Canadians’ Blue Communities Project encourages us all to take action now.

The Saskatoon Afforestation areas i.e. Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, George Genereux Urban Regional Park, provide many recreational opportunities in a semi-wilderness setting such a bird watching, cycling, cross-country skiing, nature hikes, and photography. The areas offer significant wildlife habitat and a corridor for movement as they are major parts of a larger natural swale (West Swale) that connects natural habitat north of the Hwy 7 railway overpass and the CN line heading west with the Ducks Unlimited Chappell Marsh Conservation Area on the south. This in turn connects the South Saskatchewan River valley, Saskatoon’s major wildlife corridor. The areas have marshlands as well as lands re-naturalized by tree planting. The area drains into the river upstream from Saskatoon’s water intake, making removal of trash and hazardous waste such as oils and antifreeze which can leach into the soils and water table imperative.

Today World Water Day it is a day to think about the South Saskatchewan watershed! What is the South Saskatchewan watershed you say?

This above picture shows the river basin, the catchment area, or the drainage basin for the South Saskatchewan River. This is a contemporary image of the south Saskatchewan River Basin. The image which follows shows the formation of the West Swale from the Yorath Island Glacial Spillway. The hydrological surface drainage patterns shown in the topological map above are a stark difference to the glacial spillway below which shows that the waters in the Glacial North Saskatchewan combined with Glacial Rice Lake. When the waters from the retreating glacier reached a great volume, the shoreline of Glacial Rice Lake could not contain the water anymore. and there was a sudden surge of spillwaters through the Yorath Island Channel and the Moon Lake Channel cascading in an eruption across the Cory Plains until the waters were stopped in the Glacial South Saskatchewan Lake. Yorath Island was formed from the deposited till and rubble of this Pleistocene Glacial event. Today we create river drainage maps for the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers. The glacial spillway with its huge surge of water created a momentous and catastrophic joining between the two basin areas. Because of the land topography, there are remains of the Yorath Island Channel and the Moon Lake Channel seen today on Google Satellite maps, and they show evidence of the rich and lush riparian waterway which once existed, and which is still connected through underground springs and wetlands.

This was a contributing factor to the formation of the South Saskatchewan River as we know it today. As you walk in Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation area imagine the Pleistocene ice age mammals startled by the glacial spillway. Imagine this same ice age mammals creating new trails along the two new rivers in the Moon Lake Channel and the Yorath Island Spillway. Wonder as they wandered to the water’s edge for a drink of water. Where would the Palaeo-Indian fit into this scenario? Would they similarly follow the animal trails? Would they hunt the ancient ice age mammoths. Would the Palaeo-Indian find the two new rivers in the Moon Lake Channel and the Yorath Island Spillway handy to help them forage, and find food to eat? There were major encampments found where these channels met the Glacial South Saskatchewan Lake. As you walk in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, imagine living during the time of ice age mammoths.

Then, appreciate the semi-wilderness habitat we have in Saskatoon today. Along with the waterfowl, do we have other animals using the West Swale Wetlands named after B.T. Chappell as Chappell Marsh? Have you spotted a muskrat or any ducks, geese, herons, or terns? The West Swale is a geological treasure in the City of Saskatoon.

During this day, International Day of Action for Rivers, think of how you, personally can take action for the International Day of Action for Rivers! The theme for 2021 is celebrating the Rights of Rivers.

Today think of geology, and geography, and the history of ancient rivers which formed today’s rivers which we appreciated so much.

The areas have 17 acres of wetland marshes as well as 143 acres of woodlands re-naturalized by tree planting. The area drains into the river upstream from Saskatoon’s water intake, bringing to the forefront a call for environmental stewardship. The eco-system management programme monitors substances which leach into the soils and water table.

Overcoming the Climate Crisis

The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) has posted a number of environmental events happening in Canada.

Among the events is “Overcoming the Climate Crisis: What needs to be done to avoid a catastrophe.” This online event organized by Science for Peace has arranged author Professor Danny Harvey as a guest speaker. “Professor Harvey is the author of “Global Warming: the hard science”. Also, he is a lead author of reports for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change.”Source

This online event is held Tuesday January 26th, 2021 at 7:00 pm EST which is 6:00 pm CST. (The registration confirmation will say 6:30 pm EST which is 5:30 CST, awaiting clarification)

Hope to see you there! Afforestation areas are amazing carbon sinks. Planting new afforestation areas, and caring for existing afforestation areas is timely during this era of climate change.

Climate Adaptation Summit 2021

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. did register as a successful side event for the Climate Adaptation Summit 2021 which took place 25-26 January 2021. The programme explores nature based solutions, weather-wise cities, resilient cities locally led adaptation as well as supporting events, side events along with the anchoring events.

The Climate Adaptation Summit 2021 states “Our planet is getting warmer, which has a growing impact on our societies and economies. We need to adapt to a new, more extreme climate.“

The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. know how important afforestation areas are in their role as carbon sinks in this era of climate change.

Thankful Thursday

Today is #ThankfulThursday, December 3.

What is there to be thankful for this #thankfulthursday? The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc. are grateful and thankful for everyone who gave support via online nominations or by donations to these wonderful urban regional parks on #GivingTuesday!

December 4 is Wildlife Conservation Day which is something absolutely wonderful to be in gratitude for. Saskatoon is blessed to have a semi-wilderness corridor where over a dozen species at risk have been found, and the users and stakeholders in the afforestation area are committed to their protection. It is great that there is no hunting and no poaching allowed in these urban regional parks. Become familiar with TIPPS, any the SK Environment poaching and polluter fines. In an era where agricultural land, and urban expansion has left zoos and conservation areas for wildlife, it is absolutely phenomenal that the 326 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the 127.8 acre George Genereux Urban Regional Park still afford glimpses of wildlife inside the City of Saskatoon. For these we are all grateful.

It is a great time of year to be thankful for United Nations World Soil Day on December 5. Saskatoon is in a fortunate position as the afforestation areas serve as filtration system for the waters of the West Swale which percolate through the forest floor where the water undergoes an amazing filtration system designed by Mother Nature herself. So as the West Swale enters the South Saskatchewan River watershed, the afforestation areas have cleaned the water draining through the West Swale tributary into the river just upstream from the city water intake.

Climate change: what forests and forest soils do

“Carbon emissions are a major contributor to climate change. The world´s forests, in one of their many roles, act as a significant carbon store. 650 billion tonnes of carbon, or nearly one third of the total in terrestrial ecosystems, are captured in forests. Forest soils also store a quantity of carbon equalling that of the global forest biomass, about 45 percent each. An additional ten percent of carbon is found in forest dead wood and litter. In total, forests store as much carbon as the atmosphere.”

As we know from the warmer and drier years of the dirty thirties, trees and forests are needed to protect our soils! “In order to protect our soils, we need to protect our trees and forests.” Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Protecting the environment, taking action on climate change, conservation and restoration for species at risk, all while enjoying nature it doesn’t get better than this! Take part in the launch of “Our Forest Returns Saskatoon” – a campaign to kickstart the amazing wonders of winter in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and out at George Genereux Urban Regional Park. Did you know that just $100 towards the conservation of the afforestation areas is an amazing way to take action on climate change as trees are the largest and cheapest method of removing CO2 from the atmosphere mitigating climate change. Forests clean our air, our water, and regulate our climate. Forests help to manage and alleviate flooding.

Did you know that just $90 does greatly assist in the installation of interpretive signs and the creation of an afforestation area outdoor classroom for children across the City of Saskatoon.

Did you know that just $75 would go towards 125m of wildlife friendly fence can be installed. This allows the deer fawns and moose calves to pass through without getting caught in the fence, or without being left behind.

Did you know that just $60 towards the installation of a garbage receptacle would greatly protect the semi- wilderness habitat without pollution in the environment. This installation will protect the natural areas at this amazing habitat.

Did you know that just $50 towards the protection of habitat for bees and other pollinators which help keep our planet and our city green. They are facing habitat loss, and what a better place than the afforestation areas to protect their habitat where herbicides and pesticides are not in use.

Did you know that just $40 would support the installation of a park identification sign to mitigate illegal motorized vehicle trespass and illegal trash dumping.

Did you know that just sponsoring a tree with $25 a month would enable that the proper Afforestation Area protections are in place. Receive information about your tree. This is a gift that keeps on giving, and you can be a part of the effort to protect these trees in perpetuity.

Did you know that just $20 would be a benefit for providing groups of volunteers with facemasks, gloves and trash bags to conduct clean ups. Community volunteer clean ups go a long way to protect the woodlands, grasslands and wetlands.

Starting Over from great comments

We had some fantastic comments and input from our first input to the introduction of Our Forest Returns Saskatoon! We didn’t start from the beginning, that’s for sure. We started over on our YouTube video, indeed.

There is illegal trash dumping, and illegal trespass going on, so the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc is an environmental charity seeking environmental protections in the form of motorized vehicle barriers and park identification signs to alleviate problems, and preserve the environment as first steps. This concept was developed at a community meeting held at City Hall with input from a varied segment of the people who live in the area, users of the afforestation areas and many stakeholders came out. See the minutes which provided the initial direction and were recorded by Trish from the Montgomery Place community which are online!

Forests as Carbon Sinks

We must protect and restore Earth’s ecosystems. Phytoplankton, coral reefs, forests, savannas, grasslands, wetlands, peatlands, soils, mangroves, and sea grasses contribute greatly to sequestration of atmospheric CO₂. Marine and terrestrial plants, animals, and microorganisms play significant roles in carbon and nutrient cycling and storage.

Globally, forests store large amounts of carbon sequestered from the atmosphere and retained in living and dead biomass and soil. The estimated amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere is equivalent to 810 Pg C, but 500 and 1500 Pg C are stored in terrestrial biomass and soil, respectively, of which 60% is stored in forest systems
